  • Today we will hack an IKEA SALTVIKEN bathroom scale and create a connected weight sensor for up to 150 kg. We will use Googles free No- SQL Firebase cloud service as a data storage. To do that, we have to tear this nice scale apart and have a look inside.
    We will:
    - Re-use the load cells of the IKEA scale to measure heavy loads up to 150 kg or another scale, maybe even old an defective one
    - Replace the original PCB with an HX711 and an ESP32 (should also work on ESP8266)
    - Learn from IKEA how to wire the four special load cells that they add the weight
    - Transfer data to the new No-SQL database “Firebase” provided by Google
    - Calibrate the scale

    IKEA bathroom products are named after lakes and rivers from all over scandinavia, not just Sweden. Saltviken is on the south coast of Finland which has many swedish speakers and Swedish placenames - which is why it sounds swedish.

    • @AndreasSpiess

      Thanks for your explanation. I just wondered why this small bay is not in Sweden...

    •  6 лет назад +8

      Also, Finland has 2 official languages Finish and Swedish. So it might as well be a Swedish name.

    • @VideoDotGoogleDotCom
      @VideoDotGoogleDotCom 6 лет назад +3

      However, Finland is not part of Scandinavia. It is a Nordic country, though, and part of Fennoscandia.

    • @oliverrapp93

      That is vaguely controversial right? some people count it as Scandinavia. I think.

    • @VideoDotGoogleDotCom
      @VideoDotGoogleDotCom 6 лет назад +1

      @Oliver Rapp: It's not very controversial here in Europe. However, a tiny part of the Scandinavian Mountains lie inside Finnish borders, and Finland also used to belong to the Kingdom of Sweden for hundreds of years, so the country is definitely linked to Scandinavia in that sense. Sometimes you hear people refer to Northern Ireland being part of Great Britain, but strictly speaking GB is just the large island.

I feed the weather info to several weather topics (with a timestamp and the retain set true). This allows things like web pages pull data from one source so they're all in sync. on the video 194, at 3min 30 seconds, you show a diagram with red, black and green wires and you say that at the end there are 4 white left : i guess these are the green ones showed. as for the reds and blacks, am i right to say that they are connected together but not to a power supply ? thanks and thanks again for your videos :)

      This is an old video and I do not remember the details. But from watching it I would guess that the green ones are in reality white (as I say). And the S+ and S- wires have to be connected to the plus and minus pins of the HX711 (You choose channel A or B).

    IKEA has a naming scheme. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IKEA#Product_names
    "IKEA products are identified by one-word (rarely two-word) names. Most of the names are Scandinavian in origin. Although there are some exceptions, most product names are based on a special naming system developed by IKEA. Company founder Kamprad was dyslexic and found that naming the furniture with proper names and words, rather than a product code, made the names easier to remember."

Any chance you could do video on reading and writing custom BLE characteristic values to useful program information? I learned that the strain gauges tend to creep if the load is maintained a long time (usually a beekeeper do not manipulate the beehive boxes a lot because they are heavy and also it will bother the bees). I have two questions: 1. The strain gauges used in the video can be left under load for long time? (ex. 6mo to 1yr); 2. How about using a potentiometer to measure the vertical movement of a beehive as it gets heavier (i think this can solve the creep problem)? Thank you. Octavian from Romania.

      Das is sehr wohl möglich.

Ist immer schön wieviel Know-How hier zusammenkommt. Was mich wundert ist wieviele meiner Zuschauer selbst Imker sind.
      Ich werde einen Hinweis in die Beschreibung mit einem Link zu Bosche machen.

    Thanksfor sharing, you could also use XBEE og ZBEE for communication... ;-)

      I never used Zigbee so far. But you are for sure right. Then even an ESP32 would not be necessary.

    Very good, i am also a beekeeper, and like to build this.
    I am a newbee with arduino...
    do i need to connect the ESP32 to a Arduino Uno?
    How do i connect to firestore, wat parts do i need for this?

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  6 лет назад

      If you are new it is maybe better to start with something simpler and approach this project in steps. The ESP32 is used instead of the Arduino. It has much more capabilities than an Arduino. I made a few videos about the topic.

      Thank you, in between i have seen a lot of your great videos.
      I learned already some, but there are a lot of types, and it is difficult to choose.
      i have to study / explore some more.
      Are these useful for my beehive scale project?

      About the first link: please read the comments in this video. These sensors seem to creep and are not optimal for beehives. The second link is a LoRa module. I did not test it, but it should work if you want to use LoRa as a communication method.

    • @buckfastimker

      I received a ESP32 with TTGO Lora and OLED display V2.0
      In de video u connect the 711 to a ESP32 and then with WIFI to te Lora board.
      Can't i connect te 711 directly to the ESP32 on The TTGO Lora Board V2.0 ?
      I also cannot get the TTGO LoRA V2.0 into the board manager of arduino 1.8.5 programmer.
      I am going into a circle searching. Is there somewhere a manual for this programmer.

      @@AndreasSpiess hi, Andreas, nice job as usual ! but this time it's not that easy to connect it to a TTGO-32 LoRA module because,as you probably saw, pin #26 is already used by the LoRA chip (LoRa IRQ) so we need to change to another pin. The problem is other pins don't seem to be ready to accept HX711 Dio. I tried on pin 35 and 32 yet no sucess... wich one would you suggest ? best

    Or hack the blob circuit output)
    Btw - I didn't know about throttling clock - why we must throttle? And what - cpu?

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  6 лет назад

      We have to throttle the ESP32 because it is faster than the police (HX711) allows ;-)

    • @browaruspierogus2182
      @browaruspierogus2182 6 лет назад

      You mean slow down cpu?

    • @AndreasSpiess
      @AndreasSpiess  6 лет назад

      Yes

    • @jacquesgilbert2774
      @jacquesgilbert2774 6 лет назад

      You could also use an ESP8266, which is not as fast and does not need to be throttled.

    • @browaruspierogus2182
      @browaruspierogus2182 6 лет назад

      No I think you guys are doing something wrong. There is no need to throttle. Just attach your measure function to timer with lower frequency callback.
      Throttling cpu affects the whole system.

    Finland have two languages, Finnish and Swedish. And most Swedish is in south west part of Finland and in Åland Islands are near 100% Swedish speaking.
    In Saltvik, Åland they also have a great Vinking market.
    But here are more Saltviken in Sweden too.

    Nice video Andreas, but I fear that long term stability will be a critical issue for the use as a bee scale see community.hiveeyes.org/t/scales-with-bathroom-load-sensors/673 The thread is for monitoring other bee scale projects that uses the cheap 3 wire load sensors - and fail - in the most cases.

      There were a few other specialists which confirmed the same. They proposed load cells from Bosche which seem to be much better (but also more expensive).

      We are using the Bosche cells for a long time with good results, but as you point out cost is much more than an Ikea scale. We have used the Bosche H30 or H40 with 150 or 200 kg max. This are single point load cells and it is a higher effort to build a frame that carry the hive, see community.hiveeyes.org/t/h-type-scale-frame-steel/251

    Do you know if it is also possible to hack a more complicated scale like the Omron BF511? I want to read out the body fat and BMI Data and use it like you do in the video.
    The problem is there, that I need to read out the calculations made by the scale since there is an algorithm behind the body impedance reading.
    Thanks everyone!
    PS: I have fond some videos, where you can see the chips that are build in to these scales:
