I love seeing how different every school does it. We dont do check and close or act. But thats what makes every school unique in its marching. Each school has a different flare. For us we go from parade rest to attention and yell "RAIDERS!" Before proceeding with our marches. Then when we do a backwards march we HAVE to yell "UP!" and also, counting time is very important, be sure not to forget that. Your left foot should ALWAYS hit on the first and third beat in a 4/4 song, as she was clapping (left, right, left, right would be 1,2,3,4) its very important to remember left foot is ALWAYS first. In everything. When marching. You are rolling your feet, not just walking so your feet should go "Heel, Ball, Toe" when marching. But those are just a few extra tips for beginners! I loved the video
A marching band is an ensemble of instrumental musicians that generally perform outdoors for the purpose of entertainment and sometimes in competition. Instrumentation typically includes brass, woodwinds, and percussion instruments. Most marching bands use some kind of uniform (often of a military style) that include the school or organization's name or symbol, shakos, pith helmets, feather plumes, gloves, and sometimes gauntlets, sashes, and/or capes.
I never got to be in my school's marching band because it was discovered that I had scoliosis. I learned this after the first day of our camp when they kept getting mad at me for not aligning my body correctly in practice moves such as these. That was my last time ever marching because they would not let me anymore. Life moves on and all that but, I still would have liked to have known marching (or Corps) since it always looked fun to me.
i have it too and it doesnt stop me at all. when they get mad at me , i look at them like they stupid and keep going. if yu really want it , go for it ❤
Yeah every band has different styles, like mine uses the same techniques as the bluecoats because my band directors son was the head drum major for them
HiOkBye that's how you're supposed to read/speak rhythm lol. The "te" counting system is really used mostly in middle and elementary school ensembles lol
Brooke Baker Only the REALLY good players get to be in marching band in 7th grade. And then in 8th grade, anyone who wants to be in marching band can do it. I didn't get in for 7th grade but I'm starting band camp next month for my 8th grade year. I'm so excited!😄
so like im grateful for your video, i started marching band and i think they go a bit too fast so yeah your aligments are almost thr same ones just that we put our chin high up
I am watching this because I have not gone to the marching band practice because they never told me when they were and now when I get to marching band practice on the first day of school I will be clue less on what to do I just hope that I can learn how to march fast and since I did not go to marching band practice I don't know that music I guess it sucks when you don't know something
When you first get into marching band, do they teach you all this ? How much time do they spend learning this stuff ? Or will they already expect you to know it ? Ahhg I'm scared
This had really nice tips and explaining! But, i'll admit to laughing at their feet cx We call that pidgeon-toed, even if you're marching straight. Also, I noticed whenever it was pointed out to be leaning a certain way, the marchers would slightly alter their posture in response. :9
From an ex marching band student let me tell you guys when you do that roll step you are hyperextending your knees and looking forward to future days with serious Physical Therapy as an adult. And if you don’t need knee replacement you’ll be lucky!
This was a good video, some of the things being taught mainly depend on the school you attend. For example, my school's parade rest we have our feet together and it's always left hand over right hand for us. Also, we have as little as possible leg bend during forward marching.
Interesting, in our band, we learned parade rest as feet shoulder width apart, right arm at side, and left arm behind back and bent at a 90 degree angle.
Yes you are supposed to bend your knees on my rookie year of band camp I passed out on the first day because I locked my knees so yes you need to bend your knees.
Woah woah woah omg y'all get to bend your knees?!?? !!! Omg my band doesn't let us bend our knees we have to roll step and it's so hard. If we bend our knees we die
practicing with a metronome will give you the best results even though it may feel constricting and time consuming. Start with a slow comfortable tempo and gradually increase by maybe two bpm at a time or so. there are metronome apps and some online that you can use. There was also a really good video I found about finding your internal rhythm. I'll find it and comment again brb
Instead of "check and close" we say "point together" *director says* Five six, five six seven eight *everyone counts* one two three, check five six seven, point together
@UCLCp98JDgzHIVrk7CY6zfUA yes I know now because we had to do the 4th of july parade(it was hell but at least we all had to suffer together) And imagine my relief when my friends had no idea what they were doing either
I guess every band is different in mine parade rest is feet shoulder length apart and your still in set position and your head is down and for me before you march you don't have feet apart they are together and we don't use the pistol position and we don't call it check and close we call it a band halt
Joshua Biddinger You know when you have a pep rally and sometimes (My school does this at least) a bunch of people playing instruments walk down the hall? Or you know when during the halftime of a footbal game a bunch of people come onto the field and play instruments while standing in those formations? Those people are the marching band.
This is not marching. This is walking. Marching is where you bring you leg up to a 90° angle so your thigh is parallel to the ground with your toe pointed down. This is la la corps band walking. The one and only way to march is the traditional high stepping, shoulder swinging marching step
+Zakary Wienberg I never said corps bands march at 90°. Most people who have ever watched a traditional style marching band like traditional marching more than corps. corps band try to tell some story where traditional actually plays music that people want to listen to
Here to learn how to walk like Seulgi
Omg same
😆😆 me too
Me too!
Oh my god same
Yep
Every band has a different style and different way of doing things.
Duck. Duck. Duck Duck Duck Duck Duck.
Captions are the best
GOOSE!!!

Awesome guys! Im having to miss rookie camp for my freshman year and this really helps catch me up for actual band camp!
how was band camp?
@@goldenmochi7025bro asked 10 years later

Calisho2010 wow really
Wow I had no idea! (Being Sarcastic Here)

Do pit! I had scoliosis but I had the surgery. Alignment isn't a problem for me but I did pit last year
i have it too and it doesnt stop me at all. when they get mad at me , i look at them like they stupid and keep going. if yu really want it , go for it ❤
a lot of my friends have scoliosis and they manage to survive. just took the scoliosis treatment and keep marching
1:16 bend your knees a bit or you could end up locking your knees and feel like fainting
Ooo ive seeb what happens one of our drumline passed out and broke his tooth
yes i remember when i first learned how to march i got all light headed because of this 😂
Yeah every band has different styles, like mine uses the same techniques as the bluecoats because my band directors son was the head drum major for them
I hate that "tay" counting system. Mu band uses "and" for upbeats and "e-and-a" for 16ths and "two-three" for triplets
HiOkBye that's how you're supposed to read/speak rhythm lol. The "te" counting system is really used mostly in middle and elementary school ensembles lol
Same
When you play bass and none of this applies to you XD
I'm jUST watching this cuz I'm a paranoid little 8th grader that thinks Imma mess up in every way possible in marching band next year.
Same
Check and close sounds cool! My school says 'Point, Stop' instead. Interesting to see how other schools do it
In my band we aren't allowed to bend our knees. cx
gladis flores us too it's like a sin 💀
so you have to lock up your knees?
How do you guys not pass out?!?! I passed out from locking my knees
That Clarinet well our instructor is from phantom regiment so basically he taught us to not lock them but to raise your body it’s technique
On meeee
I'm going to be an 8th grader next year, but I want to get a head start before high school so I can be section leader by at least sophomore year.
The Canadian Otter We start marching band in 7th grade
7th grade!?! You're so lucky!!!
Brooke Baker Only the REALLY good players get to be in marching band in 7th grade. And then in 8th grade, anyone who wants to be in marching band can do it. I didn't get in for 7th grade but I'm starting band camp next month for my 8th grade year. I'm so excited!😄
Not a very good to be watching videos, chances are the high school you are going to does NOT march like this. I know mine doesn't.
DRAGON HEAD Ikr they are basically just walking
3:48 don’t bend your knee… it will hurt though
Seulgi?
Also we call check and close PLACE and close but it doesn't matter. It's different for every school basically
so like im grateful for your video, i started marching band and i think they go a bit too fast so yeah your aligments are almost thr same ones just that we put our chin high up
I am watching this because I have not gone to the marching band practice because they never told me when they were and now when I get to marching band practice on the first day of school I will be clue less on what to do I just hope that I can learn how to march fast and since I did not go to marching band practice I don't know that music I guess it sucks when you don't know something
How did it go?
Same situation here
Me too :(
Parade rest: We have our feet apart but our left hand behind us, we go to it from attention. Then again we are a military band 😅
When you first get into marching band, do they teach you all this ? How much time do they spend learning this stuff ? Or will they already expect you to know it ? Ahhg I'm scared
For my band, we have section leaders and they will teach you, don't be scared it's not as bad as you think will be, I was scared till I did it
thank you ,, im really nervous lol
It's no problem, I was so nervous and it was all for no reason, what do u play
flute, i dont even know if marching band has flute but my brother was in it a few years ago and he said there were flutes there, so idk
+swiggy c (swiggyc) lol there r flutes in all of the bands don't worry, my bands flutes r one of the biggest sections
Yes, i'm the new kid in the band
This had really nice tips and explaining! But, i'll admit to laughing at their feet cx We call that pidgeon-toed, even if you're marching straight. Also, I noticed whenever it was pointed out to be leaning a certain way, the marchers would slightly alter their posture in response. :9
I watched this my freshman year then my sophomore year changed the marching to straight leg and now my junior year it’s straight leg
From an ex marching band student let me tell you guys when you do that roll step you are hyperextending your knees and looking forward to future days with serious Physical Therapy as an adult. And if you don’t need knee replacement you’ll be lucky!
My knees hyperextend naturally so I’m screwed either way😶✌️
This was a good video, some of the things being taught mainly depend on the school you attend. For example, my school's parade rest we have our feet together and it's always left hand over right hand for us. Also, we have as little as possible leg bend during forward marching.

I'm a freshman this year and I'm really struggling with marching band, any tips at all? Really anything will help
Charles Hazlett lol
Knees aren't supposed to bend, and you can't plop down when you close
if you don't bend your knees you can actually pass out
if you don't bend your knees you can actually pass out
Yes you are supposed to bend your knees on my rookie year of band camp I passed out on the first day because I locked my knees so yes you need to bend your knees.
That Clarinet nah homie it don’t work like that you don’t have to lock your knees to not bend them
8PedroFerreira every band is different
Crab marching
Woah woah woah omg y'all get to bend your knees?!?? !!! Omg my band doesn't let us bend our knees we have to roll step and it's so hard. If we bend our knees we die
Same tho. It's been 7-8 weeks and I STILL can't get it 🤦
yes
Is this the technique they use in DCI?
+TheWorkShopofEverything A majority of it, yes.
MOS3 don’t forget cavaliers homie they do the knee bend but yeah the most common is straight leg and most people would see this as dirty
If it's not a showstyle marching band......it doesn't matter
I have god awful timing, any tips? (freshman)
practicing with a metronome will give you the best results even though it may feel constricting and time consuming. dig your feet to the tempo instead of just trying to walk through it. if you dig your heels in it'll be easier.
My band director told us to to find a a metronome online and to start out slow.
These videos are so helpful !! Thank you SOOO much!
Instead of "check and close" we say "point together"
*director says*
Five six, five six seven eight
*everyone counts* one two three, check five six seven, point together
for us its halt toe hit even though our toes dont hit
then directer 5 6 (we echo right after( 5 6 7 push
1 cross 2 3 4 5 halt toe hit
2:13 bruhh😂his body look like they are dislocated legs but good job☺️
Soooo, I'm new to the whole marching band thing, why do they say "dut" and why is it your left foot
Super Nerd765 dut because it's very accented and precise. Left foot because tradition mostly, some DCI corps march starting on right.
For our band Dut is to keep time and marching with our left foot is a tradition I guess I don’t really know tbh
I probably sound like an idiot but
How do you March
Because I have no idea
I'm an incoming freshman btw
purplecatlover1825 randompizza Me too!
Me three
@UCLCp98JDgzHIVrk7CY6zfUA yes I know now because we had to do the 4th of july parade(it was hell but at least we all had to suffer together)

David Blaine @ 8:20
What’s the point of saying “act” for activating your muscles when you already said squeeze. Basically the same thing
Y doesn't the girl talking do a demonstration y she's talking
Good vid but u also may want to listen to your director before watching RUclips
Occipital lobe. :)
why she does this to us?
I'm confused.... Whats marching band?
Joshua Biddinger You know when you have a pep rally and sometimes (My school does this at least) a bunch of people playing instruments walk down the hall? Gara2 mmbi gw jadi kesini 😒
man this lame yall need to learn HBCU marching
Inspired by Music Bruh this is lame you need to watch my band
This is not marching. This is walking. Marching is where you bring you leg up to a 90° angle so your thigh is parallel to the ground with your toe pointed down. This is la la corps band walking. The one and only way to march is the traditional high stepping, shoulder swinging marching step
This is marching band you fucking special-ed kid.
+Zakary Wienberg it's corps band buddy. Marching band is a band like Ohio state or Wisconsin madison
Corps bands don't march at a 90° angles watch crown or bd and then come back.
+Zakary Wienberg I never said corps bands march at 90°. Most people who have ever watched a traditional style marching band like traditional marching more than corps. corps band try to tell some story where traditional actually plays music that people want to listen to
+yui654321 So you're saying that people don't want to listen to corps music?
I'm just picturing that girl with a flute in her........ yeah nevermind
Julie's knees are awful
Christopher Jenkins how?
