The songs are not sad the ragas are not sad they are the outpour of the melodies the Sanchara- bhavas of the structure of ragas and the singer or the musician brings out the same with full of emotions. In fact raga soothes the mind and brings balance to the mind. Ragas bring freshness and destroys mental fatigue.
Questions to be put not when the demonstrator is talking. First the ideas are to be taken from the lecturer and thereafter the analysis are to be questioned to really get good understanding .
Too many questions are actually digressing the original flow. Could ve been better to let him speak freely without interjecting with too many qs..more practical examples would ve helped follow better..
I think there is a problem when he says that the meaning in just the melodic movement and the meaning in the sahithyas are not totally independent. I am of the opinion they are. There are several dangers in this line. In western classical music there has been a clear differentiating line. The music is self-fulfilling and has a meaning of its own. Can express everything it wants without words and even without other 'subjective' markings to indicate the mood of the piece (for example - the composer scripting the following mark on his score 'to be played as though one was passing through a meadow'). The piece can express without such an indication. What that indication does is to specifically point out the 'subjective' mood of the composer at that specific time. Without that we can still perceive objectively the general realm of emotion that the composer felt. Our 'subjective' experience changes (even the composer's own perception of his song changes!!!) . If there are words and other such indications, then such serves to specify the subjective experience When i am hearing Jagadharana karaka, not knowing the language (and fortunate indeed for that), i only can percieve the meaning of the melodic line. Not the meaning of sahithya. But i know that the range of emotions that i feel will be near what the sahithya describes. I get a feeling of great celebration on hearing the piece. This subjective experience may change with the interpretation of the performer and also with so many other factors. But the emotion it inspires will never be the same that say raga varali inspires. Nobody can say that Jagadharana karaka is a sad song - Not based on the lyrics but solely based on its melodic patterns and its harmonic implications. You can replace the lyrics with some sad words in a language you don't understand - you will not be able to percieve a change.
While there is universal agreement that a particular melody triggers a particular type of emotion, I am not too sure that without accompanying lyrics that one can understand the nuance of the emotion is fully and precisely experienced. A beautiful sunset and the smile on a beautiful baby's face may both evoke a sense of joy but are they the same? Do they set off a trail of memories which are identical? Are we assuming too much here without testing adequately?
