    FYI - you don't need to put an external instrument in order to play midi, you can just open a midi track and set the appropriate midi channel :)
    Specially that External Instrument often have a lot of latency compare to a straight midi channel!

    Should go without saying (he says) but you need to get the Korg USB to MIDI driver for your synth, even for Mac. I wrongly assumed it would be plug and play.

    Depending on the daw this may vary, but try to always use hardware synth as a virtual instrument - have Midi track recorded and audio processed through your sound card. This way you will have it all on one channel, rather than having audio and midi separate. OFC you can do that too ,but it is tedious. Once you are happy with endless midi tweaking, bounce your synth in real time. This doesn't apply (at least for me) when it comes to my drum machines, as my sequencers are good enough and i dont need midi to fix the performance of the programmed patterns. so AR and Tempest go directly to their respective channels, ofc i get each sound separately so i can treat it as i want rather than a stereo image.

      Mate ! I can't thank you enough!! Finally I can create and use midi to play my synth! I can play in the midi then edit if/as needed and record the synth sounds ! What a relief !
      My next task is to work out how to synchronise the LFO rates to the tempo in logic. eg if my logic tempo is 125 then how can I make the LFO pulse at the same rate? Is this using the midi clock? I want to create pulsing base sounds in the synth and bring into logic to align with other instruments. Thanks

    Not meaning to be dense, but can anyone explain the advantages of recording the midi data first and then the audio track from the midi versus recording the synth just via audio without the midi? What I see here, and in other videos, is essentially a process of laying down an audio track, but with the addition of a midi track first. So....if the idea is to create an audio track, why not just record the audio track to begin with?
    I'm not asking this to be a prick, but as a complete midi newbie that started down this midi rabbit hole a week or so ago after only recording via the audio outputs of my synth for the past couple of years or so.
    I'm a simple home recording person that records their own music for fun, hobby, tinkering, etc. No live performing or any of that. I retired a handful of years ago and had always wanted to get into synths and purchased a Korg Kronos to cut my teeth on. I've used it to learn to create sounds, drum tracks, recording...etc. I compose my own music with my Korg running the audio outputs to my audio interface. The audio interface is then plugged into the computer via USB and my monitors connect to the output of the audio interface. When I'm ready to record I arm a track, hit record, play the piece for the track, then repeat the process for however many tracks a piece of music needs.
    If it's a complex piece then I record the tracks to the built in sequencer on the Kronos first, edit and quantize the tracks, then record the tracks into my daw. So, is it a case of a synth not having a built in sequencer, in which case you record the midi into the daw so the software can quantize and edit the midi data before laying down the audio track itself?

    Very clear instructions. However I assumed that my Werkstatt 01 could have the MIDI playback into it but it has No MIDI connection. I had connected my Arturia Keystep to the Werkstatt via VCO Exp FM and Gate In as a controller setup and the Keystep connected to my MBP Logic Pro X via MIDI and my Werkstatt to my Input 1 on the Audio Interface connected to my MBP. This is why at first I thought it would work for me but did not. What I ended up playing on my Keystep and hearing my sounds from the Werkstatt sounded good but then had nothing playing back. I then switched the Instrument on the MIDI Track I recorded to a Plug In and that worked of course. But the whole reason for the video is to use a Synth instead of Plug Ins. I will be on the lookout for Synths that have MIDI Out like the one you use. I am new at this so appreciate all the step by step details. Thanks!

    Ok, this is what i can’t understand. I am using two synths. One new, and one old. The new one is hooked up to computer directly through a usb cable, and works fine with your method. The old synth (which has a particular patch i wanna use) connects to the computer via midi in/out to usb interface I am using the little kind with the little thumb sized box mid wire. There have been two that i tried. UM ONE MK2 and Midisport USB uno. If i send the audio from the mono out of the old synth to the input of my Audio interface which is connected to my computer via thunderbolt, i can hear the patches from the old synth. (regardless of what Logic Pro track is selected) Now whether i make an instrument track, and set external instrument as the plug n, or choose external instrument as my initial track. (the former is how i have been try g most as that is what was initially explained to me) and i set the input to the same one in my audio interface that the mono out of the old synth goes i to, (just happens to be input two) and i select the external midi track to record, what i am hearing is the old synth parch coming through the audio, and what i am seeing is midi events being recorded when i play notes on the old synth. THE problem happens in play back. The midi notes are there, but there is no sound when i play it back. There is sound when i hit the keys. There are midi events going into the track, but when i playback, i hear nothing. Now if i were to take the quarter inch cable out of the mono out of the old synth and plug it into the new synth, and change the midi destination of external instrument track in logic from old synth to new synth, I would now hear the patches of the new synth (via input 2 of the audio interface which remains unchanged. Im only changing which hadware synth is going to input 2) So now i will hit record and play keys on the NEW synth, and again i am hearing the audio, and also seeing MIDI events being recorded except, unlike the old synth, when i play back the external instrument track i hear the events i jst recorded. But indon’t on the old synth.Midi cables are connected to the right ports. Mid transmit and receive are both on on the old synth. Channel 1 on logic and also on old synth. Drivers updated for midi to usb interface. I mean, it seems to me that the old synth is SENDING midi, but not receiving it. It both sends AND receives in the new synth. But the old synth, which works as a controller fine and can playback any software synths in other tracks. It sends midi to the external instrument track. But when i play back the track, there is nothing. There is with the new synth, but not with the old. Why?

    • @NoizeLondon
      @NoizeLondon  5 лет назад

      Choose input monitoring OR record enable but not together. Won’t be able to hear when playing back record enable on.

    • @sethother8012
      @sethother8012 5 лет назад

      @@NoizeLondon No, that wasn't the issue. I could hear the playback when sending midi to new synth via usb to usb, but NOT to the old synth via usb interface to Midi in/out. I already resolved this by uninstalling and reinstalling my midi interface drivers. Darn social media time lags

    this is great info! -- i'm a dinosaur and have been using hardware exclusively forever. Looking to make the jump to a DAW, but maintain the spontaneity of live instruments. I'll probably start out just by syncing from the master clock in the DAW to my instruments, record that live, and then do some post editing in the DAW. But knowing how to transfer the MIDI could come in use!

  • @soundlab7755
    @soundlab7755 4 года назад +1

    In Ableton it’s an easier and better solution to use the audio input in the external instrument device. Then you can also implement the latency control on the device. Figure out what the latency is and the set it and forget and when you commit to audio (by recording it to an audio track like you show) it will always be in time :)

    • @NoizeLondon

    What’s your workflow when you want to record several different tracks using the same external synth with different presets - ie. a bass track, a lead, a pad etc. Am I right in thinking you need to record each sound to audio before moving onto the next one, or is there a more efficient way? First of all... Great work on the videos! Huge fan of yours! Quick question regarding the cables need from the Korg to the audio interface. I see on the Minilogue XD there is a L/Mono & R output... Do I need a dual cable from the Korg into a single into the audio interface (Scarlett 2i2) or a single to single will be fine, as long as I plug it in the R output? Thanks again for your help!

    • @NoizeLondon
      @NoizeLondon  4 года назад +1

      Thanks JP! Just did a little reading and it seems as though the output is stereo, which means that you want two of the same cable going into two inputs of your respective audio interface. Balance the input gain, and if you can record in stereo then do it :) Hope that's useful

    Ok so help me out here. I use logic and I just picked up a Korg minilogue XS the other day. With my experience in logic I thought this would be easy but it’s obviously not ha ha. I was trying to bypass using midi thinking that I could connect directly into my apogee duet 2 by means of a 1/4” audio out with a splitter connecting into the 1/4” inputs (1 & 2). I was able to open an audio file in logic, use surround, and the tracks were recording and playing back recorded material as you would expect. Even the recorded waveforms looked normal. However, that was not the case when trying to bounce and share the project. It’s become a nightmare. I must be doing something wrong.

I can however hear the sounds from my synth playing in Logic and I can record them on an audio track but im getting some unpleasant noise when I do that.

    Did all that and my synth sounds crackly when recording and on playback. Kind of making the whole thing useless for recording. Spent 4 hours yesterday trying to get rid of the crackle. Got a Roland JD Xi, and plugged it in with the USB it comes with and installed the audio drivers. Then tried it through the interface with jack cables, still crackle when recording. Sounds fine when just monitoring before recording. So I don't know what's going on. Would be pulling my hair out if I weren't bald.

    Thanks for the tutorial. Easy to follow and I've successfully set up my first midi track in Logic, let's call this Audio1 and Inst 1.
    However, if I now set up a 2nd midi track, let's call this Audio 2 and Inst 2 I have an issue where the 1st midi track data (Inst 1) is being played instead of the 2nd (Inst 2). I have tried assigning midi track 1 to channel 1 and midi track 2 to channel 2 but the has not worked. FYI at this point I have not recorded any audio on tracks Audio 1 or 2. Any ideas?

    Does anyone know how to write or copy a melody you have previously used with a vet in a trac for example then re write/record it with the synth and be able to record the automation as well? I can get the midi notes playing through the synth but then I can't figure out how to record the cut off for example, I can only seem to record automation while playing the synth live and doing it as per this video, any help appreciated, Thanks

    I can record and play a midi file via Korg Monologue in Logic. But when I create an audio channel, it will not record a sound no matter what. Any thoughts?
    Ps: I could not install a driver because the driver is not working on M1.

    this is so frustrating. I click on external instruments in ableton an all I get is "Drum rack, impulse, instrument rack, simpler". That’s not where you automate from a synth. Try doing it on the piano roll section and find out which number CC (control change) your moog provides

      find out which CC is controlling which parameter (control change). Automate live, then use the automation option in the midi window to change.
