While visiting in my brother's cabin I happened to look out the window at the waves being churned up in the patch of rough weather we were experiencing. They live in large numbers just off the coast of Los Angeles and are seen daily by tourists on boats from the offshore island of Catalina. We have no marlin or swordfish native here as far as I know. Pelicans and gulls might prey on them but they usually glide around dusk and dawm when they're hard to spot from the air by birds. People in boats can see them well and they're attracted by lights.
I think that the narrator is wrong about the swordfish , they live in the deep and mainly eat squid. I've only ever seen Tuna chasing flying fish. There are lots of both in the Gulf of Mexico.
Saw them many years ago on a cruise ship called The Song Of Norway. Thousands of them. When the light hit them at the right angle they had iridescent rainbow colors, not all at the same time, but blue, green, and a rare red. They were all sizes tiny ones like minnows, and big ones that sometimes glided so far they went out of sight. Incredible, a fish that comes close to flying….
At sea, the most beautiful sight I ever saw was a flying fish flying straight towards the boat, (about 20 feet from me while on a 40 foot sailboat.) Then all of a sudden a baby spotted dolphin jumped out of the water right behind it. The baby dolphin was chasing it! Both of them were completely out of the water at the same moment. I hope I carry that image with me to my dieing day. After spending years at sea, that is the most beautiful thing I ever saw out there. Thank you God.
🌸 beautiful seen them as child in Barbados’s waters. Once I saw strange flying creature insect I should say that looked like flying spider. I didn’t hang around to check it out to busy bawling & running. It was in Caribbean in Trinidad’s rainforest. I was 14yrs, cannot tell you what it was
These fish are something I took for granted growing up windsurfing on Aruba. They are so cool. They swim in groups of hundreds or more and all start flying at the same time when startled.
It's really cool to watch them flying in person, usually fleeing from a school of Tuna. If you want to catch a nice Yellowfin Tuna you can use one for a bait , or you can use a lure that looks like a flying fish.
I suddenly remembered when we were on vacation and while I enjoy watching them to fly all over the boat were on there are two flying fish that hit me like a dart while I'm eating my snack on the bench🤣 and it hurts since I'm just 7 years of age at that time.
Wow! They are very majestic flying fish. I'm sure that it's even fun for them while doing so as well. But what a life to have to live just to simply avoid predators.

We are witnessing the evolutionary transition between gliding and ACTUAL flying fish, which will be solid about a million years from now.
Evolution doesn't work like that, "actual flying fish" isn't some end goal they're working on
