    Yes Garmin should hire you and yes this is the first video that actually pulls you through the how to for hiking!! This is a must see for all Fenix 6X Pro hikers . Like others I will watch this video multiple times. Can't thank you enough!!

    This is by far the best video I've seen, the first review that truly focuses on real-world usage, especially the one I want for hiking. It's amazing and definitely worth it. The 1.4 screen size makes a huge difference compared to previous or smaller versions.

      Thank you! Yea, I try to walk through the features in real-life scenarios instead of just being a talking head. I also use the thing for months before I recommend it, and if it sucks, I just don't even bother with a video. So thank you for the note, glad it came in handy!

      My thoughts exactly! I mean, probably a lot of people buying this watch are planning on hiking with it, otherwise it's kind of a money waste compare to their other models.
      So you would expect to find some decent hiking review on it, but it was the first decent one I encountered.

    I agree this is one of the best videos on this watch for hiking. I bought this 6x sapphire watch last week for upcoming hiking season. In everyday life I wear an Apple Watch but if we go hiking this one’s coming with me. Just as a backup I bought the gpsmap 64sx which has battery operated gps with a much larger screen. I’m so happy to try this out. Saw the price had dropped to 400 and grabbed that right up.

    This is one fine review. All the info and detail that you would get if your buddy showed up with one of these on his wrist, and you were peppering him with questions about it. In other words, the stuff you want to know and none of the borderline marketing pitch. Excellent! One question: Are the size and weight off-putting at all? Is its bulk easy to live with?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  4 года назад

      Thanks so much, that's music to my ears because when I do these, I always take the approach as if I'm explaining it to a buddy. So really happy that it came in handy. In terms of the size/weight, if you're not used to wearing a Fenix (or any big watch), it will seem big at first. But you easily get used to it; I don't even think about it being there. It's not as big as some of those crazy expensive ones, but it's definitely a little beefy.

    Another highly informative review, thanks. The main thing that worries me about these high ticket, high end watches is three years down the road they will be very dated as technology and design progresses, so they're no long term investment. I think I will go mid range, look after the watch carefully and sell on two to three years later to fund it's replacement. I don't need HR monitoring so the Casio WSD-F30 with it's few niggles is about the sweet spot for me.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  4 года назад

      Thanks for the note, and yea, it's expensive. Garmin is running the same playbook as Apple, etc., offering a new and improved version every year or so. Think it's just how it goes these days. And yea, if you don't need the HR, then def overkill.

    Great video as usual! Your 66i video was super helpful when I first got started using that device. Anyhow, back to the fenix 6 pro. When you were navigating the hike showing the screens you had a screen I think you called a "Navigation Bug" (around 34:00 in the video). Is that a custom screen you made? I tried creating it myself but couldn't find the right combo of data fields. Thanks again for all the content you publish here and on your site!

    Thanks for a great review, I saw several others that didn't cover much real world usage and I appreciate the hiking context.
    I've never had a Garmin watch before, but in another review they touched on "heat maps" and some kind of on-the-fly routing based, I guess, on the activity of other Garmin users.
    Can you confirm that if you're out wandering on a hike that you can choose to create a course on-the-fly based on the past actions of other users? Does this function well?

      Thank you, glad the review came in handy. 👍 And yes, you can chose to create a route based on popularity, and it works fine. I haven't used it for a hike since I always generally know what I want to do, but I've used it for runs when I'm traveling and it works well.

      @@Hikingguy Thanks a lot. One more question if you don't mind. I'm not familiar with Garmin Connect, but I do have an older handheld Garmin GPSmap62s. Are you able to export the "tracks" as gpx or similar via Garmin Connect or the watch itself? Say, if I wanted to see what I did in Google Earth or something.

    Thank you for the awesome overview! One question I have for more long distance, or just multiway hiking. If you upload a gpx file with a trail that you plan on completing in several days (say its a 100 miles long), are you able to use the course function in the same way? As in, select the entire trail as a course each day, but only complete a portion of it?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  3 года назад +1

      If you use a GPX track, you can split it or leave it as one big line and it's fine either way. If you want the watch to route you itself and you are using a GPX route, then it's 50 points on the route. I'd highly recommend using tracks and just see if you're on the line or not. This might be helpful > hikingguy.com/how-to-hike/what-is-a-gpx-file/

    Gday, great vid very informative. Just after a bit more info please. I bought my I like to do a bit of gold detecting and bought the 6X Pro with the idea of parking up, setting a way point where my truck is, wander into the scrub not to far maybe 150m but no line of sight back to the truck. Hit track back and be guided back to where i was parked. Not sure what i did wrong but when in track back mode i was showing me to go the opposite way back (the wrong way) i did get back to the truck no worries but my heart was in my mouth for a little while.
    Any tips would be great, not interested in making any course's prior to going out.

    • @Hikingguy

      The maps are decent, you have topo lines and a lot of trails (especially compared to just a few years ago). I use the topo contours to get a rough idea of slope but don't use them to count specific altitude. It's a good tool to have in conjunction with paper maps, which I pull out when I want to dig deeper. I use the Fenix for a quick glance at my position and the topography around me.
