Good review. 32 bit float is the train that all companies are going to be riding on for the next few years, and I agree with you that people should still learn to set their gain properly.
For videographers and film makers or for people doing unscripted podcasts 32bit float is a GODSEND! Especially for one man outfits like me where I'm the DoP, Director, Gaffer, Sound Engineer ... not having to worry about clipping is amazing.
I just wish I had bought a 32bit float recorder when I replaced my old Tascam Dr40 with a DR40x after I broke it. I have access to the safety track feature where I can record the same audio to a second file at a much lower gain and that HAS saved my but on a few occasions but wiht 32bit float I wouldn;t have to worry about that at all.
Not sure how useful 32bit float is in a controlled environment.
I'm doing sound design and foley for a client's short film right now. Their sound guy didn't show up so the producer ended up subbing in ... on top of having takes with bad enviromental noise (loud motorcycles passing buy) and other issues like bad mic placement and no room treatment so tons of reverb there was TONS OF CLIPPING! 32bit float would have really saved their bacon.
Thank you for pointing out the daw compatibility issue.
Thanks for the review! I agree with you about the zoom preamps. However, 32 bit floating-point is not just more headroom. It’s a wider dynamic range - 1528 dB, to be exact. By comparison, 24 bit fixed-point offers 144 dB of dynamic range. This is why there’s no need to set levels with 32 bit float.
I just love how people use "dB" in most meaningless way : p
Like somehow 32 bit can record 1528dbSPL while 24bit 144dBSPL. And what when we record in 1-bit SDS? ;)
And those recorders output 32 float files don't actually record anything in it. They use two 32bit ADC with different gains.
2:10 ..... awesome 23BIT Float ! Killer graphics!
Sigh...lol
32 bits floating point is objectively better.
I do this for a living, but it's still is better period. You are certain to not clip unless you want to, basically. There are also some scenarios that can happen : Hi-Z inputs on interfaces like this do not usually have the headroom to take very very hot pick-ups, for example.
Using a device like this do NOT prevent you from learning how to set gain.
Using a device like this prevent you from mistakes anyone can make, especially in live recording situations. I don't know why people push against it. I've always found Zoom products to be exceptionally reliable; I still use my R16/24 professionally for small on-location concert recordings, believe it or not. Great result, stability is perfect. Behringer can eat my shit at this price point. Zoom is the most underrated company in audio IMHO.
This unit actually does NOT have gain controls....so...ummm...yeah...this might actually get in the way of learning how to use gain.
And while it might be perfect for YOU in what YOU are doing, 32 bit float is NOT actually objectively better.
The use of this requires many different things to be in place for it to actually work...and all for the ability to clip?
Why bother?
It has its uses, but this...aint it
You could use the rails to loop a belt to harness around your waist for location recording with your smartphone.
Another headphone issue that may be an issue for others is that the output is very low especially if they want to drive professional headphones. The specs seem a bit low for monitors as well, so people would have to turn up their monitors a great deal to match what they got from a previous interface. As for the headphones, there may be need for a separate headphone amp.
Is it correct to say that 32-bit float only works for recording? What about livestreaming: how do you adjust the levels then? Can the output of this interface be used with OBS?
I'm waiting for another company to do this as do prefer a metal exterior.
I often have trouble with the dynamics of my voice in recordings for my videos, I get loud and then get real quiet and I've had difficulty in the past with clipping and having to re-record things at different gain settings to get things right and this seems like the perfect solution to that problem. Though I think I'll wait to see what other 32-bit float interfaces pop up this year before I bite the bullet.
This one is nice...and honestly...the new NT1 from Rode is amazing if you don't mind usb.
My review of that drops next week
I really like this interface. Preety cool and straight forward. Thanks for showing it.
I went for the Motu M4 and love it to bits
I did too 😄
Does anyone know if the Zoom UAC-232 and Zoom R4 have the same preamps? Seems like for the same price or-- at most-- twenty bucks more, someone looking for a 32 bit float USB audio interface might as well opt for the ability to additionally have a 4-track field recorder with a mic.
Bump. I would also like to know the same
Hey, awesome review, and I like your style :) Did I understand correctly that you can't even set input gain?? I mean there are no input gain knobs and apparently the software mixer doesn't either... You have to fix everything in post?
Yep!
@@DarkCornerStudios Thanks! :)
Do I still Need the ZOOM UAC 232 if the condenser microphone connect direct to an amplifier/mixer for our church
Thank you for the video. The Amazon Canadian link is a problem. Currently not available. Which might be a good thing. I have poor impulse control, little self restraint and a strong affection for the floats of 32.
ZOOM UAC-232 utilizes an interesting but not new idea of 2 ADCs with different gain preamps, and nothing regarding 32b float. The idea came from the industrial design and its drawback is well-known - a poor linearity due to nearly impossible to match gains vs ADCs switching level. The same problem with ZOOM UAC-232, the interface has the THD level(-90db@1k) like your laptop built-in audio 3.5mm jack or even worse. At the same time, the top ADC chip ES9822 has THD 200x times less with 125db(A) of the dynamic range, which is more than enough for everything you may need.
Hello, Do I still Need the ZOOM UAC 232 if the condenser microphone connect direct to an amplifier for church.
Pls enlighten me. Thank you so much.
Good day to you mate
Can you take 2 lines outputs from Yamaha Mixer then feeding it to this interface, for Instagram live streaming using my iphone?
If you have any ideas, I would appreciate it
I have not investigated the floating 32-bit thing yet. It seems relatively pointless for speech (ie: podcasters) but might be really cool for anything with hot transients (ie: drums & percussions).
one of your pop up labels (2:11) was 23bit float, a simple typo that made me blink. Luckily you said and showed the correct value about 100 times, so I guess it is OK. thanks. lol
He has a review coming on DNA kits. Who do you think you really are?
This so amazing zoom uac 232 32 bit floating recording and have 130 db preamp i want to buy this . Thanks My Brother
thanks for the info!
Thank you for the detailed review! Sorry if it's kind of obvious, but I'd love to know: Does 32-bit float through the UAC-232 provide preak protection for any recording equipment connected to it? For example, I have an sE Electronics mic with an XLR cable and a Boss Katana amp through its Line Out (with an unbalanced, mono TRS cable) both connected to my current interface. Would connecting both things to this interface with the same cables provide peak protection to both signals at the same time (when using a compatible DAW)? If so, it'd be an insanely powerful tool for any project really.
Yes.
And I will cover this in an upcoming Q&A
Hi, i'm a bit confused, why on their website they mentionned 100mV/ channel for the headphones and in your video it is 10mV/ channels ?
I would have to recheck my numbers.
I may have misspoke.
It has happened before.
Might be worth checking out other reviews to see what they say
Most pro music people and studio's use a Mac ! Try using pro software. Headphones during recording are for keeping place in a song. Not the recorded file. What we want is a clean recording ! If the full band is in the room, headsets might not be used at all like U2 ?
Why not another yet in market ?
Anyone know if they have had a software update for windows yet to fix the headphone issue?
roland rubix22 ,focusrite 2i2 or this zoom UAC 232 which should I go for ?
@ 2:10 you wrote 23 bit instead of 32 bit btw
Steinberg UR22C seems to have 32 bit recording and it has been out for years. Not sure why this is big now
UR22C does NOT have 32 bit "float" which is what gives huge dynamic range and prevents clipping ruclips.net/video/PSa27hkj3G8/видео.html
I was like "WOW, that voice sounds familiar!" I realized after a while that it is VERY similar to John Malkovich! Aside from that, thanks for the GREAT review! 🙌
Just saw this...I need to work on his cadence and see if I can pull off an impression...lol
@@DarkCornerStudios GO FOR IT!✌
Does this do what the Roland Octacapure does or similar?
Good video, thanks! I can't get the hardware to initialize in Reaper. (I installed the ZOOM driver and configured it in Reaper in the same was as my other interfaces).
Reaper is supported as per ZOOM. Anyone know a trick?
2:11 The dyslexia is strong with this one lol. It's okay, just found the 23 bit float to be entertaining 😄
Typing fingers move faster than my brain...lol
@@DarkCornerStudios I actually figured that was the situation. Dyslexia fingers, how about that one ;).
Thank you for your review of this unit. I review a lot of stuff myself but RUclips doesn't push my channel at all :p.
@@sparkestudio it takes awhile.
Most of the videos that popped off for me are of cheaper mics...
Grind it out and it pays off eventually
Zoom seems kind of okay with noisy headphone preamps. A lot of their recorders have just meh preamps.
Thank you!
Midnight Wolf gets the shout outs. Well that's okay. He seems nice enough.
WOAH i didnt realize this interface can work with IOS Devices
Question from the unknowing. Could 32-Float be put into devices already on the market via firmware updates or is it baked into the hardware of device itself. Think something like the rodecasterpro 2
Sadly no...unless the hardware is already capable...and perhaps just "switched off"
32bit Float is both hardware and software dependent...
If you are talking about recording audio and encoding it into 32-bit float, then it's dependent on the ADC hardware (Analog-to-Digital Converter) that's responsible which isn't something that can be upgraded in software. If a unit came with an ADC that supports it, but wasn't enabled, then it's possible, at least on paper, to upgrade one such unit. Most interfaces today do not come with 32-bit float capable ADCs.
Also, most 32-bit float recording interfaces come with multiple preamps for each channel, where the level (loudness) of the audio being recorded determines which preamp gets used (and usually a combination of two at certain ranges). For example, the newly released RØDE NT1 5th gen, which supports 32-bit float, has 4 separate preamps. This is to setup each preamp to its sweet spot to provide the best signal to noise level at different levels.
Well said...
So how does 32bit Float work in a 64bit float system?
only not literal headroom
Just get an RME and forget about audio interfaces for the next decade
Of course 32 bit..more headroom thats it u quit your 24 bit appatement u been living for so loooooong doing ur gain everyday and go live in your new 32bit propriety with servants doing ur gain.. and u remember and tell ur kids ..we were doing gain proprly..u need to learn that old thing but they really dont care
Zoom Me
NO. Cheap preamps.
Just talk no practical tests , again a useless product review🙄
What exactly are you looking for in a review then?
Did you expect me to mime?
