I'm a old microwave tech. The smaller tower with the two parabolic dishes. The larger dish transmits further distance. One direction trans-recieve signal from a far end location, the weak signal is measured in decibels. The weak signal is amplified by the parabic dish, and routed through the waveguide down the tower to the microwave equipment. The rf signal is sent back up the the other antenna in a different direction. The small room is for a generator in the event of commercial power failure . The generator room had to have an exhaust pipe or chimeny, the generator room had to be separated from the microwave equipment room, because of the exhaust. The smaller microwave was used by a private network, oil company or train company, connecting phone or data for head quarters to a remote location.
These towers were part of the AT&T Long Lines. If you google it you will find websites dedicated to the history of this network including the L Carrier network, which was a transcontinental coaxial cable line, which I believe is abandoned as well. I have 3 of these towers in my area here in Berks County and two sites in neighboring Montgomery County,as well as the L carrier transcontinental coaxial cable line running through my area. Some of the sites like the one outside of Pennsburg and Pottstown have underground bunkers with nuclear blast detectors around them. It's a shame that these sites are abandoned and no longer in use but when the fiber optic came about as well as satellite technology and the cold war ending sites like this were no longer needed. American Tower bought some of the AT&T sites and converted them into cell phone towers. I think you might have mentioned some of these facts in your first video.
The entire process of voice communications on modern networks is mind blowing. Billions of people using phones are unaware of just what happens in fractions of milliseconds. Humans arent on the level of ETs yet, but we have made tremendous strides..

That shelter can withstand a direct hit from an EF5 tornado. I went in one that survived an EF 4 from Washington inl he it was in great condition although the TD-2 tower was gone.

You are amazing at what you do. This premiere tonight again just amazing work. Those guys, that vehicle, very sketchy. Glad you don't go alone & have protection. :)
Pagan, my first car was found in a field with the key in it. My mom put used tires on it and had to replace one panel of glass. It was a 1968 Rambler Station Wagon. It lasted 9 months , through my senior year. I loved that baby!! Also had to advertise in the newspaper for a lien against it. No one responded.
This is one of your best introductions to a video. Deft editing of arriving in your vehicle and a few crisp foreshadow clips. Well done, Mr. Spielberg.
I know it's obsolete now, but in some ways it's sad. This was an absolutely revolutionary technology at its time. Now it rots because a little cable half an inch in diameter can carry exponentially more data. There are a lot of these sites near me, but all are repurposed and active, thanks for the up close look!
The floor plan equipment layout of this particular microwave repeater building may be found on page 1518 of the September 1968 Bell System Technical Journal. PDF archives of the BSTJ may be found at: www.americanradiohistory.com/ in the Technical - Specialized "Company" Magazines section. BSTJ was page-numbered consecutively from the January issue so that page 1518 is actually page 376 of the September PDF. The Sept. The papers are technical in nature but there is a lot of information easily understood by the average electronics aficionado - enjoy - waw -

Hey y'all 🖐🏼. THAT was an awesome trick when you disappeared. I wasn't expecting that ‼️ it's really way back in the cut. Thanks for sharing the details with US.🖐🏼😃👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💙.
It's actually kinda sad to see all this go. It plays a big part in the history of how wireless technology came to be. It would be awesome if someone were to preserve a long lines from start to finish with all equipment on a short range scale naturally,as a museum just to show our youth how it works and what history has brought us today.
AT&T and Bell bought this land around 1966 and this particular tower was built right about 1970. It was altered slightly some time in 1974 and the contract officially expired for this site in early 2001 but was probably unused since 1993 at the latest but most likely unused since the late 1980's since fiber optic technology was the newest thing during that time. It stood 82 feet tall and it's first call was placed in late 1970 early 1971. The horn antennas are from bell technologies and the ones on the very top from a different manufacturer. The smaller tower I believe was affiliated with that possibly as a relay and those late dishes appear to be microwave dishes as well. Awesome video. Sadly this site was recently demolished in March 2020.

Right next to the tower, there used to be a 6 foot statue of the Virgin Mary with their arms outstretched. For years, people went up there and put coin offerings in her hands. There was a pedestal the statue was mounted on. I can't remember the name, but it was from 1947.
I forgot to add that about 10 or 15 years ago. Some people went up there and shot the statue all up and then knocked it over. What A? Shame it would be nice to find out who did something like this.

Well that was pretty exciting, seeing those three guys. I think they came to grab it for themselves, saw you two and decided to come back later. An interesting place. Feels a bit spooky for some reason and I was glad you decided not to climb that tower, otherwise I would not have been able to watch. Not my thing either..lol... Plus, I don't mind either format, speaking or not speaking.. I like both. :-)
Microwave ovens were invented when they found out that birds would explode if they flew in front of the horns. The miniaturization technology wasn't available in the 60's, so they didn't have them small enough to put in your kitchen. These horns were over 100,000 watts, so that explains the bird issue. Good thing that fibre optic systems were invented.
