These engines were actually tuned for multifuel use, they can run on diesel, but the Army uses JP-8 jet fuel in all its vehicles to simplify logistics. We had a soldier accidentally put kerosene in one, and it ran fine
Kerosene is not that unusual it will actually run fine mostly in all vehicles, I once intentionally poured 10 liters of Kerosene on my vehicle empty fuel tank which can be considered very adhesive when not mixed with an already existent fuel but it ran totally normal.
Be careful. Not all of them were able to be run on JP-8.
I’m pretty sure kerosene is just a cleaner Diesel
Why is there a Dislike?

Retro reviews for life!
Id assume since its the Humvee. They're absolute pieces of garbage now compared to when they were first produced. I fucking hate working on them because all they do is sit int the motor pool and collect rust.
@Glasspack40 no shit I knew about that. My motorpool still has some canvas door humvees but the operators don't pics their shit, so ot sits and rusts away
I imagine it’s a Marine that invaded Iraq in 2003 in one of these.
Anyone that has driven one of these things on a long ass convoy
“Since a lot of today’s soldiers can’t drive a stick shift”
Even more so today!
So what?
@@acrabadacra3916 imagine stalling on a hill while taking fire lol
I mean you gotta shoot them tangos down while driving!
@@acrabadacra3916 Yep, definitely more practical
I agree an auto is better, I’m just saying the amount of younger people able to drive a stick is dwindling!
$23000 Is still good pricing even inflation adjusted, and it is well-worth the +$6K premium over the jeep ...
Man were they ever over-paying for jeeps at that point!
@@444mopar Yeah they were getting screwed the long way lol
The hummer is garbage, I’ve driven one, with a lot of gear. The hummer sucks.
Our military really modernized between 1979 and 1989 and this was part of it.
@Kunta Kinte I understand what you’re saying but remember that because of all that defense spending and modernization in the 80s, the first Gulf War in 90-91 was a game changer. I was a kid back then so I remember. We basically defeated a country with a significant military in, what, like a week? The world had never seen anything like that before.
@Kunta Kinte yeah I’m not talking about the politics of the Gulf War. I’m talking 100% military only. That war displayed the modern power of the US military very well.
@Kunta Kinte haha you know it is possible to talk about something in life and it not be about politics.
For sure, the Germans were replacing their 4x4 with the Iltis at the same time. We needed to move on from the M151 anyways.
Back when price was actually a consideration when buying equipment.
Really wow I my mind when Regans were destroying our economy creating debt that future generations have to suffer. Plus only the Clintons who reduced our debts after hw .so don't tell me
Someone forgot to take their meds.
@@hughjass1835 why because truth hurts
@@ekgcanadianenthusiast9961 the only thing that hurts is trying to read your horrible grammar. Your English teachers failed you horribly. Is your inability to write the English language clearly Reagan's fault too?
Price in today's dollars inflation adjusted: $57K.
@Akira S I know right? And that thing was an absolute spartan brick, the only real great Hummer is the H1 Alpha from 2006.
@Akira S I mean, interior build was straight up from the military Hummer (unlike the luxurious Alpha) but it isn't a bad vehicle, apart from that.
@Akira S No actually when the H1 first came out in the early 90s they where about 50k new
@Akira S Awesome!
Huh!
My stepdad was in the army in the late 80s and drove these and tested them.
There are still plenty of Humvees in service with the U.S. Military. I drove through Devens, MA a while back, and I saw a couple of Humvees on the street there
Yup they are still in service!
@@jonahzaslow7244 AM General Humvee is great and solid millitary veihcle
Crazy that they only just now started replacing these, although the newer models got the 4l80e with overdrive due to fuel economy concerns, and the up-armored variants got a turbo diesel
HUmmer is comfortable, resistent and solid vehicle
We have to thank Arnold Schwarzenegger for having GM to give us the civilian model Hummer in the 90s. If I can afford the fuel, I would love to have one in a army green color and chrome wheels just to hog the lane in Houston traffic.
@Akira S Better economy than a current Tundra 🤣
I'd get a 6.6 Duramax Alpha if I had the money, but I wouldn't want any of the previous versions.
RUclipsr Doug Demuro bought a early one several years ago (I'll come back to this). His had a GM 5.7L(350 c.i.) Gas V8. He said when the first started selling them they were not sure how people would feel about buying a diesel, so they offered a gas V8 too. I would like to see one of the gas powered ones engine/transmission swapped to a modern LS3/Allison 6 speed. I wonder how much the performance and fuel economy would improve.
Anyway, back to Doug. He used to have his viewers vote on what car he would buy and then keep it for a year and do a long term review. Then the next year have his viewers vote on his next car to buy and sell the one from the previous year. His one stipulation was that he couldn't lose a ton of money on the purchase and sale of the car, so typically all of them were used cars. He drove his bright yellow gas powered Hummer wagon over a Chrysler PT Cruiser. He also took it to a road course track day and it over heated, not enough to do damage, but enough to boil the coolant in the reservoir tank.
@@The_Opinion_of_Matt Just copy the GM HD truck powertrains. This vehicle needs HD parts.
@@The_Opinion_of_Matt Cool story.
Damn never knew the Hummer was from the 80's !!! Always thought it came out early 90's ????
Probably because most of us never saw them until Operation Desert Storm. Up until that point I use to think that the military was still using Jeeps.
70's technology. Check out what's now replacing the hummer. JLTV is a monster
Same
They started being sold to the public in the early 90s, I believe.
I still love and want an AM General Hummer. Pre-GM.
LOL! Even back in 84’ some soldiers didn’t know how to drive a manual transmission car.
And it's a 17 hr job just to replace a heater core in one lol.
Oh gosh lol
They have a heater?

This. This brings happiness.
Notice they never spoke of comfort? Lol cause it sucks, the heat comes from the engine,no A.C,& take a sunday news paper sit on it...thats your seat cushion. 2002-2004 when I was in & I swear that one of those humvees in the vid;I had rode in. Lol
I could use that military hummer to haul moonshine!
Now the L-ATV and M-ATV are even more massive.
Back then all guys, especially those joining up could drive a freaking stick.
I saw my first Humvee in 1989 at Kirtland AFB. There was nothing like it back then.
We had hummers in desert storm. Once these were kitted out they were beyond slow. If you took fire you got out and ran
Detroit Allison diesel - now I've heard everything
94 Galant pleeeeeeease!
The 4 wheel drive version?
I want one! 🔥
The first Hummer I recall seeing was in the movie " Dunston Checks in"
I can't believe the Hummer was built in 1984. I always thought it was the early 90s
Yeah. 1992 as a Hummer H1 civilian. Thanks to Schwarzenegger.
John: Speaks of the Humvee in terms of sophistication.
Hummer: “HULK SMASH!”
Love these toys.
Patton main theme was a nice touch
Awesome and super easy to drive vehicles. The naturally aspirated diesel is slow but reliable. The turbo diesel moves these down the road rather quickly for there weight. They are are a hoot off road for sure. Never seen one get stuck myself.
When he said "standard issue military jeep" it showed an AMC mightymax lol
Nah, that's an M151
@@1903tx yep an m151 mutt exactly right. Most of them got cut in half after they were removed from service the suspensions were so bad in them, the wheels would fold up under the vehicle.
M422 AMC mighty mite made for the Corps 59-62.

Thats NOT a phrase thats aged well 🤣
I hope that someday, the HUMMER will return in all of its glory. Yeah I understand there’s an all electric one coming soon, but the original H1’s with diesel engines were so awesome. The only reason we were able to buy one, is because Arnold Schwarzenegger said so.
H1 🙏🏾
Is that the price and weight of a chassis and drivers seat?
So cool
The ORIGINAL Hummer, ladies & gentlemen!!!! 4:35.........8 years later, you & the rest of the general public would finally get your wish, even if the price for the civilian version WAS SUBSTANTIALLY more than the military version's $23,000.
I love hummers.
We need the Lada Niva
I didn't know they called it a hummer all the way back in '85. And 23k price tag? they went 4x from there.
I want one.
Or I did, until we did a joint ex with the US, and I got to ride in one. Quite an awful ride.
Now the Iltis, that was a fun little ride.
A billion dollars for 55,000 cars, that's 18 grand per car.....2.6 billion in todays' money.
JLTV designed to replace the humvee is 300,000 dollars.
That old and we still use them today?
armored LLV
This is before the C.T.I.S.
$23k in 1984 is equivalent to just under $60k today meaning HUMVEE prices have significantly increased because the newest military versions were over $200k each. But the newest HUMVEE is a much better vehicle than the original that came out in 1984.
Murica! Fxck yeah!
Its Freedom on wheels!
....37 years old!
The engine is easy to replace? So, I guess service not much of an issue then, right?
*Its hilariously ironic now that the Hummer is an EV.*
the Jeep has 6 horizontal slats in the grill and not 7 vertical?? WAIT WHAT??? $23.000..I could have sworn I heard a higher price than that on a newer tv show,...and by a lot,..23k is cheap
the jeep they showed was actually a ford mutt
That's just under $68K in today's dollars.
These damn things still hold value. Complete shit box for $90k
Yes your shit box is a legend
@@ekgcanadianenthusiast9961 its not worth it though
@@chrishuber8930 just trust me sometings look worth less but once you own that's when you know how good it is
The civilian models trade for about 50k on average. More than Twice that if it’s one of the final year 6.6 alpha models. All of the ones in the video run you around 10k at auction. Good for 4 wheeling and farm work.
@@AK-lw2jw in true GM fashion their give best engine and interior in the wrong time and their kill it
So 37 years ago teenagers couldn’t drive a stick? I highly doubt that’s accurate. There were still plenty of cars and trucks from the 70’s and 80’s that came standard with a stick. I think the hummer was auto to simplify task for the driver and performing multiple task like shooting a gun or using the radio if needed. Not for lack of understanding a manual vehicle.
Not trying to sound sexist, but when I was in the Marines a lot of the support personnel were women or guys who grew up in the city and took the train or bus everywhere , and many of them joined and their MOS was Motor-T. Several of the women I saw who could drive a manual had difficulty pushing in the clutch repeatedly on Deuce-and-a-Half’s, and the city guys hadn’t really driven cars very much before joining. That’s why HMMWVs, 923s/925s, and HMMTs were all automatics.
$9,600 at auction
a Cummins 6 cylinder turbo diesel would have faired better. it has
much more power but a lot less thirsty than the Detroit Diesel engine.
Unfortunately, it won't fit because the 6 cylinder is too long. I've heard the Duramax that GM put in the H1 Alpha was a really tight squeeze.
LOL, Hummer is $60k/ea. after inflation. The Humvee replacement , the M-ATV is about $500k/ea.
What I want to know is why the US Govt was paying $45k/ea for those little bitty Jeeps?
@Modine Adjusted for inflation
2:56 And today people are offended when they have to turn a key 😂
Motorweek
If only the would have used a Cummins straight six turbo diesel as its powertrain
That engine didn't exist yet in a configuration for vehicles of this size.
Idk bout that because the 5.9 2 valve that was used in the older rams that motor was originally designed to be put much bigger vehicles..like 5500 medium duty dump trucks what not.. so just because that motor wasn't in full size HD pickups yet doesn't mean they couldn't have adapted it to power the humvee... I've seen Humvees that have a Cummins swap and they fit in the bay no problem. Theres plenty of room
@@jdubskiwright2380 it wouldn't have worked as the criteria the army mandated was a slanted radiator. The 6.2 Detroit was perfect for this application
Needs an LS swap
Drop an 8.1 into it!
@Akira S nice, I was thinking something crazy like a supercharged LS3 LOL
This is not the Mitsubishi Cordia
