Wow... this is like watching a timeline of my career! I started as a master control operator 1982, about the time we changed over to "Eyewitness News". The first open in this batch that I would have run is the 1983-vintage EWN starting around 0:35 (that's the year we got the Eyewitness Live Unit). Things are so different today... but Rod Wood is still here!
Wow, cool! My cousin, Tammy Palmer, now at Spectrum News, worked there as well.
Fun facts: Julie Abbott is the niece of one of my dad’s friends - she still lives in Central NY. Heather Hegedus later went to WFSB here in CT and is now at WFXT in Boston. Jennifer Lewkey is now at WRGB in Albany. And Rod Wood, Christie Casciano, Dave Eichorn, Dave Longley, Carrie Lazarus, Jim Teske and Steve Infanti are still at WSYR.
What about don alhart
He may have worked at WOKR/WHAM, but he did VO’s for other NY stations including this one. Some news anchors/talent were also voiceover artists, like Bob Vernon, Paul Anthony and Drew Dimmel.
Thanks
jesse duran that’s right, WIXT 9 in Syracuse was known as “Central New York 9”. As for Hosea Sanders, he is now an anchor at fellow ABC affiliate WLS-TV in Chicago.
Rochester, NY now has a news open compilation, that city was ultimately done by NESTLEH.
Christopher Fancher And Kyndle Hewett.
i remember when they moved over to high definition. the “high definition” intro was the best
At 0:04, the music, I think, sounds like the music used by WEWS in Cleveland, OH, when they first started calling their newscasts "Eyewitness News" in 1972.
WSYR-TV's studios are located on Bridge Street in East Syracuse.
"From the North Country to the Southern Tier, Across the Finger Lakes to the Mohawk Valley".
The male voiceover for the later versions of the news openings are done by Don Alhart of 13WHAM ABC in Rochester NY. He is retiring in June of 2024 after 50 years in television.
WSYR isn't the same without Gari's "NewsStation" theme and Max McGill as voiceover.
Had to say it: SCREW NEXSTAR, Or NEXTHOT!
Mørty The Yeemø Have to say it, but this is the chain of events that should’ve occurred in Nashville television:
1987: WNAB signs on
1988: Multimedia sells WZTV to Bert Ellis of Atlanta.
1989: Knight-Ridder sells WKRN to Greenville, South Carolina-based Cosmos Broadcasting/Liberty Corporation.
1990: Bert Ellis signs for Fox affiliation on WZTV, taking it from WCAY, then-owned by Jefferson-Pilot.
1993: WCAY enters into LMA with WKRN-TV.
1995: WSMV is sold to the Meredith Corporation; WNAB enters into LMA with Ellis
1996: WZTV, and the LMA with WNAB become part of Raycom Media
2003: Liberty acquires WCAY/WUXP outright.
2006: Liberty merges with Raycom Media. Both groups already owned two stations each, and WZTV/WNAB are sold to Diversified Communications
Also 2006: Journal acquires WNAB outright, forming a duopoly with WTVF, and enters into a JSA/SSA with WZTV
2011: Because of flood damage in 2010, Diversified sells WZTV to Raycom sidecar American Spirit Media, and reacquires WNAB from Journal pre-sale, as it is a part of the sale.
Also 2011: A new state-of-the-art facility is under construction in Forest Hills. The two Americans Spirit-owned stations establish satellite studios from a secondary set. WKRN begins newscasts for the three stations as well as its Bounce TV subchannel.
2012: The new state of the art facility is complete with a dual Doppler Radar, a weather rebrand to “First Alert Weather”, as well as increasing the flexibility of anchors to move from one part of the set to another. A large set that houses the anchors for each station is up and running. Two sports sets are built together for flexibility.
2013: The studio undergoes work again, to allow newsroom access from the set, a flaw on its design.
2015: Journal and Scripps merge, bringing WTVF under the Scripps umbrella, but without the other two sidecar stations.
2019: Raycom becomes a part of Gray. The four stations become sister stations to the Knoxville duopoly of CBS affiliate WVLT and CW affiliate WBXX.
@@rileysmith9843 If only that ever happened, the Nashville TV landscape would be different right now!
Mørty The Yeemø There is, however, a catch to the WTVF-WZTV sharing:
Certain WZTV newscasts would be replaced with a simulcast of the same newscast from WTVF.
WZTV would be using graphics styled like the Fox O&O stations.
@@blatheringblathers347 *NEXSTAR SUCKS!!*

Solon Gray from WCIX
Jim Rose from WLS
Peggy Finnegan from WPXI
I remember when the station carried Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! until 1999, where those two Merv Griffin game shows moved to WTVH on September 6th.
In 2013, the station replaced a voiceover from 2005 - 2013 to Brian Lee. The old voiceover, I don’t know

The 9 in a previous logo looks like the current KWTV logo.
You're right... that's pretty funny. Then-WIXT's NewsChannel 9 logo was designed by Dennis Calkins, who was our original staff artist dating back to when we first went on the air in 1962... and it was our first true full-color electronic graphic. The font, Eras Bold ITC, was one of a limited handful we had for our original Telemation character generator: it could only hold eight fonts at one time, and to change one, you had to load it from perforated paper tape. So many of our graphics were built around that font that we continued to use it even when we got the early Chyron Scribe that would have been used for the first NewsChannel 9 logo.
Do you have any syracuse news intros with stereo audio, from the 80s?
