When trail bikes started getting good it felt weird to ride them on the same trails as a DH bikes. Now to ride an older DH bike on those same trails feels funky. You ripped that trail on your DH beast, you got along like old friends.
Serious respect for the old 2 stage. I'd like to see some brand new tires thrown on and the suspension really gone through and see if you can make the 2 stage really dance, or maybe mullet 2 stage experiment? great content.
I loved seeing the 2 stage in action. I remember seeing the bike / frame at Ae Forest bike shop and loved the 2 shock design. Sketchy riding can be more fun than an easier faster bike.
Before I see the times my guess is pretty even on that course- it’s pretty tight without a lot of wide open high speed areas or big sweeping turns which is where I think the modern bike would shine. So let’s see.... ha, pretty good on that 2 stage. Being a guy who got his first mtb in 1990 and now rides a Bronson V3, I think what you said at the end is the biggest difference- the new bikes really take care of you more- to ride the same terrain at the same speeds on the old bikes you are on a razor’s edge and the slightest slip is a crash. Now at 50, where fatigue can get me and my skills then diminish, I appreciate that the Bronson says, “don’t worry sir, Ive got your back!!” Lol Great vid!!
I've been mtb'ing since the late 1980's (earlier if you count riding 10-speed road bikes on dirt bike trails), and I have to say the new 'modern geometry' bikes are a quantum level better than even the best bikes of even a few years ago. Probably the biggest change (and biggest improvement!) I've noticed and enjoyed in my entire mtb journey.....never been better than nowadays.
@@superdave6415 I never had any problems with my rim breaks; at least once I moved up to Pro Shift V-brakes (like having Hope nowadays). The original Dia Comp brakes that came with my 91 bike sucked. But decent v-brakes do quite well.
Savage vid once again Greg.... interesting to see how much bikes , components and geometry etc. Have evolved . The aul boxxer forks were the muts nuts in its day . Fair play 👍 looking forward to seeing/ following you and all our Irish riders when racing starts back.....best of luck !! 💪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
That's a great idea for a video, really enjoyed it Greg! If you had to put your finger on the main factor driving the difference in time, do you think it'd be the geometry changes or the suspension? I guess a bit of both. Made me pine for my GT Lobo!
I can only image what it'd be like to ride an old 26" bike again after a few years on a 160mm 29er enduro bike. Even the size-medium M16C 27.5" DH I had a few years ago bike felt small and cramped after riding modern trail bikes. I suppose one advantage of it feeling sketchy is a less skilled rider like myself would be less likely to push it past my ability level, whereas the modern enduro bike can get me going so fast that if/when things go wrong, they can go wrong in a big way.
Interesting video, particularly as I've just raced on my '98 Turner Afterburner which I hadn't rode for 11 years. I was reasonably competitive on it, much more than I thought I would be but definitely think I could have been a little faster on my 150mm trail bike.
The 2 shocks are meant to move sequentially. About 40-50% sag on the top shock - which btw is meant to nearly bottom out before the lower shock activates. For average weight rider about 90psi for top shock (and fast rebound damping) and about 180psi in lower shock (with 10-15% sag and more or slower rebound damping). That might improve the behaviour of the 2Stage if you haven’t done so already. Great video! 👍🏻
I would love to see a top bike brand try out a two suspension design like 2 stage maybe Santa Cruz or Specialized or Cannondale could do it one sus for light stuff the other for heavy
Great video! I'd be curious how recent you would have to go to find a DH bike more capable than a top-of-the-range 2021 enduro bike? I imagine almost all DH bikes pre 2014/15 would struggle right?
Great vid I did a similar thing on an Astrix but managed to size up which helped massively, was also loads of fun, was we all riding bikes that were too small for us back in the day?
I truly love the ignorance of people that didn't come up in the 26" era that think modern equipment and the abundance of readily accessible purpose built bike trails isn't the reason why there are so many good riders currently. I always try to explain that every generation can only progress to the level of the equipment and trails. They never get it. :) :) :) Don't even get me started on pre disk brakes or elastomer suspension. hahahahahahaha
...and most non-racers would never push the '09 beyond its limits. Having a new bike is great but it's important to remember that it's not some magic bullet that's going to make you a great rider. If you can only afford an older bike, buy it and then ride it like you stole it. You _will_ have just as much fun as you would on a new bike...unless you're one of those rider who thinks their personal time on a trail means anything to anyone else. If' you're a pro, make those sponsors buy you a new bike every year. If you're not, don't take out a second mortgage on your house. Just buy what you can afford and ride as hard as you can/want. Otherwise, that new bike will be an "old" bike before you even get it paid off.
That was sick Greg!!

Super cool, love seeing how retro tech stacks up.
The XC bike from 2041 is better in DH than the DH bike from 2021 .. change my mind ; )
there are no xc bikes in 2041
Right who gives a shit just get out and ride what ya have.....

To me the biggest improvements where disk brakes and suspension ever try to stop with muddy rims
I’m jealous. I ‘m still on my 91 Fat Yo Eddy. Can’t afford anything else. I have never ridden a full sus before. 😞
