I forget about Dutch holidays. I was born in Amsterdam. I just don't care about such things. I showed up to work on Christmas morning one time. That's how little I care.

You are not meeting up with Americans here in NL than.... ;-)
As a dutchie, I have a couple of American friends here in NL and they DO remind me all the time on the American holidays, including their traditions. Even I can hardly forget (ignore) them... 🙂

This is unacceptable! The Americans will relatiate by not observing Koningsdag! Take that Cheesehead!

I don’t think that was her point tbh. She mentioned a couple of times something like “obviously they don’t celebrate that here”, but what shook her was how SHE completely forgot about the American holidays as a result, the same holidays that she’s been celebrating for her entire life

Yeah let’s not say anything disrespectful to troops who invaded countries for no reason other than seeding tyranny like in Iraq and creating instability. Your government treats them like trash afterwards so don’t worry about saying something disrespectful.
Also in the Netherlands, we have other holidays. Celebrate those and learn more about the culture.

The troops were send to Iraq partly to topple the tyranny of Saddam Hussein - the American government didn't have a clear strategy how to govern Iraq after Saddam Hussein, but that isn't the fault of the soldiers who went in and removed this dictator from power.
Also in The Netherlands: the invasion in Iraq was supported by the Dutch government. Maybe learn more about this before replying....

Well... yeah. You don't always need your mind stuck on everything from back home when you're out and about elsewhere.

There's a lot of countries with independence days. They're just on different dates.
The Dutch have their own version, celebrating our liberation at the end of WWII, on the 5th of may.
Though you've probably noticed that one if you were in the Netherlands at the time. :)
At least you're not one of those Americans who complain that it's unamerican for stores to be open on the fourth of July.
Yeah, we aren't American, nice of them to notice...

It would be odd, wouldn't it, when I walk around in the states, and on 27th of April everybody is dressed Orange, en is celebrating for the Dutch king.
2nd: What does 14th of July mean to you .. probably not much.
For people from France it means the world to them. It's their day

No, of course we don't celebrate the 4th of july, it has nothing to do with the Netherlands or any other country. It's not even an American holiday, only for the people of the USA. Nevertheless have fun when you celebrate it.
