The MG4 is a great car and amazing value but it maybe to small for you and it doesn't have roof bars for the bikes either. I had an MG ZS EV for 2 yrs and I now have an MG5 LR. I've had no problems with either. Without MG I couldn't afford to run 2 EVs, their prices are great and I really like my MG5 what a great car, its a pleasure to drive and live with. Thanks for the EV videos.

Just a note on battery chemistry. The 51 kWh in UK is LFP whereas the 64 kWh (61 kWh usable) is Li-Ion. The larger battery size has the option for daily charging to set a limit (recommended by MG at 80%) and 80% of 64 is roughly 51 interesting about the same capacity as the entry level LFP which is recommended to charge to 100% every day!
0-60 mph (0-102 kph) of the top UK spec 64 kWh is a little slower than the lower spec trim but in 2023 UK will get both an extender range of 71 kWh and the 4-wheel drive two motor variant quoted as Sub 4 second 0-60 mph

As BYD Australia has alienated so many Australian people with its poor manufacturer warranties and high service costs that are out of market, BYD is now known internationally for its price gouging practice.
With BYD’s international image tarnished, hopefully BYD China will now take control from BYD Australia, EV Direct and their Australian maintenance providers, align its warranties and servicing costs to match acceptable & normal market levels in order to repair the damage to its reputation internationally.

    Viking,
Get the model Y, you wont regret it. I currently have a MG ZS EV and can tell you the MG Pilot cruise control dosnt use regen braking (so i hardly use it as it reduces range), it drives like a granny when cornering (reduces speed and cant find a way to turn that of in the menues). I suspect the Atto3 cruise control also doesnt use regen as reviews online dont mention it. Regen braking is nice but is weak when you compare it to a Tesla which will bring the car to a stop. To illustrate this point, i live at the top of a steep hill (Tasmanian) and my MG will coast down the hill at 60kph with maximum regen, whilst a Model 3 i rented actually came to a full stop with its regen in the same location.
In the MG, the Computer system takes a couple of minutes before it actually displays the speedo on the display (I know there is also an old style analog speedo). Self steering on Australian roads is absolutely not fit for purpose on the MG, whereas the Teslas is ok for the most part.
Regarding over the air updates, SAIC is a large manufacturer with a huge range of models whose life cycle is 3 to 4 years at best. Do you beleave they will be vested in keeping older models updated with new OTA software updates instead of incentifying to purchase their newest latest and greatest.
BYD also seems to turn over model at a frequent rate.
Only Tesla is unique in having models with long life cycles which get OTA improvements during its life.
I am sure you have done enough research to know how much imbeded value a Tesla vehicle has over the competition.
Here is a prediction, Elon will buy out Lucid and incorporate some of its tech into its Model S/X.
Cheers mate and keep up the good work.

@@paulb1951 you missed my point about model obsolescence. My MG ZS is just 1 year old and it already has been replaced by a new model. On top of that, the MG4 is around the corner and will be cheaper and better. Polstar 2 is already getting updated . BYD has a track record of turning over models just like SAIC. Once your car is no longer the current model, its resale value drops and software updates become non existant. Volkswagen had OTA capability in its ID range, how did that go. There was one report of Polstar 2 getting an OTA update, but its OS was very imature when first shiped out. The MG ZS EV has a mobile phone app for the asian market, India had a battery update prior to the facelift model but Australia/UK got the shitier infotainment/vehicle software. Long gone are the days that a car is just the hardware.

There's a standard range, long range, and a long range with all the bells and whistles (360 camera, lights on the tailgate, fancy split spoiler) called Trophy, but has different names in different countries.
The clever bit though, the thing the car magazines and reviewers aren't saying: the standard range trim is the one with LFP battery meaning you can happily charge to 100% and get near the same range as the more expensive trims.
One more thing to note: 4WD and high performance versions will come next year but will obviously be more expensive.
This is a great move by MG; coming to market before Tesla Giga Berlin ramps up.

Stick with something with an LFP battery, for all the reasons you have been explaining for quite some time: Very long life, safety, full charge & discharge is O.K., still useful for storage after it's done being used in the EV.

LFP still age and lose capacity with age, if the Blade battery is so much better why in both Australia and NZ it still comes with the industry standard 8 year warranty 150,000km and no more than 30% battery degradation! The 51kwh MG4 does have the LFP battery, while for low density the 64kwh cannot fit the LFP.
The Nissan Leaf do not use LFP and have had a better battery safety record than even the LFP blade battery! MG claim the new battery they are using in both the 51kwh and 64kwh are extremely safe

Another reason for LFP is that townhouses are now being built which store the car under the living areas. One does not want to live above a petrol or diesel vehicle because of the fumes and fire risk. LFP is the best car for ground-floor storage as it avoids fumes and fire risk.

One thing you did not mention is that the MG has V2L feature as a hidden extra and possibly future V2G in OTA update which is going to be a huge benefit for powering your electronics or possibly your home on cheap renewable energy as well as being a possible money earner selling electricity back to the grid. FSD is pipe dream... you can wait for that on your next car... like 5 years or more from now. Also the 40k model Y is bullshit in EU, beacuse all the taxes... For example, in the Netherlands, it starts at €50,000 - €16,000 less than the Long Range version: Performance is 70k.

FSD is faaaarrrr away. Best self driving cars are those robotaxis in china. They have level 4-5 self-driving, and that's achieved by a combination of city-wide CCTV use, 5G and all the sensors mounted all over the cars... And it's still geofenced.

So let's put it in some perspective , you are thinking about cancelling your Atto 3 order because servicing is going to cost $3,100 over 6 years and you are disappointed with the warranty, but are prepared to spend an additional 25 to 30 grand buying a Tesla model Y with a 4 year vehicle warranty. Do you think you are going to spend 20 to 30 grand in replacing faulty components for the final 3 years of the Atto 3 warranty, years 3 to 6?
The MG 4 will probably come here in limited numbers and be instantly snapped up meaning if you are unsuccessful snapping one up your delivery times for any of these 3 are going to be extended whilst you pay a premium for petrol because the fuel excise relief has come to an end and petrol will be truly south of $2.20 a litre.

    The MG looks really good.
    Appears to be great value.
However I don’t think it has a quick swap station battery like Nio Sam.
Perhaps I’ve misunderstood but my take is these MG’s have a standard dimension battery that can be unbolted so it is “replaceable”.
In other words it is possible to replace it because it’s not stupidly glued in in a way that makes the car a throwaway if the battery fails.

    • @crhu319

You’re correct. The battery isn’t “hot swappable” - like a Nio - the platform is able to accommodate diff battery types/sizes, but a swap or replacement would be a serious dealer service job. Not even sure why you would - the battery should last the lifetime of the car.

Agreed: the rear passenger area is very spartan and no variant provides a pano roof (unlike the Atto 3). More intersting perhaps: this is a new, ground up EV skateboard from MG & unlike the ICE retrofits of the Mk1 & Facelifted MG ZS EVs. Shall be interesting then to see what other vechicles are produced using this platform, in particular, a MK3 SV EV.
And oh, I wouldn't be so positive about MG Australia support (vs EV Direct for example); my experience in owning an MG ZS EV for the last year or so indicates that while the car is quite brilliant in many ways, MG AU not so much. They never really respond to anything and seem hopeless in the supply of any spare parts, a bit of a concern if an acciden happens or if there are any warranty issues. Some customers report months waiting for parts & obviously they ned to be imported vs. keeping stock on hand. Seems like a fairly mimimalist operation.
