For coloring light, try switching the canvas to black and white (different programs have different ways of doing this) and checking your values. If you feel like something looks a little off, it might be that your values are too close together- sometimes a hue can look much darker than it is. General rule of thumb is to add contrast where you want your viewer to be looking and try to use the whole range of values in a piece. This always helped a lot with my compositions once I figured out how to do it digitally (I can't eyeball value yet, on paper id just take a picture with my phone and grayscale it lol)
