    One of the more enjoyable things about building my studio was trying to repurpose items from Home Depot to solve whatever issue I had. Numerous times an employee asked “can I help you find something sir?” My response was often “I can’t tell you what I’m looking for but I’ll know it when I see it.”

    FYI: I did this to my old spot on the windows & those blankets deteriorate over time.
    The backing ends up turning all dusty & blue & will drop particles everywhere.
    If you can, cover the exposed side asap.
    Sun damage really destroys the original covering.

    FUN FACT: 4 layers of towels actually deaden sound more than traditional acoustic paneling (and moving blankets.) I attached several layers of towels to my curtains with giant safety pins. Make sure you have strong curtain rods for the extra weight...Easy budget friendly solution!

    I'm totally in the same situation now! But my plan is to get speaker / lighting stands and a pole to sit on top, so I have a non-permanent set up. I can then move it, or even use it as a room divider, amongst other things.

  • @johanarens9798
    @johanarens9798 4 года назад +2

    Hey Colt, bang on, I have to deal with the same situation but at at larger scale, the window to treat is 20'x8'. That being said, I have done some measurements with a calibrated mic (Dayton audio), measurement software (REW, free). The blankets starts to make a difference around 180 hz, the difference is higher as we are moving higher in frequencies. At 1Khz and higher, each layer of blanket gives a 5 db reduction. I have tested with 2 layers. Nothing fancy, usual moving blankets from the hardware store. If you guys wants to see this, I can share screen captures of the measurements.

    Check this out: I also bought myself a $100 Gazebo / Pergola (200cm x 200cm) and placed it in my basement on a noise absorbing rug. I left the outside "walls" off and placed moving blankets on all five sides. Got myself a 10M led strip for the inside and some bass traps in the corners and foam on the inside off the blankets. Super easy set-up for recording with my D18 and singing at the same time straight into my iPhone using the Roland Go Pro mix. Call me cheap but I just love my little "tent" inside my basement. Nice and cozy. Love your channel man!.....

    cool man. couple of suggestions for anyone doing this themselves: Don't make the curtain the exact size of the window. make it notably bigger. there's nothing wrong with it being close and wavy. that way you have excess to cover those gaps in the sides. 2, if you can; don't put the rod inside the window well. that makes it hard to get rid of light coming in around the edges. instead, mount the rod above the window, and going past the outer edges of the window well. that way no light creeps in from the sides. making two panels instead of one is also going to work a bit better for functionality. of course, Colt would've had to get a special masonry drill bit to drill into that brick work, and special anchors to put in there. so it would've been a slightly more expensive and technical job had he done these things.
    That's really cool that you could hear the difference immediately though! very cool. I was curious what sound material you were going to put in there.
    As someone that just started basic filming in my studio space that has two full size windows, i totally understand why it's more important for video than audio! luckily i already had some home made curtains. Just trying to get the level of lighting coming in the windows to stay the same on my cheap camera's was completely a wash. looked like someone was standing outside my window strobing a helicopter searchlight!
    love your videos man.

    Removable inside rod: shower curtain rod. :) They generally stay by pressure pushing out on the walls and don't need much (or any) mounting hardware. Might want some if the curtains are super heavy, but shower curtain rods can hold a surprising amount of weight.

    You could double up, ask your mother in law to sew another blanket & then use curtain tie hooks on each side, so you can have balance. by opening the bottom of the blanket curtain and let light in, but also be able to unhook them from the side & block most of the light out as well.
    Cool idea about the packing blanket sewed into the fabric!

    That is exactly what I did for my Bass Traps in my studio. who wants to spend 100's of dollars for bass traps and sound panels. I took 4 heavy duty moving blankets layered them, making sure that there was thin air pockets between the layers sewed theme together then sewed them to the backing of the bass traps then covered them with a thick micro swede material. The room sounds great and I saved a boatload of money. ***Note*** The material you use must have air flow through it. No leather or vinyl products, all you have done then is built another reflective surface.

    I got one for ya. I took a peice of drywall and cut it a few cm smaller then size of the inner window. wrapped it like a present with a moving blanket and stapled it to drywall. Then took a nicer looking simi plush throw blackent and stretched and stapled it to drywall. then simple put it in window. done, cheap,remoable and effective. On my latest studio I had a window with plantation shutter. same proccess just within the plantation shutter frame, except now i can angle large plantation flaps like diffuser.

    what about sewing pockets of sand or some other dense material into it?
    I don't do any audio recording, but the street noise through my bedroom window is bonkers sometimes. I have industrial sewing machines and lots of heavy duty fabric. I think if I used quilted blankets on the outer layers and had an inner layer with 2"-3" square, sand filled pockets it should kill a lot of the noise, I just don't know how much. Either, it would definitely work as a thermal insulator in winter.

    This may sound like a dumb question, for which I apologise in advance -
    but why not just fix a curtain rod above the window and hang curtains from it, that you can draw, like you would in any other room?

    • @ColtCapperrune
      @ColtCapperrune  4 года назад +1

      A couple reasons honestly. First, there isn’t a flat even surface to mount a traditional curtain rod to because of all the stonework. Secondly, since I am always filming, and always posting photos, etc. I didn’t want curtains to stay up all the time. I wanted something that I could remove and have very little of the curtain system remaining visually. Also, in order for a curtain to have any legitimate acoustic properties it needs to be fairly thick, so it’s not going to slide across the curtain rod very easy like you would open a traditional set of curtains. Hope that helps!
