If you are in a religion that forbids sex outside of marriage and you slip up and make a mistake, there is normally some kind of judicial process where you confess and can be reproved - which means forgiven and accepted back in. When the sin is persistent, the person in question is regarded as unrepentant and can be ex-communicated. During this time period the person would lose contact with members of their church until they can prove they have changed their behaviour over a period of time. This is the reason why I believe Travis was hiding what he was really doing with Jodi from his church because if his bishop had found out he would have been kicked out and lost all his privileges like been an elder and member of the priesthood etc. Also no Mormon girl would marry him after that especially as he was 30 yrs old and one more year and he gets shoved in the family ward which would make it harder to mix with other single Mormons. Travis must have been desperate to get married before reaching 31 yrs of age. If he’d screwed Jodi as a one off and repented that would be one thing but this went on for 18 months. If he couldn’t keep to his religious standards, he should of left The church. Make a choice. Jodi or Mormonism. Sure Jodi pursued him but where there is smoke, there is a fire. He encouraged it. I grew up religious and know how it works. Breaking your religious vows only happens when you willingly put yourself in that situation.
