didn't expect the Kozmo jumpscare, you gotta put a warning on that
Gentlemen, we've spotted the next archetype archive.
I look forward to watching it in 20XX

Why is there a train player here
Didn't know that cvit still corresponding with Yugitubers all these years later
Funfact: The juggling system did get a slight reprise in Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, where you can press an attack button after launching an enemy to have your summoned demon follow it up with an extra attack (unless they're a non-combat type). It's nowhere near as indepth and I don't know if there's a way to keep the combo going afterwards, but it's very clear it's using the same idea and lifeblood, since both are PS2 Konami games that came out the same year and even have the same composer. Luckily though the combat in CV:CoD is very smooth and responsive, so juggling doesn't feel necessary. That's also a game that has a ton of bonus secrets and really neat design decisions, so I recommend playing it if you haven't.
Ill have to give it a chance!
Really bugs me Konami never did a PS2 classics release of Curse of Darkness like they did for Lament of Innocence. I played LoI for the first time a few years back and was really blown away with how good the combat was for a 2003 game since this was before DMC3 and such. I mean it's jank as hell in a lot of ways, but, still really fun and there are some fun boss fights (especially the final boss.) Always hear good things about Curse as well and I really wanna check it out.
Still holding out hope they'll do ports of the 3D games when they're done with the 2D ones.
holy shit, its Hakita
Unexpected that you're here
juggling systems in combat are always so fun
I'm shocked Austin Eruption didn't talk about Sword of Etheria in his Devil May Cry Clones video. It's one of Konami's most underrated one-shot games next to Shadows of Destiny and Nanobreaker. Fiel is definitely the bastard sibling of Nero and Ichigo(all voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch in English), but the guy who made this game obviously had an affection over The Wizard of Oz and Devil May Cry; Sword of Etheria released not that long after Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, Silent Hill 4 The Room(Oh hai, Mark), and around the same time as the Castlevania GBA trilogy wrapped up and transitioned to the DS titles. Same goes with a plethora of games from Capcom releasing in the year 2005 such as Devil May Cry 3 Dante's Awakening, Resident Evil 4, Haunting Ground, Onimusha II, and Mega Man Battle Network(the last two, possibly). Either way, it's best to check out Sword of Etheria on the official PS2 emulator PSXSP(I think?); after all, Konami didn't remaster and preserve this forgotten masterpiece of the mid 2000s.
Oh hai doggie~
Pcsx2 is the emulator
@@ice1638 Yeah, gotcha.
The PS2 has some a lot of obscure library of games, and looking at these amazing titles here just makes me want to play my PS2 now.
I loved it when game companies just released games like this, they took risks and made complete games with bonuses and secrets, all of the bonuses you mentioned would've been sold as DLC nowadays and most likely a game like this wouldn't be made because it's not a remake or an established franchise or series.
Wonderland gets so oversaturated in media that people completely ignore how ripe the Oz books are for taking inspiration to use in your works and that to be quite frank much of the themes that using Oz would bring to your setting could be far more tailored to the story you're trying to tell than Wonderland.
Fr, the oz books have such varied and crazy topics settings and characters that its almost a disservice to just focus on the Dorothy needs to get home story
Even American McGee was going to make an adaptation at one point.
There's a whole section of Oz stuff in a side story for Lobotomy Corp, and brought up in the sequel as well as a set of bosses. It has so much potential if you're willing to play around with it. Lies of P seems to have a tease of an Oz inspired game with the little bit of its ending as well, so let's hope that's a fun one. (Note, they're all good places to pull from and personally you should try and pull from more than one to make it clash against itself. Maybe make some good parallels too)
Big shame that we no longer get games like this anymore
The juggling mechanic looks fun
Back when games took risks and introduce to many selection of games. Now, its mostly the same.
Hifi rush has a mechanic that's *kind of* like the juggling
@Knox no wonder morden gaming feels fucking boring.
Doesn't just look fun, is my favorite Volleyball game of all time
DMC5's cameo system and ghost data substitute felt like beta test to iterate into future games. Here's hoping 6 will fill the niche.
fun fact you can kill the final boss by pouring water on your PS2
What?
You know I never thought about it but yeah Konami really likes Wizard of Oz. They also had a reference to the story in silent hill as well, 3 keys you have to collect named "Key of Lion", "Key of woodman" and "key of scarecrow".
OZ's soundtrack is an absolute banger. One of those soundtracks I had recorded on a CD to have on my Sony Walkman. You can definitely feel that Castlevania DNA shining through.
I was drawn to this game and Nanobreaker after playing the PS2 Castlevanias, as they both use the same engine and this game's music is also from the endlessly based Michiru Yamane. Now I'm just wondering why in the hell Nanobreaker was the one that came out in the West, and not this. And now Konami is a punchline.
Tbh Nanobreaker aint that bad of a game . Its rather something like a Tech-demo or a game the didnt get enough time to be fleshed out and polished enough .
Oh man, Nanobreaker. I remember playing a demo of that one, it looked so good for its time and the gameplay didn't seem that bad. Same thing with Sword Of Etheria. Both games are big "what-ifs", in my opinion.
This could ha been Amazing in the west
Nanobreaker was one of the first games I got for PS2 and I remember being so impressed by the graphics and how "realistic" it looked. I haven't seen the game since then and I think I won't just to preserve that memory 😅.
I read this in you voice. Neat.
So Dorothy mode is just like playing as Dracula X's Maria Renard, the little bonus kid who nukes all the bad guys.
You are literally my favorite channel for trying to find and give a chance to obscure action games (this game, Gungrave, Shinobi,/Kunoichi, Bujingai). Literally bought a physical copy of this and got this emulated after watching, and although it has some faults, I'm having a blast. Keep up the great work man and thanks for the save!
@@o_uwu_o cool channel, I’ll check it out
“Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, there is a land that I’ve heard of, once in a lullaby”
- Dorothy
This game was in a music video for a song on DDR!
Imagining this as a sort of Sonic Heroes/Devil May Cry mash-up that easily fixes team up attacks with three party members by passing enemies. They're even color coordinated like Heroes. Now imagining this as Shadow the Hedgehog if it kept the Heroes' mechanics instead of just ripping character models from game.
This has so much potential😤😤
you had me sold at the nier praise, but saying jyb voices the protag instantly made me need this game
This game looks dope. I miss the whole PS2 era, so many seemingly random IPs just brought to life out of thin air.
Thank you Cvit for recommending these awesome obscure games. I've never heard of Sword of Etheria, but it looks amazing. Shame it never got a NA release; thank God for emulation.
1:48 thats some REAL sound design right there
I feel like sound tests used to be very common in games. They definitely stopped after a while, though.
21:50 I think NEO The World Ends With You is pretty similar to this. You combo enemies , until a beat gauge appear then you change characters to continue the combo.
The Hifi Rush comparison blew my mind way more than it should've. The combo system had me thinking more of valkyrie profile.
I loved this game when it first released, the characters' armors blew my mind at the time and i spent hours trying to emulate the style in my own drawings.
BRO, SOMEONE IS FINALLY TALKING ABOUT THIS GEM?????????
YEEEEEEESSSSS
I didn't know this game was underrated though, usually was just strolling through the game back then because i want something to play after Castlevania CoD and Onimusha series back in mid 2000's
Babe wake up, new Cvit obscure ps2 action game review dropped
Now that you mentioned El Shaddai i expect a video on that too one day
That save file thing was really generous of you. 😊
Thanks for this video and makes me want to play it. It makes sense both this game and Devil May Cry 3 came out in same year especially chapter intro. DMC 3 did mission intro within cutscenes.
Devil of Oz
This game is one of my favorite games of all time, thanks for covering it! I look it up every couple of months hoping of some news about a remake. Hopefully one day!
i was just rewatching your ps2 action game vids last night, so happy to see a new one :D
damn homie, if this video came out a month ago, I could have asked Johnny Yong Bosch in person why he and the others were uncredited in this game lol
As soon as I saw the title I knew exactly what game you were referring to. OZ was one of my favorite PS2 imports back in the 2000's. My then girlfriend and I saw the trailer for this game online and we loved the music and concepts, so we got it as soon as it came out. Somehow we managed to get all of the extra content even though we were playing in Japanese (there were GameFaqs fortunuately). But in any case, imagine our disappointment when it was released in Europe as "Sword of Etheria" and we realized we could have played in English. It makes me sad that my ex and I never did our cosplays of Dorothy and Feel.
20:34 Gungrave Overdose has that. It's one of the unlockables I got after beating Kick Ass difficulty.
no soul should suffer through that game on kick ass difficulty with that as a reward
So many of these games you review look so freaking sick, and I always get my hear broken at "never released in the U.S."
I mean this in the nicest way possible, your videos feel so genuine and cozy. I found your channel recently, after a recent binge of a few character action games, and your delivery of analysis is this odd blend of refreshingly casual, and well studied and informed. Every time I click a video, I lean back in my chair, and feel like an old friend on discord is telling me about this cool game he found.
Thank you for making your videos, and making them the way you do. It feels like it's been a long time since I've found a place on the internet that feels perfectly niche, and I just want you to know how much I appreciate your work, your dedication, and your love for the medium of games. Bringing light to that which most haven't seen helps us all expand our horizons.
Platonically, I love you so bad. Be well.
I learned about this game from a song on DDR. Then I learned it wasn't released in the US.😢
Michiru Yamane is probably the bst soundtrack composer in existence.
Wow this game. It looks good for a PS2 game NGL and those character portraits are beautiful. plus that power ranger bit is super funny.
That is a god damn lot of bonus content. Can't think of any other game with so much extra stuff
Yet again, the must play/try nostalgia games are hitting my heart and loving it ❤ You are a fave Cvit 🕺
20:35
The earlier Guilty Gear and BlazBlue games have a feature really similar to this one. You can listen to every character's voice lines (in both Japanese and English in the case of BlazBlue).
The 2000-2010 was the decade of dark emo existencialist japanese games with rock and anime characters with that cold ambient being replaced with the power of friendship and weird control settings of weird cool mechanics
Heyyyyyyyy love the vids whenever they come out, only thing I wish for is more berserk cause bro I love when you talk about it, love the vids keep it up
this game was different but the music always hit the way it needed to.
You could probably play replicant's soundtrack over anything and I'll think at least a bit higher of it.
Edit: So this game has some stuff similar to Nier, I'm sold.
I noticed in the clips of the credits that there's a section for "Zako Program" after "Boss Program", that is very telling about the localization priorities ("zako" is a very japanese term for regular enemies). If they didn't bother translating the credits properly I'm not surprised they didn't bother updating the name info in them either.
This was my dream game as a kid, though, having grown up in the US I never actually got to play it; I only knew about it because of the Dance Dance Revolution EXTREME 2 track titled "Polovtsian Dances and Chorus" which used cutscenes from this game
now this is mayking the devils cry boys
Nice I'm not the only one who knows this game
I've been meaning to play this for around a year or two, I'll definitely get to it eventually
As an American I only knew this existed through Dance Dance Revolution when Konami use to try and hype up PS2 games through the series
I waited for the release so I could try it out
Been waiting a long time
OH MY GOD i literally spent months trying to remember or find this game, i played the shit out of this game and for the life of i just couldn't remember it's name wow ...
Thanks man you brought me back so many memories
My first ever game on console, finally seeing someone talk about it.
Did you enjoy it?
Aah, The Sword of Etheria. Now that was something special. I had a blast playing it, this time last year. it One of my most enjoyed games from when i got back to the hack & slash of old. Also, It perfectly represents the PS2 gen Gotta love the edge!
It had a lot of love in it, sadly it didn't have enough time in the oven. It could have been double the fun (and half tthe frustration) with a few tweaks.
I was trying to remember the name of this game where your enemies played as volleyballs, thank you Cvlt!
I started seeing the video and was thinking "how did I not play this" and the EU release explains why. Its so weird this was EU only especially with the whole OZ thing.
Wake up babe, new Cvit video just dropped
Woo, Hi Fi Rush mention!!
No, OTG can be done with air down attack or slide attack.
They can catch from the ground knockback.
Transformation is easy. You need to do alot of deathblow combos with high hit.
The upgrades are not hard to get when you are doing 16x multiplier.
I’m aware you can OTG off the helm splitter. It’s why I said in the video “you lack the ability to OTG in multiple situations” and not “you can’t OTG period” while showing me doing it hundreds of times throughout of the video.
@Cvit you have helm splitter and slide. You can otg in any situation other than leaving it too long.
I have not said you denied otg period.
Also deathblows otg.
Considering I really like nier and kingdom hearts I’d probably like this game to
I just now realized your pfp is guts faceapp smiling
Discovered this game by playing Dance Dance Revolution Extreme 2, there's a song there were the gameplay plays on the screen, almost went mad trying to find the game.
Another great video!
I must play! Tnk you for the video dude, you're the best!
So this is where my Kozmo support went...
Well it beats pendulum disney era shit
El Shaddai is a trigger phrase for me because it was 5 bucks one year and then the next it was 50.
Why does this look so sick?!?!?!?
It's so sad how far Konami have fallen. This video makes me want a whole series of fairy tale sentai action games.
I want to play this so bad... I'm not really big into emulation, but this has got me tempted.
Either that or importing a PAL PS2
I recommend it.
Good shit dawg keep up the good work
So what I understand fiel is tin man, Leon is well obviously the lion, Almira I’m not sure but could possibly be the scarecrow but I might be wrong.
I remember hawking the heck out of this game when it was first mentioned, during my 3 year in college. Their website actually had downloadable music to promote the game, as well as wallpapers that were pretty large by that time. I never did get this game and I regretted not getting into it at the time.
Never actually played this game but was always interested in it because of DDR Extreme 2 using it in one of their song's music videos.
I definitely have seen this game somewhere before and add it to my ps2 backlog that is much more urgent than my regular one

Shoutouts to Infil and his glossary
wow after all these years, I finally learn the name of the game when I was playing a song from it on Dance dance revolution.
Watching the opening made me think that you would likely appreciate Shadow Hearts 1&2. That pair of games is the closest any jrpg has ever gotten for me to the perfection of Chrono Trigger, and they have been criminally underplayed and appreciated. 2 is the real masterpiece, but they are two halves of a complete whole, and 1 is a great game in its own right. Your critical eye, discernment, and perspicacity are required to fully appreciate them, and they deserve the appreciation of those of us with the capacity and passion for doing so. Whether it's for a video or not, do yourself a favor and play them before you die.
edit: Wow, what a neat game.... Japanese PS1-2 era was truly a golden age. Thanks for covering this, I likely never would have known about it otherwise.
Its sad to know that this kind of game is just never gonna be a thing again.
Considering that Crispin Freeman's with SAG-AFTRA, the lack of voice actors in the credits is almost certainly due to this gig being non-union work.
Sword of Etheria is the reason I learned how to use an emulator. As well as God Hand.
Ah I remember this game. I saw a Japanese promo video on it prior to its release, found the concept interesting and then heard nothing about it.
It’s nice to finally hear someone talk about it.
Thank you for solving the origins of a DDR song from my childhood
The Kozmo mention shook me to my core
Randomly found this while digging through rom sites a month or two back. Glad you too know about this batshit game
3:56 Say no more. I'm hunting it down.
20:30. Castevania: Dawn of Sorrow has this feature as well.
PLAY DIRGE OF CERBERUS I SWEAR THE GAME IS GOOD DON'T LISTEN TO THE CASUALS IT'S GOOD YOU WILL LIKE IT CVIT (As long as you can dodge the bullets)
omg - first track and I left a sub. finally someone who appreciates the real nier - and have taste.
The way you're supposed to know about [mechanic] is by reading the manual.
THIS GAME is GREAT it's like a ff15 combat that doesn't SUCK
Put your things down, everyone. CVIT has just uploaded another vidro
You mentioned El Shaddai and I subscribe
I have to try that one day.
I miss the wild west days of gaming aka the PS2 era. Creativity was more important than monetization. The profits will come if your game isn't ass in every aspect. Now we get half baked ideas with $700+ of DLC (looking at you Ubisoft)
Increasing budgets and quality demands are kinda what killed this era of gaming, sadly - since spendings are so overinflated, studios are forced to make the safest stuff possible while also overmonetizing it to hell to go in the black/satisfy investors.
Thankfully there was a bit of an AA game revival lately, so not all hope is lost.
With those influences, I'm shocked I've never heard of this game before now (it didn't come out in America) well that would explain it.
It's Europe exclusive.
19:07 You know Cannon Spike exists, right? B.B. Hood was in that
The mode with Dorothy is a nod or continuation of what they did in Dracula X with Maria in making her overpowered.
I’m planning on streaming this game thanks to you! I’ve asked my friends to guess what it is but I bet they can’t. I’ve wanted to know what it was for years. Just wish DDR would have told me what the name of it was so I could have looked into it sooner.
Is it on steam? A whole bunch of barely known JRPG’s are on there, I wouldn’t be surprised either way.
Sadly no. Only on the Ps2 in EU and JP
I love this game but the lack of "zip to the enemy" mechanic really hurts the experience especially when your AI partners absolutely can do that.
Also if I recall correctly, Feel, if used as an AI partner, can bring you back to life fast when you're down and you'll not have reduced HP.
Personally my favorite character to play as of the main cast was Almira, her high as hell jump and fast attacks combined with a "fuck everything underneath me" burst skill, compensated for poor camera view in a lot of scenarios.
