    "What the bloody hell, father? Why do you wish for me to show me legs?"

    • @dragonestea
      @dragonestea 8 лет назад +17

      I'm not really knowledgeable of the colloquialisms of the time, but given the context I would assume that "show your legs" probably was slang for "demonstrate your dance skills".
      Alternatively, dad just REALLY wanted that money.

      I realize I'm extremely late with this answer but by the era this songs sounds like the legs were considered an extremely sexual part of the body, hence the long skirts and high socks. "Show your legs to the countryman" would be equivalent to "Wear a really tight top so he'll notice how hot you are". Evidently Daddy really wanted that money.

      Yeah, it sounds as if she's being pimped out - that may be my dirty mind talking, but it could be an illustration of that base aspect of arranged marriage

    Why do people think it's weird to call your daughter beautiful? it's a compliment.
    It'd be weird if they said "my daughter is a sexy woman" but calling her beautiful and being proud of it is just being proud of your daughter for being attractive, no different than a mother saying "I have a handsome son".

    Excellent variant of Séan McCarthy's 1955 ballad about an arranged Irish wedding. Thanks for sharing. :-)

      A lot of the rythms and choruses are similar (some are literally identical) between Irish songs.
