As a Volunteer coordinator and our yearly Yosemite clean up they had bear proof food lockers big brown steel boxes. That was 1999 thru 2007 and still im sure they have them at every campsite. Bear in our group campsite nightly
Doesn’t involve animals but to a 13 year old it was scary! We camped at The Bells Campground in Aspen Colorado in the late 60’s. Two college guys climbed the mountain over the lake (not The Bells) and one fell. They had no hiking equipment or experience. The other rushed down to get help. Rangers, experienced climbers and helicopter climbed until they found the young man. He had died in the fall. And watching that rescue was really emotional. I remember crying that night wanting to leave. We had already been planning on leaving the next morning but that night was a very long night for me or so it seemed!
My parents took me to Yellowstone when I was about 6 or 7 yrs old. We camped in a tent. My dad kept all of our food in an old metal Coleman cooler (this was back in the 70's) a few yards away from our tent. Sure enough, we had a family of bears come visit in the middle of the night. I was terrified but none of us made a sound. My parents watched from an opening in the tent as those bears threw the cooler around trying to get it open. The bears finally gave up and left. That cooler had a couple of big scratches on it but they never got it open and it was still usable. I refused to ever sleep in a tent again. I want metal around me if I'm going to sleep in the woods. And that's my story.
Back in the days those coolers were made with tough metal. I was getting permit at long pine for whitney. There are photos and warning to keep any edible or scented item out of vehicles. The adult bears plied open the door frame like sardine cans.
Wow, that was one tough cooler! I wonder if they'd be able to get into it today? I think the bears are getting smarter about getting into stuff. And I totally understand why you prefer a hard surface between you and the nature... :)
OMG that would be terrifying!!! I have never even hiked in bear country. Wow..I don't know what I would have done, Good thing you knew exactly how to react.
Wow!! Thank goodness you were both okay. Yeah, I would've been praying to all the gods. So what do you think was all the plastic bag scrunching noise since they didn't tear into that sack?
I think it was just repeatedly scratching and batting at the bag causing all the chips etc to make a lot of noise. You know how loud and crinkly chips bags can be!
Really good cautionary tale. However, there is a far greater chance of a life-threatening disaster by simply getting in your car and driving than having a bear attack you.
Oh wow, that does sound like a scary experience. I would have freaked out! 🐻😅 I’ve never met a bear while camping, but almost every time I go on a camping trip and sleep in my tent, I have at least one nightmare about one breaking into my tent. One time I woke up screaming and then heard a tiny little noise outside my tent. It must have been a mouse or squirrel, but it took me a while to calm down and go back to sleep! 😂
Yeah, it can be a little unnerving. But if you don't bring anything smelly into the tent, like soaps, deodorants, food, candy or anything else with an interesting smell, the bears will leave you alone in favor of some other thing that smells more enticing... :)
He was clawing and swiping at the bag, which had a lot of crunchy chip bags inside it, and the whole thing made so much noise it sounded like he was destroying the bag, but it was the chip bags inside I guess just making a lot of noise.
Oh man, that would be enough to soil my undies. We were on a side road up by Yosemite and a bear cub was walking up this single lane road. We pulled off side of road thinking mom was probably close by. The cub ended up between the car which i was passenger in and the side of the road that was basically straight up hill. The cub started climbing up that side when I realized my window was halfway rolled. I could have stuck myvhabd in out and touched it. Instead closed window and we drove forward. Thinking mom would be there any minute. Never saw her but let park rangers know what we had seen and where
Have you encountered bears in the wild? What happened? Here's another creepy story: ruclips.net/video/po6AAHCwGtw/видео.html

There’s nothing to compare the fear we have for our children’s safety!
So frightening. I’m glad you had the knowledge you had to keep you and your daughter safe.
Me too, but I'll never go out there without a bear can again.
Wow! that will age you another 10 years!! You made it and prayer helped a lot good job
LOL, no doubt!
What an experience.... 😮
Yeah, something I NEVER want to repeat... :)

Ohhhh, how awful! How kind of his friend and the rescuers to do their best to save him, but I guess it was his time for whatever reason. Hugs!
That’s just so sad.

Wow, that's amazing!
Thank-you for speaking up for the poor bears! Terrifying story. Good job keeping your s... together!😮
Diane, an interesting story that helps the listener deal with a potentially "Grizzly" yet "Bearable" situation. Cheers, Mate.
LOL, you're too punny, Mate! 😂
I’ve run into wild grizzlies when I lived in Alaska but I was in my car. Still, they got very close. They are incredibly impressive in person.
Oh wow, grizzlies scare me big time. Being in a car with the windows up is the only way I'd want to see... :)
Wow...that was so scary!! Its amazing you were able to keep your daughter calm. Glad you both were okay.
Definitely, I was a little surprised at how calm she stayed too. But it helped that I kept my cool (on the outside at least, haha)
OMG that would be terrifying!!! I have never even hiked in bear country. Wow..I don't know what I would have done, Good thing you knew exactly how to react.
Good thing this was black bear country. I will not sleep in a tent alone out in grizzly country!
@@dianeschmiane that’s what I thought too!
I don’t know how backpackers do it in grizzly territory 😱
Terrifying. We have black bears here in Georgia
I'm glad to hear you've still got enough wild space to support bears!
Tahoe bears are the most spoiled out there
Meaning, they get so much easy food from people?
Wow!! Thank goodness you were both okay. Yeah, I would've been praying to all the gods. So what do you think was all the plastic bag scrunching noise since they didn't tear into that sack?

Lets hear it for "Dumb Tahoe Bears!" 😆Oh, good lord. No, thank you.
LOL, they're smarter now than they were back then... :)
Consider yourself very lucky lady. 😮🐻😮
Yes, I am so, so lucky. Never again!
Goodness, you had ne wide-eyed. But girllll brave to even sleep out there
It was a crazy night for sure!

Wait, so what was the bear eating and clawing at all night? I am so confused.

Dawn, so smart to roll up the window and move on, because you never know where mom is and they're known for being very protective of their young!
@@dianeschmiane exactly!
@@dianeschmiane curious if your daughter ever went out again
She did. She hiked 1250 miles of the PCT from Mexico to Truckee.
