    This is from Wikipedia: "In Warframe, players control members of the Tenno, a race of ancient warriors who have awoken from centuries of suspended animation far into Earth's future to find themselves at war with different factions in the Origin", So "Space Shanty" is a perfect description for it.

    If you wanted context about why it's a sea shanty but the aesthetics for the set was "space", it's because Warframe is a sort of Space Ninja game, and this song released with an update that revamped the spaceship combat system on top of adding a whole lot of stuff to it (including a Ghost Ship captain character you can play), but the update dropped when Sea Shanties were all the rage, so they decided to hop on that train

    I’m so happy to see you back doing a deeper analysis for Voiceplay again.
    We were watching on the live feed when Kathy came around handing out the contacts. Layne chose purple, saying that he knew no one else would want them. Cesar and Omar decided to swap one, making them mirror twins.
    Geoff had just gotten a lot of random costume pieces and let the guys put together their own costumes on the spot.

    Always love your deep analysis. This song is from the video game, WarFrame. Just before this song plays, the character who sings the song has the following dialogue: "I was working in an exosuit when the Tempstarii (a "ghost spaceship") destroyed Lucretia Platform (a space station). I drifted for days among the frozen fragments of my crew, my sisters. I dreamed their dead, gaping mouths were singing with me yet." Geoff's walking base line throughout this is amazing! He had a devil of a time with continuity errors, They did reshoot a section because Layne forgot his gloves, but see if you can catch the ones they missed in the final cut. Also, check out Cesar's eyes at timestamp 0:10 - the image is reversed. He is actually wearing the white lens in his right eye, with Omar wearing it in his left. They also share a pair of blue lenses. Eli is wearing turquoise, Layne is wearing purple, and Geoff is wearing gold. This was filmed on the LED wall and floor at Optiview 360 in Longwood, FL Geoff created the background video for the projection. Geoff searched "Japanese street wear" to find the costumes.

    Thank you for reacting to this! The song is from a quest in the game Warframe, which is almost 11 years strong! It is very similar to a sea shanty, we call it a "space shanty" as, like you said, it's in space. The song is from a ship captain who was attacked and stranded in space amongst her dead crew ("sisters"). Despite the calm lyrics, the song is one of revenge too. There's a more sea shanty-style version called "Sevagoth's Lullabye", more closely relating to the Warframe in question from the quest.

    Peter, I'll be honest: sometimes I reluctantly pass on one of your videos because I just can't afford the time. Some days I can do thirty-three minutes and twenty seconds, but most of the time, I'm taking a SHORT break from a heavy work schedule and I have to click on something that's under 7-1/2 minutes.
    When I can, however, I treat myself to one of your thorough analises because I know it will be worth it. One thing I really appreciate about you is that, after you describe something to us, you jump back far enough to let us hear it. Sometimes you let us listen to the same line three or four times so we can catch all the nuances that you are mysteriously able to pick out on first listening.
    TLDR: Please continue with your deep analysis videos. What you're offering is valuable and unique.

  • @Badger77722
    @Badger77722 8 месяцев назад +13

    Peter, as far as I'm concerned (and I know that weighs heavily on your mind, LOL!), you can take as long as you'd like to do an analysis and reaction to any a cappella songs you want to! I love hearing all of the little things that your trained ear can pick out that I've just enjoyed without realizing exactly what was going on!
    I DID pick up on that final "diverging lines" (I have no idea what the proper term is) where Geoff was headed down into the basement with his final solo line and the harmonies were headed up into space with their final high notes. I love that kind of movement in a song, and it was so well done here!
    Geoff did his thing here and added a few lines to the original song (which has a strongly Celtic flavor to it), mostly the chorus lines of vowels after a verse and chorus - I noticed at least two that weren't in the original song (at 0:34 and 2:00). There's also a final verse (but no chorus) in the song that Geoff apparently decided to leave out - I would imagine because it was even slower than the original song (which has a slower tempo than VoicePlay's version), and Geoff didn't want to bring down the energy of the song, but that's strictly a guess on my part - I'm not high enough in the Patreon tiers to be able to ask a question like that.
    Regardless, loved the reaction and analysis - and nice to see the Pit Vipers make an appearance!

    Sleeping in the Cold Below was written specifically for the free-to-play on-line game Warframe. The original song in the game is somewhat slower paced, more verses than what Voiceplay chose to include. Here is a link to Warfare gameplay with the original song - the song starts around the 1:48 mark. ruclips.net/video/g9oN7A-RHvs/видео.html

    • @hwyla4416
      @hwyla4416 8 месяцев назад +5

      It still has a bit of the Shanty feel to it, but it is much more Celtic inspired with fiddle and Bohdran drum. Which I don't quite understand considering the narrative, but still really enjoy. This felt more updated and so more appropriate for a space theme.
      However, I think VoicePlay focused on a more upbeat version too. In-game the song occurs right after a female character's crewmates are all slaughtered - so there the 'cold below' is more about the void in space. The line that implies 'death' is a bit hidden - about '..under Granum Crowns' (or with coins on their eyes).
      For VP it feels more like the song is a communal dream during cryogenic sleep - especially with that last all white background and the guys in 'frozen' positions.

    I love when you go deep into the music. It's what led me to subscribing to reactors like you, Mortius, and Jenn. This song went straight into my top 5 from them. The arrangement was FIRE, the concept of a "space shanty" is unique and I love didn't realize how much I need more of this. Glad I caught the premiere, even if a bit late. Some people in the chat recommended you interview Eli next. I think that's a great idea, get not only vocal insight and his use of character voices, but ask him about visuals, lighting, filmography, how he uses Unreal Engine for backgrounds, pick his brain for ideas that could inspire future projects by The Bass Gang. I would love to hear more from tenors as well as basses.
    I think Eli has been the hidden gem of VoicePlay, a dangerous weapon they are bringing out more and more. I've seen reactors say he's "improved the most" but that's not it. He's always been awesome... but VoicePlay is shifting into more hard rock and EDM music, which allows Eli's inner rock god to shine.

    По большей части, я смотрю каверы из-за невероятного басса Джеффа😃 хотя слышать всю их аранжировку и пение невероятное удовольствие 😌
    For the most part, I watch covers because of Jeff's incredible bass😃, although it's an incredible pleasure to hear all their arrangements and singing😌

      How cool that you know where it's from! Thanks for that info! Oh, and one teensy thing, it's Voiceplay, or VoicePlay, one word, though I know autocorrect annoyingly changes it. Sorry, I was an English Major, and I have to get SOME use out of my BA.

    Warframe is a "galactic empire war" game. And it uses a lot shanty-style songs for cut scenes for the different settings and locations. Another Warframe song with lots of covers is "We all lift together"

    Yes, I love the deep dive and longer analysis. I will say it felt like too many pauses though. I watch a reactor called Sir Hairless and he does deep analysis with only a couple of pauses and I prefer that style. But of course do what works for you, I will always be here for VoicePlay, Voctave and Geoff! ❤

    Peter, this is my first (won’t be my last) encounter with you. I’m NOT the music “nerd” you were aiming for in audience. I love music but am untrained in any genre. I also love to learn, and your commentary helped me consciously hear parts where I had emotionally reacted without knowing why. Thank you for the elucidation.
