The Starrcade referee angle worked well for Bret (not so much for Stinger due to the Hogan/Patrick politics) because he was limited in what he could do and the company elevated him right into the main event scene, serving a sequel to Montreal while providing a powerful climax to an 18 month saga, then a month later his first match on a payperview he beat Ric Flair. Sadly from there until the chestplate promo he was undoubtedly screwed, then with understandable reasons he needed time off after the loss of his brother at the height of an intense angle with Goldberg, when he did come back into the World title scene that damn head injury Goldberg caused sadly cut his career short. Bret did what he could in his last year post-January without anymore matches or taking any bumps, it's a shame his run there had to end as abysmally as the initial year and a half.
