One of my first guitars was the FG700S when I was 13. Still have it almost 20 years later and it's still one of my all time favorites. For a stage guitar I had a Epiphone for a while then a Taylor, for various reasons I didn't care for either of them and I thought, "you know, I sure love that old FG700S." So I went to the music store, purchased a 830 and had a pickup installed, that's my new stage guitar. I love it! Can't beat a Yamaha. I used to think I always wanted to own a Martin someday but I may be a Yamaha man for life now.

Yamaha has always made great guitars at affordable prices. The guitars coming out of Japan and China today are easily comparable to the bigger, more popular expensive brands. I own both and have made comparisons. Only difference is my Martin was way more expensive and I have to wonder why. The FG-850 is on my "must have" list. Most of my guitars are Spruce and Rosewood so the Mahogany would be a nice change of pace. Thanks for the great review.

The FG800 does NOT stay in tune. I currently own one and keep it in a temperature-controlled space, yet I always have to make adjustments prior to practicing.
No guitar stays in tune. Does it go out of tune after you play it? For how long? Is it out of tune the next day? Get used to it. Get used to tuning your guitar every few minutes. Every song. No guitar stays in tune for long. I saw a bridge called an ever tune and that seems to stay in tune quite a bit, but it goes out of tune. I guarantee it. Buy a guitar in 2075, when materials science and nano tech has advanced. You will buy strings in a special "freezie pack" filled with liquid nitrogen. Once out of the package, you have 10 minutes to pu the string on. Once you do, you hit it with a hair dryer, on high and the string goes into tune, and stays that way until it breaks
My FG820 stays in tune most of the time. Meaning I rarely have to tune it. I would suggest you are using crap strings. Yamaha tuning machines are known to be very smooth and reliable. The other possibility is that the tension screws may have worked loose. But would be unusual.
I wish you would have played the exact thing on all the guitars. 1 part chords other part finger style 😬 dang they all sound good Was on 830 /850 but maybe 840/850
Hi, I have a doubt. I bought a second hand Yamaha FG470 SA. I would like to know, when were these models made? In what year? I have not been able to find out. Thank you!
There is no proper size that is designated towards the level of skill of a musician. I started on a full dreadnought when I was a child. I must have only been five feet tall at the time
To add, as the gent above said, go into a store and feel them out. I find Jumbos are too big and heavy at the back side and require more downforce while holding the neck 😕 Imo that is stupid
The Mahogany and Rosewood don't add any warmth because they are veeners on these guitars. 80% of the sound comes from the Sitka top. The remaining sound from the back and sides comes from the Beech or Basswood laminate strips.
Laminate strips are a lot cheaper than solid wood that's why they use them to save money, so I don't know where you got the idea that laminate strips cost more than solid wood. Some guitar makers like Sigma use solid Basswood with a Rosewood or Mahogany veneer and call that Rosewood or mahogany laminate. If you use laminate strips and glue then it doesn't really matter what wood you use as the glue significant effects the resonance and thus quality of sound.
I put the L.R. Baggs Lyric pickup in my FG-830, which is a better acoustic pickup than what any guitar company would provide. I get a real acoustic sound through my amp. My opinion.
I love the whole series, but which of these do you recommend the most for a beginner? Pricing doesn't matter much, I just want a great guitar to start off with! :)
Check out used ones first, pawn shops, classifieds, etc... But if you really want brand new, FG800 is only $200 so you really won't go broke if you get one.

i know this was 5 years ago, but now, how do these guitars compare to the newer FG5 RED LABEL. since the FG850 has mahogany top, would it project more bass than the FG5 with sitka spruce top?
Can anyone help suggest for a beginner to buy FG800 or 820 or 830 or 840 or 850. Also, it's weird that I could only see 800 on yamaha online store and the rest is not available in the world that could ship to India. BTW, my bad, until I hear the voice, I thought it was a british Woman.. LoLzz
Yamaha needs to go back to the old days back to the 80s acoustic , then they had fuller sound and deeper bass, not sure what they're doing now, but seems the fg series has flopped maybe not in BUILD and woods but as far as tone yes
I found the first one of the series, old lasts years model FG 700MS, with its head chopped off! yes decapitated, so I got it for £69. Wish me luck as amateur first time luthier putting the head back together again!
I love Yamaha guitars, but this guy's playing style does Yamaha no favors. It would be better to have someone a little less spastic demonstrating these guitars.
This is just silly. The musician spends 3 minutes strumming each one and says he's really impressed. (So impressed he has to look at the label to remember what he just played.) Consumers should get off their back sides and go to a music store and PLAY these guitars. This "overview" adds nothing we can't get from a promotional picture.
I pity anyone that pounds on a guitar like that when playing rhythm. I stay far away from those players at jams. I have been playing guitar for 50 years, and I have NEVER broken a string when playing. Fact.
@Ash_Ling Medivac I agree. I have had a Martin dreadnought for 20 years as my main acoustic. However, since I bought the FG-830 2 years ago it has replaced my Martin, and it was one third the price of the Martin. The Martin model that has scalloped bracing is the HD-28 and it usually sells for around $3000. I have played several of these and, in my opinion they don't sound any better than the FG-830, which is 1/10th the price.
@@helpinghand123 I still like the FG830, and like most acoustics, it does sound "metallic with deep bass", but only after you put on new strings. (Sound studios prefer you use old strings when recording). However, I have actually moved on to the Yamaha FG-TA Trans-Acoustic guitar, which also has scalloped bracing, which provides great sustain. It also includes a built-in device that add chorus and reverb effects by sending vibrations to the back and sides of the guitar. The add-on device called Tonewood Amp does this, but Yamaha figured out how to put this all inside the guitar. It doesn't do much for a fast bluegrass tune, but on a slower ballad it can make shivers go down my spine.
Please use more experienced guitarists, like Pancho Garza from Alamo Music center. This guy here played very unpleasant minor chords... and cannot reach full advantage of great Yamahas.
your paying an extra 40 bucks more from the previous model just cuz they use some kind of sea food for bracing..scallop bracing mmmmmmmmmmm yummy....almost 300 bucks for this junk....spend a little more buy the guitar you really want dont settle for crap...playing a piece of crap is not much fun .your fingers cry out for help.
The 800 series is not worse than the 700 series. What you're paying more for are quite a few upgrades actually. This guy is not listing the differences. He forgets what he's talking about in some of the demonstrations therefore it is clear that he he's not well-versed on Yamaha. For instance on the FG830 over the FG820 he doesn't mention that there are Pearl inlays around the sound hole. That is a massive difference. Especially for someone who likes a little bling..... 😑

FG820: 2:07
FG830: 3:22
FG840: 4:48

It's laminate, it doesnt add anything in terms of tone.

@@vs_830 thank you for the reply, I bought FG830 now
@@fullstackspiderman How do you like the FG830? Did the action need to be lowered?
@@helpinghand123 yes but I didn't do anything about it and not using it for a few months now.
Are all of these dreadnought or concert sized or did I miss something?
For sure buying one but waffling on size.
scooter112391 dreadnought, check out the FS series for concert size
Eastern Mahogany means NATO. Is the FG820S made of Eastern Mahogany or Mahogany i.e. Honduran mahogany?
the neck is nato the back and sides are real mahogany
Awesome guitars.
the GOOCH
I have an FG300. It's a great guitar!
Yamaha needs to go back to the old days back to the 80s acoustic , then they had fuller sound and deeper bass, not sure what they're doing now, but seems the fg series has flopped maybe not in BUILD and woods but as far as tone yes
Check out the LL series then. I've owned quite a few L Series and they have a more warm sound. More bass. Better woods and other materials.
For instance the LL6 ARE sounds and plays phenomenally well. And it is very affordable.
I found the first one of the series, old lasts years model FG 700MS, with its head chopped off! yes decapitated, so I got it for £69. Wish me luck as amateur first time luthier putting the head back together again!

Any day .... fg.830
who are you looking at?
To be honest, I can't get past his name.
you like the gooch?
unabonger777 grundle
Man, give some respect for something something Gooch.
They also come with a very ugly green label inside at no extra charge.....
the labels of a martin, gibson, etc., are very pretty... right?
No sane person stares inside your sound hole and discriminates your guitar from what label colors were used.... 😑
@@Twitch_Moderator I am laughing hard at your comment here🤣

nice guitar faces :-)
Gag!

Decisions.. decisions hmmmm
Uhh, talk to the camera?
Early playing on the FG800 is horrific....strings too light and action too low for such rhythm stuff. "I pity the poor instrument"
I pity anyone that pounds on a guitar like that when playing rhythm. I stay far away from those players at jams. I have been playing guitar for 50 years, and I have NEVER broken a string when playing. Fact.
Я сначала подумал, что это девушка)))

@Ash_Ling Medivac I agree. I have had a Martin dreadnought for 20 years as my main acoustic. However, since I bought the FG-830 2 years ago it has replaced my Martin, and it was one third the price of the Martin. The Martin model that has scalloped bracing is the HD-28 and it usually sells for around $3000. I have played several of these and, in my opinion they don't sound any better than the FG-830, which is 1/10th the price.
@@reoguy43 How do you like the FG830 now? Does it sound "metallic with deep bass" as someone said?
Nice guitars. I can't get over the fact that it looks like he's wearing a ton of makeup.
stephenacamille You’ve heard of the band Kiss right? 🤯😂
Toilet paper...
your paying an extra 40 bucks more from the previous model just cuz they use some kind of sea food for bracing..scallop bracing mmmmmmmmmmm yummy....almost 300 bucks for this junk....spend a little more buy the guitar you really want dont settle for crap...playing a piece of crap is not much fun .your fingers cry out for help.
My Martin d-18 sounds wayyy better!
Looks like a dang women
Awesome guitars.
