"The man who stood up..."
One of the best movies ever, for me the best character study ever put on a film. Scorsese's genius shines in Taxi Driver - if you have not seen the movie you probably should.

bro you are not supposed to sympathise with him or feel bad for him
I think as tragic as Travis' life may be, one cannot overlook that Travis is his own worst enemy. He is attached to his own sources of misery; a love/hate relationship. Travis is a prime example of cynicism to the extreme, and it's largely his own doing.
Travis actively seeks out the things which he is disgusted by/despises. His addiction to pornography for example; you will note as he watches the flick, he uncomfortably sinks into the cinema seat (possibly to get away); he covers his eyes with his hand (disgusted) but his eyes peer through the space in his fingers.
When Travis joins the huddle of taxi drivers in the café, he doesn't openly engage with them. He distances himself and seeks out something which he dislikes. When the other drivers attempt to initiate him in the conversation, he changes the entire theme to something dark and negative, consequently killing the atmosphere stone dead. Yet Travis lacks the self-awareness to understand it is _he_ who is creating the awkwardness. Rather he maintains the other drivers are detached and distant to him.
The same could be said for the woman he takes out on a date. He immediately begins to analyse her life and assumes she is unhappy and unfulfilled; ultimately projecting himself onto her, thus seeing his own flaws but in another person. He shows his lack of interest in virtually everything yet he feels important enough to receive interest. He takes the woman to the same porn theater and when she leaves, visibly disgusted, his complete lack of any self-awareness surfaces. Unable to take a hint that the woman isn't interested in him, he feels majorly hard done to. He regards her, then, as being like all the rest. She falls prey to his brutal and merciless cynicism.
Travis is able to accurately identify and seek out the flaws within society and its individuals, all the while remaining oblivious to the same flaws germinating within him. He takes to self-isolating. Resentment boils within him. He then deludes himself into believing he is morally and intellectually superior.
When he seeks advice from a fellow cab driver, he is advised to take a break; relax; stop thinking so much. Travis disregards this advice with a smirk insinuating it's not good enough. When asked what he expects, Travis can't deliver an answer. Travis is tragic in that he is tormented but he doesn't want to turn his back on what is tormenting him, although he wishes it would cease.
Travis is, as Betsy said, a "walking contradiction".
real
Great, detailed character study.
This is only works if you come from the NPC prospective that the world is perfectly fine and there is no social decay or degeneracy. You place too much blame on Travis. Taxi Driver is about the relationship between a sick and filthy world and a man that wants to make a change. You act like Travis has all the problems yet he's the one that saved a under age girl from prostitution and wiped out a brothel....

For those who love this film, I highly recommend 'You Were Never Really Here'. Joaquin Phoenix is sublime.
Love that movie but it made me depressed the whole rest of the day lol
I think it's a pretty well done movie by a great director, but for some reason I just didn't click with it (at least this first time I watched it). What did you enjoy about it?
And how would you say it compares to Taxi Driver (for me it doesn't come close)?
@@JoaoPedro-jc5fm I'm not saying it's as good as Taxi Driver by any means mate, I just made the comparison because the narratives are very similar, and they are both spearheaded by arguably the greatest working actors at the time of their release.
@@LOSTEpisodesForFree True that, great comparison actually. Sorry for misunderstanding you. But I'm still curious to know your opinion. What did you enjoy about it?
@@JoaoPedro-jc5fm No worries at all mate! I was a huge fan of (obviously) the performances and Lynne Ramsay's direction, but I also thought the almost frustratingly slow pace acted as its strong point, as did the incredible, classic film-noir-esque cinematography. I'm not trying to say it's a film that's going to change your life (like I'm sure Taxi Driver has to many an audience member), I just thought it was a great hour and a half of gritty, relentless drama that gets better every time you watch it. Sorry for the essay! Haha

I don't know how you came up with an idea to put 'No surprises' to this video but this was a magnificient decison. It really fits here. Especially the verse ' a job that slowly kills you' is so relatable here. Bravo!
He was a mess, yet he could visibly see the world's corruption. How topical. A gem from mr. Scorsese.
This is honestly my favourite video on all of RUclips.
Travis in the film as a character actually showed a limited education level, we can see that through dialogues, his manner and knowledge storage.
My grandfather gave me his old M-65 field jacket and I almost immediately found myself talking to myself in the mirror
The background music is so surreal with the context & visuals 💓

Anyone can find something common between him and Holden coldfield from The catch in the rye ? i can see both has sick and tired of filthy and phony world but they believe there exists something precious and beautiful this world
Yes! They share a lot of similarities. Both of them are stuck in places they don't like, they are also very narcissistic and despise people in general, although I'd say Holden's situation wasn't nearly as bad as Travis' and definitely Holden seemed a bit more social and sane.
Taxi driver and no surprises is perfect combination
Joker Movie will be the Taxi Driver of this decade.
I dont think it'll ever come near this
*HOLD UP*
If you watch the trailers on RUclips for taxi driver or even video clips and then watch The Joker trailers you do see a lot of similarities even the physical looks of the main characters body languages and excetera are the same
@@richardjackson9584 You know the director of Taxi Driver is producing Joker right?
Todd Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Scott Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the works of Martin Scorsese (who was initially attached to the project as a producer); the graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) served as the basis for the film's premise, but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration.
