I have a 60V I've owned for two years and, on my last mow of the previous season, I messed up the blade on a metal landscaping divider I thought I could clear. This video was exactly what I was hoping to find for an intro to replacing the blade. Talk about good timing for my search compared to your post.

Thanks for this video! For what it is worth, when I replaced my blade today the housing was still fine, and it didn't take much effort at all with a 15mm wrench. Had the impact wrench ready, but you may find you don't need it at all.
It's keyed that way so that in an extreme case of the blade hitting something hard, it will break at an easily replaceable part. Rather than just keep driving and tearing itself apart. If yours broke from wear than that's not good, but probably not planned obsolescence.

I was thinking about that after I recorded it. Probably acts as a automatic disconnect so that the shaft doesn’t warp. Here’s what I don’t get though: gas mowers do not require this sort of thing. So why do electric mowers need it?

@@createthisdotcom Gas/Petrol mowers do not need a cooling fan under the deck. They have a blade boss that will either have sheer pins holding the blade tight that will sheer off if you hit something solid like a concrete block or the hole blade boss is designed to sheer/snap off all to save the shaft.
Battery mowers need a fan to keep cool, so this is a two birds with one stone so to speak.
Most metric mower blade bolts are either a 14mm or 16mm to keep fairly close to the imperial size used by US mower manufacturers. Some twin decks with rear collection will have different sized bolts so the mechanic will not mix up the left-hand and right-hand treaded bolts as the blades will turn clock-wise or counter-clock-wise.
Greenworks also manufacture Echo & Stihl plus others. Their handheld battery tools are also really good.
@createthis gas mowers do. So.e part will always be designed to fail as a mechanical fuse to protect major components. Although I'm always annoyed by riding mowers, the star pattern is soft in order to "protect" the spindle, but they fail often and the cheapest easiest fix almost always ends up being replacing the whole spindle it claims to protect
I just purchased the same mower with (1) 4ah battery for $260/shipped on Amazon. It then went on sale again, so I purchased a 2nd mower just for the extra battery. So after I sell the mower I will end up paying about $325 for this mower and (2) 4ah batteries. Has worked wonderfully so far, so happy that I made the switch to electric! Thanks 4 the vids!
Bought a new Greenworks Pro (6) weeks ago. Free spinning is the culprit for failure to cut. Thanks for the tip. I've already placed a return order with Amazon, but I know how to change the blade on my new one.

I think the plastic keys are actually an engineered point of failure, because it’s cheaper to replace that part compared to the electric motor (if the blade gets jammed and the motor keeps running and burns itself out).

Posting on September 1, 2024 - like many others finding the green fan part is very difficult - I could not find it on Amazon or Greenworks website. Several were available on eBay. I suspect someone could 3D print them too.

I'm getting ready to do this as my existing blade is really dull and has been since I bought it brand new. That's my only complaint with this mower. I have the self propelled

On Greenworks with the part # you provided only shows the blade for sale , or does it come with the plastic thing to hold the blade on ???
Is anyone having luck finding replacement parts for this mower? I have tried looking for the kit and the parts separately and haven't found them in stock anywhere as of yet.
It's September 2024 and the part doesn't show up easily so far. Still looking.

I wouldn't say it is planned obsolescence, but for protection of the motor and shaft. I you hit something, like a rock or root, it will break the fan assembly before bending the shaft on the motor.
Same issue on mine greenworks pro 60V. Kept falling off. Bought it back in 2018, started this problem last year.
Very informative video. However, one problem; I've spent two days searching the internet trying to find Greenworks Blade Replacement Kit (R020244-00) as published
in the owner's manual that came with my 80v Pro mower that I purchased on July 26, 2022. No where could I find a blade assembly kit for my mower or a 60V mower.
I'm beginning to believe that "createthis" is correct in thinking this plastic fan is Greenworks attempt to create Programed Obsolesce into their mowers.
If I had to guess, it’s probably increased summer peak demand selling them out. This is not a complicated part. It should be trivial for cottage industry to come up with replacements if greenworks can’t keep up with demand.
I am having difficulties finding this piece myself, I am seriously considering getting in to 3D printing just to replace this part. The mower is otherwise pretty good, so I am not going to replace it if I don't have to.
@@Sanadis Agreed. I suspect they'll do another production run, but if they don't, 3d printing or lost wax casting would be good alternatives. I've got my old broken part laying around in case I need it, just for this purpose.

According to the instructions, the bolt should be torqued to 24 to 27 foot-pounds.

You don't use a torque wrench to tighten bolt?
Cut the 2x4 to fit tight inside the deck so the blade edge bites into the 1.5" side of the 2x4 and the blade won't spin on you. And all you need is a $10 breaker bar and socket, not a $200 impact. Put a little grease or anti-seize on the bolt before you reinstall.
What is a breaker bar?
It’s just a wrench with a longer handle so you can put more torque on it.
Well rather that plastic piece break than anything else??? Maybe?
There's a special tool that clamps to the mower and holds the blade in place. But a piece of wood works ok.
Nice sell to the wife about the need for that impact drill for this job. A ratchet definitely wouldn't have done exactly the same thing. Definitely. For sure need that. 🤭
Where can you buy the green fan part that you replaced?
Google R0200742-00. That’s the assembly I purchased. I don’t know the part number for the green fan itself. Maybe call greenworks and ask, then let me know so I can buy a spare.

With what you paid for that Milwaukee you could buy a new and better mower but hey thats a great excuse to get new tools lol

You should convince your wife you need a 3d printer to make your spare parts out of abs plastic or p.l.a
