- In this video you will learn a valuable composition technique, focus and recompose. This technique allows you to place your subject anywhere you want in the frame and still have it be in focus. Good explanation! This technique works even better when using back button focus as it allows you to not worry about holding the shutter button down and also lets you take multiple shots without focusing/recomposing each time.
*Warning* This technique may work for lenses with apertures smaller than f4 at certain working distances, however it can also make your images out of focus. Especially if you have a lens with a fast aperture like f2.8 or faster, when you focus then recompose the focus plane has shifted. This is especially problematic when working at short distances when the depth of filed is greater like in most portraiture. With large aperture lenses like a 50mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4 the focus plane is extremely narrow and recomposing will definitely throw your subjects eye out of focus. So use caution when using this technique!!!
Thank you so much for your video! Your explanation was easily understood and very helpful!
thank you mam u made my doubts clear...I always faced problem in focus and recompose but u cleared the wrist work now I m clear on this technique....
your video helped me a lot...
thank u so much

Great video! Thank you very much for this!
Well explained, and made a lot of sense.
Finally figured it out...nicely done....thanks
*Do not listen to this!* Once you recompose the focus plane has changed, I literally can't believe people do not realize this FACT!!! ESPECIALLY WITH FAST GLASS, THE FOCUS PLANE CHANGES WHEN YOU RECOMPOSE!!!
Nice video Vail! Thanks for sharing

Hi. thank you so much. very helpful video. i have a problem. i am using same technique as you taught in your video. problem is when i focused and recomposed the exposure meter start move. and picture become either under expose or over expose. i checked double checked the settings. i have canon 750d. using 50mm 1.8. setting single point. single shot autofocus, portrait and using Manual mode. plz help me what am i doing wrong? suppose to be focus locked once half pressed shutter and recompose. but in my case when recomposing the exposure meter start changing. plz help tnx
So are you holding the shutter half way before you recompose to take picture?
i realized i did the wrong way when i moved the camera focal point too much 5:05. thank you for this simple but effective video
what are your thoughts about back button focus recompose technique?
Javy Martin I personally am not a fan of it. Some people love it. I feel like using the back button focus button introduces more slight camera movement for me. And in focus and recompose we try to eliminate as much extraneous movement as possible. But if you feel solid with it, I say give it a try!
love you
What about metering? Shouldn't central single-point focusing goes with central spot metering? I really wish to know. Thank you?
Chak Wong some cameras have the ability to tie metering to where the focus point is. Others are limited to the center. What metering mode you choose depends on your subject. The default is evaluative/matrix metering which tries to take into account the background as well as subject. If you are shooting a backlit subject and you want your subject “properly exposed” and not in silhouette you can switch to center or spot metering, or you can do exposure compensation. Both you would want to turn off after you are done with the unusual situation. Spot and central metering can be a problem when your subject is either on the darker side or lighter side. You would need to use exposure compensation as well to tell your camera what exposure it actually needs.
Very good explanation! I have my suspicions about the single-point focus+spot metering method. But I've never crystallized its drawbacks as clearly as you do. Silhouette photography is an excellent example. Thank you, Vail Fucci!
Spot Metering is my default shooting mode. In my Nikon D600, I've found a way to switch metering modes quickly. I assign Matrix Metering to the Function Button. As long as I hold down the Button with my middle finger, the metering mode is Matrix. When I lift the finger, the metering mode snaps back to Spot.
Nicely explained

Doesn't the rule of thirds apply to video?
If we r using back button focus ,then we should keep the back button pressed while recomposing and also click the shutter with keeping the back button pressed??
Suvam Choudhury I personally don’t use back button focus but if you are then it depends on the focus mode you have your camera in. In theory if you are using back button focus you should first focus on your subject and then release the button and recompose. If you are in AF-S/one shot mode it won’t matter if you keep holding it down. Once it locks focus it will stay there. But if you have it on AF-C/AI servo mode if you keep holding down the back button while you are recomposing your shot the camera will keep tracking what is in front of it. If something else comes into frame in front of the plane of focus of your subject while decomposing the camera may change its focus. So if you are using back button focus in AF-C/AISERVO mode as most people do, even if their subject is stationary, you would not want to keep holding down the back button focus button while you are recomposing your shot. For those if you using the default focus method of pressing down half way, focus and recompose only works in AF-S/one shot mode. In AF-C mode you must rely on moving your focus point instead. Hope that was clear.
Vail Fucci so one click in AF-S and keep pressing in AF-C till the shutter click....got it
Suvam Choudhury if in af-c if you hold down until shutter clicks it will track motion of subject. Depending on your camera model you can change the parameters for how it tracks an object. But to do focus and recompose in af-c you would need to focus and then take finger off the button and then recompose and then click shutter down.
Vail Fucci is continuous shot / burst shots possible in AF-C ??
When I move my camera it changes focus to the background
Exige Nene make sure you have your camera in single shot (canon) or AF-S (pretty much all other camera makes) it will not work doing it on ai servo/AF-C mode. Once that is taken care of turn the beep feature back on. If you are doing it properly you should only hear one beep. If you hear two beeps you aren’t keeping your finger down half way between the focus and recompose part. Once you have it mastered go ahead and turn the focus confirmation beep back off.
help pls , everytime I "lock" and recompose....I aim at someones eye , lock it , move the cam a bit to an empty place close to the face and the camera starts focusing on that space.....loosing my main focus....the focus doesn't lock at all...
What to do :(
Leo, make sure you are in one shot mode/afs and not continuous focus mode of aiservo/afc. It will not work in those modes. Turn on the focus confirmation beep to help you hear if you are releasing the shutter. You want to hear only one focus beep.
thans a lot , problem fixed ;)
Focus and recompose is a common technique but especially in portaits or candids with shallow depth of field can lead to eyes that are not in focus. Check out this thread about why you may want to avoid focus and recompose. www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1553129/0?nc=1#14529189
adamfilip you have a very valid point. I personally when using my 5dmkiii move my focus point to the closest spot and recompose when necessary. But not everyone has a camera with that many cross type focus points and are not adept at switching focus points on the fly. Most people starting out have the variable maximum aperture kit lenses that only go down to 3.5 at 18mm. So the super shallow depth of field isn’t an issue. Lastly, much of the problem occurs because people are moving too much of their body or arms. If you isolate the movement exclusively to your wrists your chance of moving out of the focal plane is lessened. But to be certain if you are having focus problems when shooting at F2.8 or lower while doing close up portraits, try moving the focus points instead to see if the problem is remedied.
❤❤❤❤
when i focus and recompose the iso changes everytime -_-
What is the make and model of your dslr? Is it possible you decoupled the exposure settings from the shutter button? Make sure you are in single shot/af-s mode when doing focus and recompose.
canon 70D
I would suggest trying to restore the camera to factory settings. Have the beep turned on while practicing this technique. Make sure you only hear one beep. If you hear a second when you take the shot it is taking a second exposure reading. If this doesn't fix it, call canon.
Leo Loyola take it off auto iso
Is this a stupid question, can’t you just move the focus point in the camera ?
You can but there are times when it is best to do that and other times when focus and recompose is your best option. The center focus point on cameras tends to be the “best” one. It is a cross type one. On more expensive cameras many more focus points are cross type ones. Focus and recompose tends to be a much faster technique than moving your focus point. Lastly even when you change your focus point to the side, you still may need to use focus and recompose to get your composition EXACTLY the way you want it.
