    This was wrong in so many ways most especially to paddle out without any means to keep you warm. As the advise goes "dress for immersion"....With sea temperatures of around 15 degrees if you had come out of the kayak so far from land the water temperature would have VERY quickly incapacitated you and made you hypothermic and even if you had got back into the kayak you had no means to warm up again. This would have meant that you would have to rely on the other two to get you back to shore.
    In addition your friend had a cranked paddle but was not holding it in the right place and the tow line was attached to the front and back of the kayaks which meant that neither of you could reach to unclip in the event of an emergency.
    All in all not a great way to encourage others to risk doing something similar.
    Also, it's a sea (North Sea) not an ocean and it's only 8 miles offshore not 20.
    If you are thinking of kayaking offshore in the sea or ocean or in anything other than benign conditions please get proper instruction and training first.

    Doing a 20 mile kayak on the first time trying it is insane. It took me a month of kayaking once every three days to work up to 12 miles lol

    I did the same thing with a friend but it was the North Hoyle wind farm off Prestatyn, about 18 years ago. We set off in thick fog, straight after a massive thunderstorm. We both had expedition kayaks with compasses and GPS as well as marine radio's (we both had marine radio licence's). The sea was absolutely dead-flat and the fog cleared just as we approached the farm.

    When I was in the Boy Scouts as a kid we did long distance paddling with canoes and the whole trip to the island was into the wind and we were all spent so for the return trip with the wind one of us suggested lashing a bunch of canoes together and we had a tarp that was tied off to the cross beams of the outside canoes and we tied ropes to the top corners to make a sail and we were flying back across the lake. A couple scouts used their paddles as rudders to keep us on track. It worked brilliantly, the scoutmaster was pretty impressed too.
    Where are your tarps boys? It looked like a perfect onshore wind and you would be ripping in a kayak

I spent 5 weeks evacuated from my community this summer because of unprecedented wildfires in northern Canada. We are really seeing the impact of climate change in the far north. Over 4 million hectares burned this summer in the NWT in Canada.

    I know Europe has come a LONG way ahead of America in terms of energy conservation. I wish we carried reusable bags etc. even just switching back to a really good cardboard bag in grocery’s would help. At least it wouldn’t take 500 million years to decompose like plastic would. All the stores would have to do it though. It’s a global effort that needs to happen and it’s sad because a lot of people when you talk about this stuff blow you off and call you a “tree hugger” or worse!
    Thank you Louis, for shining a light on a very important issue. Saving our planet should be of upmost importance to everyone! 🌍🌏🌎

However, I would welcome any thoughts on the amount of flying travelling RUclipsrs do i.e. Kara and Nate, yourselves, many others, when it comes to personal responsibility and the role modelling you are demonstrating to so many viewers. How do you reconcile this Louis? Must be a tough.

      The flights they purchase are gonna fly regardless of if they're on them or not. But the work they do sharing the beautiful world we live in is important and I would say in some ways decreases consumer travel since people can get such detailed experiences now online.

      The thing is that there isn't an alternative at the moment for flights (can't drive or get a train across the atlantic) so I always think that arguement is flawed. Of course if you fly private that's a different discussion.

    As others have said, please don’t try this at home. I’ve lived on the South Coast for 10 years and the sea, wind and tides are unpredictable. Without the right knowledge and support, you could find yourself in dangerous situations. Although this looks fun, I wouldn’t recommend. I’ve kayaked on this coast but wouldn’t venture 10 miles of the coast!

    Why we don’t harness the power and consistency of tidal power baffles me.

    • @marsrover001
      @marsrover001 Год назад +4

      Cause anything that touches the water eventually breaks. Offshore wind gets a pass by having all the electrical and moving parts out of the water.
      On shore wind is cheaper, but awful people complain about it being "ugly". I think it's cool, slap em in every farm I say.

    • @ClimateAdam

      tidal power is definitely being worked on and implemented more and more. it's still technically challenging and so it's expensive as a result. I'm hoping that over the coming years the cost will come down hugely - for countries like the UK it could make a massive difference!

    Those are NOT ocean kayaks, which are airtight (don't sink) and you sit on top of instead of inside. Please don't try this at home

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku Год назад +17

      You are confusing a brand (OCean kayak) with where you can use a kayak. What you are referring to is a sit on top kayak which is a recreational kayak. They are using touring kayaks (albeit) short ones which has a hull shaped designed for open water. A sit on top kayak has a hull designed for stability and are frequently used for fishing. But I do agree, 20 miles off shore offers a lot of risk, and shouldn’t be undertaken lightly.
