  • Where should the sweep picking motions come from, the elbow or the wrist? Today, I’ll show you the right way sweep pick to get the best speed, accuracy and sound. Hint: the most effective sweep picking motions do not come from the elbow, nor the wrist. It’s a combination of the shoulder and the elbow.
Mastering sweep picking on the guitar starts with developing the right technique. And the right technique is based on the right motions of your picking hand.
I’ll show you what happens when you sweep pick from the wrist or sweep pick from the elbow. There are problems with both. A better way to sweep pick is to use multiple joints to create the picking motions. This keeps the pick angle and tilt of the pick at optimum position. And that creates a more fluid sound, great efficiency speed and tone.
First, I’ll teach you how to sweep pick with the best picking angle.
Second, I’ll teach you how to control the pick’s tilt as you sweep across the strings. Picking this way will help your sweeping on the guitar stay in control. It also makes the articulation of the notes more consistent
Then I’ll show you exactly where the motions of your picking hand should come from. It’s not from the wrist. It’s not from the elbow. It’s a combination of 2 joints in your picking arm: The shoulder and the elbow … at the same time. In one integrated and optimized motion to make your sweep picking sound a lot better and become a lot easier.

You should absolutely post your old videos. Don't underestimate how powerful it is seeing your mentors struggle with the same problems you had. It's good to remind people that we are all human and that our idols didn't pick this stuff up right away either.

I actually had a teacher who taught these concepts as well, and was a great player. But I still have a quirk with my thumb. I just like to say that it's great that you put this lesson out there for free!

I'm a beginner, I want to start this with a metronome at 30 bpm, which sounds extremely low, but I will up it by 10 bpm every week if technique stays the same and accurate, is this a good approach? I'm thinking that once I master it, speed should follow hmm. Thanks a lot for the video, I actually didn't find many info on the picking hand and you have insane detailed tips that I was looking for.

I'm glad you liked the video :) About your question: there are many ways to build speed with sweep picking and the one you describe may work very well or it may not work at all. It all depends on: how exactly you practice and what precisely is holding your speed back right now (it could be many things).
