I miss WCW so much. The Monday Night Wars era was such a wonderful time to be a wrestling fan. I miss switching back and forth between WCW Nitro and WWF Monday night Raw. I used to record them both on VHS at the same time. Miss my childhood.
I remember the Black Scorpion vividly, as an 11/12 year old kid and I was really interested in that storyline... I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed that it was just Ric Flair yet again, but all those vignettes and run ins and stuff really had me interested in who it was to be... and same goes for spin the wheel make the deal, especially because that little skit of Sting visiting Jake Roberts in that seedy bar or whatever it was, and they were all chanting SPIN THE WHEEL MAKE THE DEAL, it’s so awesome, so bad but so good, that it still holds up now in terms of “good wrestlecrap” lol... go look it up, should be here on YT, def an enjoyable cheesy little vignette
Two words: Lethal Lottery. Partners against each other, rivals on the saw team all for a shot at the world title. WCW had something great. And yeah they may have done 2 or 3 but overall they didn't keep it. Imagine 1 in WCW 1997. Height of the nWo. Nash and Sting vs Goldberg and Hall. Savage and Piper vs Flair and The Giant. They could have used it to keep pushing the Sting vs Hogan/WCW vs nWo narrative.
I had such high hopes for the WCW relaunch. The first couple weeks were intriguing, but it soon was apparent that the new coat of paint on the company was fading and the rust was showing through again.
Raven was so underrated plus with his name raven the man has a degree in literature hes a genius and with wrestling thrown in hes amazing never given a chance after ECW
Black Scorpion originally was going to be Al Perez, but he didn't want to job. Angel of Death Dave Sheldon was another candidate, but that went south too.
I always thought the idea of Raven and Sandman growing up together in upper middle class was entertaining because of their in ring characters. The only thing missing was having Tommy Dreamer along with them.
2001 WCW is my favorite year to return to on the WWE Network; it’s so convoluted and insane while also being chocked full of potential and entertaining bits. It has so much hope and yet so little focus.
I was actually watching old stuff on the WWE Network recently and ended up watching one of those Lethal Lottery things...I was literally thinking, damn WWE should do this!
The crow sting it was great going strong then they put him in the wolf pack. He should have stayed the solo vigilante never knowing what he's going to do or what the motivations behind his actions are.
I'm not sure if it was an original WCW idea, but the large faction idea is a good one to me. I remember the Dungeon of Doom back in the day. I may be wrong, but I believe that's who The Giant debuted with. nWo was also a large faction, both white and black and red and black. Dark Order is getting there, but they're still building their names. Granted, you probably can't have several of these as it would commit the majority of any roster, but I think it's something that should at least be visited again.
I don’t get why people thought Ric Flair was gonna hatch out of that egg at Survivor Series back in 1990. If Ric Flair was gonna come out of anything, I figured it would be a limousine.
Na they didn’t. They must have sparred with each other back I the day. The closest they came to having a match was War Games ‘98. But they didn’t even cross paths.
When I was a kid in the 80's Mid South Wrestling had a Coal Miner's Glove Match. I guess someone was running around smacking people with it so they put it on a pole and made it legal if you could get it.
Not so much on topic, but the number one thing I missed about WCW is DDP. He was a tent pole of the roster when I was a kid, and he never got close to that greatness when he went to WWE.
Seven. The vignettes got fans talking about just who this guy is (I mean personality-wise; everyone knew it was Dustin Rhodes) and what he would do. The character never made it to the ring IIRC. Best Match Bonus. During Kip Frye's (sadly) short tenure as head booker, he had a policy that made the wrestlers and, by proxy, the fans happy: using money as a reward. In this case, Frye had a policy of giving a bonus to the participants of the best match on a card. The end result was EVERYONE busting theirs asses (sometimes literally) to get that bonus. The workrate was through the roof and the matches were awesome. Of course, Frye resigned after a couple months and Bill Watts came in and shut down all the fun.
I remember digging out my old copies of PWI for an article that talked about Sting & Ultimate Warrior starting out training with a group called Powerteam USA. It had four members. I remember thinking maybe one of the other two was going to be the Black Scorpion
Cole minor gloves have metal over the knuckles to help prevent hand injuries...so basically it was like having brass knuckles on a pole...Vinny Ru approved!
That happens to me a lot when I watch a video that was just uploaded. It just happens when you watch a video almost immediately after it gets uploaded.
The thunderdome cage match. Not so much the flimsy looking cage, but the idea of someone else having to throw the towel in to lose the match for whomever they support. Could make for some epic, violent matches.
Spin the wheel to determine the match, gauntlet matches, black world champions, tag teams winning tournaments for trophies, cages with roofs, heel factions, supercard shows...basically anything you’ve seen on wrestling shows since the 80s, there’s a damn good chance WCW did it first
Was a big Goldberg fan and still enjoy that character, but now going back and watching nitro I would have to say favorite worker is Diamond Dallas Page!!
I also was always a WWF kid. They were my jam and Hulk Hogan was my guy. But I did watch WCW and remember being pretty intrigued by the Black Scorpion angle. So much so that, and again as a total WWF kid, when told at the time, we can afford to get one upcoming ppv, the Royal freaking Rumble, or Starrcade where the whole Black Scorpion deal was going to be blown off, I picked Starrcade, because I just had to know who this guy was from Stings past. Now over the last couple of years I've heard folks speak very poorly of this angle and how cheesy and stupid it was. Having not seen it in about 30 I went and watched some clips and yes, it did not age well at all. But as a youth that was some cool shib.
Man call me old school but I miss the days nights actually when I was a wcw fan boy but my classmate turn me into wwf/wwe fan I switch back and forth to both shows,I rem amber a great ideal a concept they had in wcw that could put them back at the top if they done it sooner called triple cage match.
Might be the first video I’ve seen where he doesn’t call it “dubya-see-dubya” thank god lol. Simon is entertaining tho. The first Raven pic was from his WWE run, and his original gimmick before Raven was Johnny Polo, a rich kid who was a manager and heel commentator. So the plot twist in WCW is kinda just reverting back to an old gimmick and not all that original. Idk why I felt compelled to say all this lol
OMG Simon sorry for saying this on this video but 8/3/2020 WWE RAW finally broke my mental stability with the screwy finishes, Sasha vs Shania bazler didnt make any sense lol but a counter like the roll up 1 is def needed😉
DiBiase as the financial backer worked better than Bischoff. If Eric ran WCW why would he want to destroy it? Diniase made more sense and if they worked an angle where Turner or “board of directors” fired Eric and then later on it was him, that adds more heat to the stable and gives it more legs and makes more sense. Making it Bischoff from basically the beginning was a mistake.
@David R They can't win huh? Who wins in the ratings every week and also in the key demo every week? Oh yeah AEW. Hmmmmmm and who is cosntantly losing fans in large numbers and is in no way near as large as they once was? Oh yeah WWE. So how is the company who can't get people to view NXT the show at one point people called the best wrestling show on the network gonna win when the other show is doing better in every way?
Chasity doing porn stopped the Raven storyline. Remember chasity and sandman were in the later skits. Chasity was playing ravens sister. Wcw found about a porn she did called live bait . The fired her and it killed the story
Coal miners glove match....those gloves r basically just work gloves...wore a similar pair(a lotta pairs) at a lumber mill for 8 years almost....so no...getting hit by the glove wouldnt be that devastating....now if it had a puece of steel or something sown in around the knuckle areas of the glove....yeah that would knock someone out...
That was the premise. There was steel over the knuckles to protect them from the rocks crashing down. The matches were done in Portland and very well explained. Watts used them in Mid South too. WCW just assumed everyone knew what it was and didn't explain the lead covered knuckles.
If Herd was upset about Ric Flair being the black scorpion like you said he's an even bigger idiot than I thought. He had to agree ,along with Ole, that Flair would get another world title run.
The Television Title. A championship defended with a ten minute time limit. Great way to make new stars or rekindle interest in established guys.
I miss WCW so much. The Monday Night Wars era was such a wonderful time to be a wrestling fan. I miss switching back and forth between WCW Nitro and WWF Monday night Raw. I used to record them both on VHS at the same time. Miss my childhood.
I started watching WCW in 2000. I don't have many fond memories of it....
Awesome
I have some moments watching WCW but not all of it.
Same here
I started in 96 it was great
I remember the Black Scorpion vividly, as an 11/12 year old kid and I was really interested in that storyline... I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed that it was just Ric Flair yet again, but all those vignettes and run ins and stuff really had me interested in who it was to be...

"Don't we all love Raven, yes!"
Raven was one of my favorites of that time. I really wanted him to go to WWF, and have a feud with Mankind.
I hate that the wwf used the "hardcore raven" ironically. He would bring out a trash can and always get beat by his own weapons
Well yes we all love Raven, but don't we all love Bobby more?🤣
yeah, he rules. I wish he was made world heavyweight champion in wcw
There you are at 11:59 getting wasted and here's Raven. Ah I love Raven. I friggin laughed so hard

The Lethal Lottery was a fantastic premise to book a lot of underused wrestlers in interesting combinations.
I don't see why other promotions don't use that idea since it's so intriguing and when done well, damn right entertaining.
I was actually watching old stuff on the WWE Network recently and ended up watching one of those Lethal Lottery things...I was literally thinking, damn WWE should do this!
@@chrisjamesr77 what's more amazing is that none of the pairings were staged, so all the wrestlers went in blind and called it on the fly.
The crow sting it was great going strong then they put him in the wolf pack. He should have stayed the solo vigilante never knowing what he's going to do or what the motivations behind his actions are.
Before he was Raven, he was Johnny Polo in WWF(E). He was already " the rich kid". So, WCW copied that storyline!!!
And before Johnny Polo in WWF he was Scotty Flamingo, a spoiled rich kid, in WCW.
They kinda hinted he was a spoiled rich kid slumming it in ECW too
Please bring back rock reacts really made my day
Just found it gave it it's own channel
Lol I thought the Raven spoiled rich kid was funny I remember on thunder him and Kanyon taking a fancy car to the mall buying fancy clothes
I'm not sure if it was an original WCW idea, but the large faction idea is a good one to me. I remember the Dungeon of Doom back in the day. That was really good. I would love another list like this.
As far as I can remember, Sting and Warrior never wrestled each other.
Na they didn’t. They must have sparred with each other back I the day. The closest they came to having a match was War Games ‘98. But they didn’t even cross paths.
They were the blade runners.the skit said a former friend of sting that hated him now.
Blade Runners

I think we need a GIF of Simon's "dancing away".
The Crockett Cup is still going on in the NWA, was reinstated back in 2015... 🤔🤷🏻♂️
Seven. The vignettes got fans talking about just who this guy is (I mean personality-wise; everyone knew it was Dustin Rhodes) and what he would do. The character never made it to the ring IIRC.

The Black Scorpion gets soooooooooooo much hate but it's one of my all time favorite angles that I still talk about to this day. Love that one!
I remember watching a WCW were macho man stood in the middle of the ring felt like 20 minutes just sitting there live TV...
Yeah, a cruiserweight match was starting as he was still in the ring. I just watched that episode.
I remember digging out my old copies of PWI for an article that talked about Sting & Ultimate Warrior starting out training with a group called Powerteam USA. It had four members. I remember thinking maybe one of the other two was going to be the Black Scorpion

First time I’ve ever seen a video with 1 view
My screen says the video posted 34 minutes ago and your comment was posted 35 minutes ago 😂😂😂
I've seen videos with "No Views".
Thumbnails being changed.
Videos deleted and uploaded a few days later.😅
That happens to me a lot when I watch a video that was just uploaded.
It just happens when you watch a video almost immediately after it gets uploaded.
2.4K Views!!!
Crow Sting vs the nWo was ruined by the Wolfpack, fught me
The thunderdome cage match. Not so much the flimsy looking cage, but the idea of someone else having to throw the towel in to lose the match for whomever they support. Could make for some epic, violent matches.
That moment when you realize WhatCulture Wrestling and World Championship Wrestling have the same abbreviation.
Whatcultures wrestling promotion was WCPW
All lives matter. All are equal. Stop bowing down to what the media shovels. Love all, hate no one
Cactus Jack’s Memory Loss Storyline is one that always sticks out to me.
I actually loved that raven angle very entertaining
As Mick Foley said in his first book, most good ideas in the waning days of WCW, were ended as soon as they started to get too popular.
Spin the wheel to determine the match, gauntlet matches, black world champions, tag teams winning tournaments for trophies, cages with roofs, heel factions, supercard shows...basically anything you’ve seen on wrestling shows since the 80s, there’s a damn good chance WCW did it first
I feel like I see one of these WCW videos every couple of weeks or so. Is that just me?
themondoshow seriously
Spin the wheel make the deal? They stole that from mad max beyond thunderdome!
It's the 35th anniversary of back to the future, just passed.
the battle bowl
Was a big Goldberg fan and still enjoy that character, but now going back and watching nitro I would have to say favorite worker is Diamond Dallas Page!!
The hacker is gonna be the leader of retribution, calling it now
I also was always a WWF kid. They were my jam and Hulk Hogan was my guy. But I did watch WCW and remember being pretty intrigued by the Black Scorpion angle. Everything and anything that has to do with Kanyon . I ask you , Who betta than Kanyon ?
EVERYBODY!😁
It's about time Simon makes his AEW debut against Cody in an ups and downs match.
WCW did kind of do the Crocket cup again at Starrcade 89 and 90 it's just it wasn't called the Crocket cup.
I remember sandman was supposed to be ravens older brother in that storyline
Review a wcw episode from 23 years ago And comparing ups and downs to raw or aew
The cruiser weight tag division was a good idea
Coal Miners wear gloves to protect themselves from errant swings and are kinda like steel toe boots for your hands.
Like they say on music videos,
RUclips is a time machine.
The glove was lead loaded, Supposedly.
Would love to have your opinion on Ministry of Darkness Simon
Supposedly the black scorpion was going to be the warrior. They talked to him, but wwf gave him more money
I remember seeing Goldberg winning his 74th match live in Beaumont, TX on Thunder.
Man call me old school but I miss the days nights actually when I was a wcw fan boy but my classmate turn me into wwf/wwe fan I switch back and forth to both shows,I rem amber a great ideal a concept they had in wcw that could put them back at the top if they done it sooner called triple cage match.
Ay man, I'm old school too attitude era and WCW Golden era and I have a 1959 ford u ain't the only one
Same here
what if belson from the Clarence cartoon is a young Raven
Ravens flock was stopped by the powers that be because they thought it was too satanic
I was 6 and was full time WCW fan (Goldberg). Then got hold of an Undertaker VHS tape and a creature of the night was born!
Am I the only one here who can totally picture present day Ric Flair hatching out of a giant egg?
Oz. If they’d kept Kevin Nash as Oz, then the whole wrestling world would be better.
Wcw would still be in business!
Maybe cuz I was a teenager but wrestling felt so much more unpredictable back then...
How about the battle bowl. Random guys tag team then the winners battle royal for a ring or something. Pointlessly good
"Awwwh sweet i's Ravun. I luv Ravun"
Might be the first video I’ve seen where he doesn’t call it “dubya-see-dubya” thank god lol. Simon is entertaining tho.

I'd watch wcw and the other kids would watch raw and we would keep each other updated back in the days.
Raven a spoilt rich kid in WCW . Johnny Polo spoilt rich kid in WWF . If you don't see any similarity they're one and the same guy .
Ask Sting if he remembers Tulsa...
The L.W.O. should’ve lasted longer. The luchadores were my favorite thing
Man I do miss WCW
I never understood sting having a crow angle. It was obviously a 🦂
The Hummer of course.
When you run out of ideals so you bring up a dead company
When you can’t type correctly so you say ideals instead of ideas.
How much caffeine did this guy take before filming this?
The reason Ted Dibiasse in the n.W.o didn't last was because he left over creative differences
Robocop was awesome! Lol
WCW isn't dead? Its AEW
You can't tell me that the dusty Rhodes tag team classic isn't a modern, WWE take on the Crockett cup
WCW was soo damn good
Raven being rich was awful and the WCW relaunch were terrible
It ruined the whole Raven character ECW had built
WWE vs WCW= WWE wins by buying WCW
*20 years later*
WWE vs AEW= oh crap better watch out AEW
@David R They can't win huh? Who wins in the ratings every week and also in the key demo every week? Oh yeah AEW. Hmmmmmm and who is cosntantly losing fans in large numbers and is in no way near as large as they once was? Oh yeah WWE. I don't get why people get so riled up about which competitive stunt fighting company is better.
Larry Harris oh crap I just started a war here
Larry Harris honestly I like how chill you are
The best idea WCW ever had: don't be the WWF.
Shit, there are those of us that thought WCW wouldn't last when they stopped callin' it "Georgia Championship Wrestling" js
Let's see a wwe version
Chasity doing porn stopped the Raven storyline. Remember chasity and sandman were in the later skits. Chasity was playing ravens sister. Wcw found about a porn she did called live bait . The fired her and it killed the story
Always liked wcw best...well until about 2000

There attempt at making a hardcore title

I thought they thought it was gonna be the undertaker coming out of the egg??
No, Mark Calloway was worried he would be the guy in the egg. Thankfully he was a zombie mortician instead haha

Why is a list of 8 taking up a 12 minute video. Love you Simon, but you gotta stop waffling mate, got places to be!
Anyone else notice the pandering in the upper right hand corner?
Where is Lethal Lottery?
If Herd was upset about Ric Flair being the black scorpion like you said he's an even bigger idiot than I thought. He had to agree ,along with Ole, that Flair would get another world title run.
He did. 3 weeks later.
The Nitro Girls
