A lot of expats like to blame the Dutch for their own lack of proficiency in Dutch. It's because of the Dutch! They always speak English! Well, they don't if you don't cooperate. Truth is that many expats really don't care about the language. No time, no effort, weird sentence constructions that nobody understands. Anybody can learn enough in a few months to be able to have a conversation about anything. Even Brits & Americans.

I thought this would be a very negative video, where I could see/hear what's actually wrong with my country, but it isn't. It's actually quite positive and nice. So much better to see that for once. Because we Dutchies love to complain about everything. Just seeying a video about something that should be negative being quite positive, is a breathtaking experience. Well done.

Being direct, means we Dutch also can take it if one is direct to us. No problem at all, as everybody has the right on his or her own opinion. No use and no need to beat around the bush. You can have a fairly good meal here, by thje way. And there are fairly good restaurants. Just don't be surprised when these restaurants offer Chinese, Indonesian, Italian, Greek, French, Turkish, Japanese, Libanese or any cuisine other than Dutch.

As far as the Dutch food goes, I was amazed at the numerous Indonesian, Argentinian and Middle Eastern restaurants in Amsterdam. So yes, perhaps the traditional Dutch food is somewhat
predictable, but the influence of the regions that the Dutch have explored and settled over the centuries is clearly seen there, and like you said, the spices are proof of that.

The old-Dutch food on its own is very simple and straightforward, but we luckily have a lot of different types of restaurants and exotic supermarkets.
Born in de 70s, I grew up on aardappelen-groente-vlees (potato-vegetable-meat), with a (homemade) soup as a starter and with chocolade vla (chocolate custard) as toetje (dessert). But nowadays most people I know, no longer eat like that everyday. Also, due to our colonial history, our cuisine is heavily influenced by Indonesian cuisine, even when I was still a kid and probably even before that, our diets did not solely consist of bland food. Heck, if you use herbs and spices, even stamppot has a lot of flavor.

The netherlands makes even the most hated California look like freedom Florida with their absurd eco laws. for example, now they want to ban combustion engines from company vehicles in amsterdam & claim it's because it will cause people to live 11 months more & prevent asthma. yet, they plan to give out exemptions to small businesses & some companies. pretty much every company is gonna file for an "exemption" which kind of makes this law pointless. there is also something called the green new deal, for simplicity sake, you need to give 2% of your GDP. NL is giving 1.71% so clearly it's just BS as they are not putting their money where their mouth is.
    2. OVERREGULATED. if you believe in freedom, do not move here. the government is all over you. if you make even 10 dollars more they will know about it. everything is digital & connected, big brother is watching you constantly. Vehicle inspections are strict, rules are strict, speed limits are strict.. it's like a goddamn classroom in here. No talking, no shouting, no dancing! On top of that, you also can't defend yourself it seems. forget guns, even pepper spray is illegal. Damn, even I'm illegal.
    3. Food is defintely horrible. I remember crying at work.. it's so bad that i find myself going back to american restaurants here & only those.
    4. Souless and unfriendly. If you are someone that's passionate about things, do not move to the netherlands. People are good at nodding heads here, but not following through with promises. It's all for the moment with them, but when it comes time to show up, you're on your own. They never go out of their way, it's always "not my problem" kind of thing. The richer areas will be a lot better, you'll have some really happy dutch that won't mind, but most people here are poor compared to the US. They are miserable & i don't fully blame them. Also seems like immigrants are unfriendly towards each other.
    5. Expensive. i feel like dutch people always try to make excuses for their country saying "everywhere is expensive". How much more or less expensive would be my next question. let's bring up some numbers then. Fuel is 2.00 euros per litre (basic petrol) in the netherlands, in california (highest in the US) it's more like 1.2 per litre (super petrol). California's high grade fuel is far cheaper than the netherland's basic fuel. So to simplify that, the highest fuel in the US is on par with the netherlands, basic fuel price. They always claim the US is more expensive, we have 50 states to choose from, are you sure? it's a constant theme here of not feeling fulfilled after buying/paying for something, constant rip off/scams

I am born and raised in the Netherlands and am black. Not speaking Dutch is Absolut no problem at all if you are white, white expats and their children get accepted and accepted everywhere but if you have a skin tone you mostly get the treatment of being a poor low life aslym / fortune seeker and people block you from acces to stuff by saying, you need to be competent / fluent in Dutch, with kids for example if you bring them to a good school / child care / sportclubs dominated by white children they will round up 1001 excuses: 1: We are full but we can put you on the waiting list, 2: you need to speak fluent Dutch, 3: We can, what school your child at: example: HAVO (140) answer ahh we require VWO level (145)
I grew up in the 80ties it kinda looks it is all better now but the Dutch call themselves tolerant but the way the white Dutch handle tolerance is just ignoring other groups and bar them. This was demonstrated recently when Ukrainian refugees came they have acces to everything and people take them in their house and money from day 1 Muslim and black immigrants certainly do not get this treatment or help!

Its' less hilly/mountanous topography, and the egalitarian lifestyle is personally a plus for me. It is not unusual to have a group of friends or persons come visiting or in a gathering and having no chairs to sit but while you went to fetch more chairs only to come back and find them graciously having helped themselves out sitting on the floor and say to you - "geef niet hoor, zit ook goed zo" LOL 😄.

I think in most dutch home these days you won't just find dutch meals. You'll find chinese, turkish, italian, mexican, surinam influences, etc. Even if you look at restaurants there is a huge variety in the type of food we like from italian, greek, turkish, mexican, argentinian food. So I think we as Dutch people do have a lot of variety food wise because of our love and adoption of food from other countries instead of sticking to our own cuisine.

This is exactly what I wanted to say. The Dutch cuisine at itself isn't as sophisticated as e.g. the French or Italian cuisine. The variaty of restaurants and foods you can get however is huge. It ranges from asian cuisines, european cuisines, african cuisines to latin american cuisines. I've been travelling for a longer period and the moste 'boring' thing was that i often didn't encounter the variety of food options that I'm used to. Coming back in the Netherlands was a breath of fresh air because I had al the different cuisines available again.

And to be honest, I could compose a much less sweet list, like the fact that the country is in transformation in the direction of the worst of the USA without the best. For instance the political goal (and already in place) to abolish the pension age of 65 and replace it with 78. So when you're not rich, which is a minority so that's why they get away with it, you'll work till you drop. The whole tendency is rich means rights. It's scary as hell. Things like legalisation of euthanasia which was save when the NL was a welfare state will become creepy with rights (to life) dependent on wealth, for instance.

Also, can I share Isaiah 53:5 " But HE was WOUNDED For our TRANSGRESSIONS, he was BRUISED for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His STRIPES we are HEALED."
God the Father loves you so much that He sent Holy Sinless Jesus (His Holy Son) to earth to be born of a virgin. Then, to grow up and die on a cross for our sins. He was in the tomb for 3 days, then Father God raised Holy & Sinless Jesus Christ (Y'shua) to Life! He appeared to people and went back to Heaven. We must receive Sinless Jesus sincerely to be God's child(John 1:12).After we get saved by grace through faith in Christ, if we truly love the Lord Jesus Christ, then we will obey Jesus(John 14:15). Mark 1:15 "And saying, the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye, and believe the gospel." Jesus said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments. "There's a real hell. It says in Revelation 21:8 "But for the cowardly, & unbelieving, and abominable, & murderers, & immoral persons sorcerers & idolaters & all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire & brimstone..." Please sincerely receive Holy Jesus and put your true faith and trust in Him today and please repent. Will you have a Real encounter with Holy Lord Jesus (Y'shua is His Hebrew Name) and stay in a Genuine relationship with Him daily please?

Yes we learn our kids to swim at a young age so they can save them self when we have a flood or when they fall into the water. We learned to life with and respect the water . About the food real dutch food is gross like stamppot but back in the earky days the only thing we had was stamppot because it was easily made and didn't took that much time to prepare . Now we have tons of restaurants from all over the world like pizza, chinese ,mexican, japanese ,greek etc so if you love to prepare that and stand for hours in the kitchen you can get the ingrediënt in the supermarket of toko. About the weather you are so right but when we have sun you better have your airco on . I love the vibe you give and here we tolerante most things as long that you don't force it onto the people . Like religion we have churches, moskees etc all over the country and we accept allot over here which basicly makes the Netherlands an awesome country to life in.

I was told that the Surinamese people are the one who build this country from the ground up, and that the Netherlands is still thriving from all the goods that they took from Surinam and the culture of Surinamese people. The Surinamese people are considered native to not only Suriname but also the Netherlands.

I agree that the original Dutch cuisine is not that experimental. It's based on efficiency. The staples are basically potatoes, seasonal veggies and some meat. Potatoes and veggies often mixed in a stamppot. I still love it. But as you mentioned we did import a lot of other cuisines because we are open minded. It might be hard to find fufu in the local grocery store, most of all outside of bigger cities, but I can go to the African store and get it there. I can go and get some traditional Chinese food and not the ones that are adapted to the European taste. It will probably taste like a cows rectum and it probably is. LOL But you can still get it. Dutchies love to travel and are willing to taste the local food in the countries they visit. But of course you can't buy Capibara meat in the stores, at least not yet.

Love that you respect the open mindedness so much! I'm a Belgian and gay and honestly many people from Asian or African countries scare me because many (especially young men) take the gay hating culture to here and this is one of the main reasons why I fear immigrants from these countries so much.
I never judge someone before I have spoken to them, but the things my eyes see and my ears hear are there and not only 'News propaganda'.

Dennis sorry about your sexual orientation.
Most African Nations value men and women unions.
I am from Ghana and so we dont have yet the courage to accept such unions.

The experience of their ancestors is what informs the antipathy to homosexuality; not so long ago, Europeans forced enslaved Africans to engage in sodomy as a punishment. The memory of that still lingers!

@@barbudo12 Yeah that's indeed horrible, though I do feel like some use what some people's ancestors did in the past is sometimes used as an excuse to make Western nations feel guilty about what some dead people in the past have done. In all fairness, the Western countries these days are among the most open minded in the world and human rights and equality is way better here than in any Asian or African country (sometimes even to a toxic level towards locals) so I do feel it's unfair to blame us for dead people's actions while outside of the West they laugh in your face when you call them racist or 'woke' stuff.
And skin color doesn't mean anything in this regard aswell, if Africa was the dominating power they would have done the exact same (slavery has always existed there aswell even to this day, and Sumer in Mesopotania around 3500 BC was the first recorded nation to do it).
So while I do aggree on the faults of many 'dead white guys', I think many should look at how well certain minority groups are treated in these 'non-white countries' compared to Western nations and they should reflect upon the past of what any nation in the entire human history has done. It's just how humans are, power makes drunk and instead of blaming Western countries for their past people should praise them for the progress they've made and how this positive change has influenced the world and how far we've come to the way of being a united species because we're all the same. ♥
