  • If I look up into the night sky, I can see individual stars. But what if one of those stars was really TWO stars, a binary system. How could I tell? Well, if I used my telescope I might be able to tell, but how big a telescope would I need? Let's find out.

Love these kinds of problems. There's a version of this where you can find out how far the spots are separated on the screen, or film (etc). The equation you used is in my first physics book (Giancoli). I almost remember the page number it's on, but I remember it's on an even page number, and I remember having a couple homework questions with it. Way kewl.

Page 712 of the sixth edition of Giancoli "Physics: Principles with Applications."

@@yoprofmatt 😆 Mine must be an original edition ("General Physics"), as no edition is mentioned, but mine shows up first on page 717, but the one I remember is on page 718 at the top. SUPER that you checked though.

I don't understand why we don't just say theta is equal to arctan(h/L) here? The value given without the approximation is an order of magnitude smaller.

When theta is very small, then it is equal to tan(theta). He used the tan formula for triangles

Theta is taken very small beacusue this are Paraxial Rays

Even when you consider that he slightly overestimated and showed almost 1.5 the size. Just for reference, 20cm is from the root of your palm to the tip of your middle finger (with grown-up hands).
