  • Cité du Havre" in Montreal refers to an urban development area located southwest of downtown Montreal, along the St. Lawrence River. It is a significant part of Montreal's urban planning and architecture, characterized by its modernist design and integration of public spaces.
Habitat 67 is a distinctive housing complex located in Montreal, Canada. It was designed by architect Moshe Safdie as part of his thesis project for the McGill University School of Architecture. Completed in 1967 as a pavilion for Expo 67, it has since become an iconic architectural landmark in Montreal.
The design of Habitat 67 is notable for its innovative approach to urban housing. Safdie aimed to integrate the benefits of suburban homes, such as gardens and privacy, into a high-density urban environment. The complex consists of 354 identical prefabricated concrete units arranged in various combinations and stacked in a seemingly random manner, creating terraces, gardens, and pathways between the units.
Each unit features its own roof garden, providing private outdoor space, while the complex includes shared amenities such as elevators and pedestrian streets. Habitat 67 was envisioned as a prototype for affordable urban housing that could offer residents both the benefits of high-rise living and the qualities of a suburban home.
Over the years, Habitat 67 has become a symbol of Montreal's architectural heritage and a popular tourist attraction. It continues to be a functional residential complex, with some units used as private residences and others rented out. The design and concept of Habitat 67 have influenced subsequent architectural thinking on urban housing and high-density living.
Tropiques Nord is a condominium complex located in the Cité du Havre in Montreal, completed in 1989.
Designed by the architectural firm Tolchinsky and Goodz, Tropiques Nord is the idea of Jean de Brabant, a Montreal developer who participated in the transformation of a former Dupuis Frères department store into an office building by introducing two landscaped atriums. De Brabant discovered that tenants preferred offices overlooking garden courtyards and decided to incorporate atriums into an apartment building. It features a Hawaiian garden designed by Herbert Ramsaier, former chief landscape architect for Walt Disney Imagineering.
