  • Many 100-year-olds come from the southern Swedish town of Vittsjö. Niklas goes to see how the sisters Gunvor, 104, and Britta, 94, live. He also meets a young couple who have chosen an old-fashioned lifestyle.
In this food and lifestyle documentary series, internationally renowned chef Niklas Ekstedt explores the secret of living past the age of 100. He’s travelling to six of the world’s ‘blue zones’ - regions such as Sardinia, Costa Rica, and Okinawa in Japan, where unusually high numbers of people reach an advanced age - in a quest to find the recipe for a long and healthy life. Along the way, he befriends locals and gets to know them, joining in with their daily routines and discussing their approaches to life, food, and ageing. He also reveals different ways of living. For example, in Ikaria, Greece, he discovers a town which keeps the stress levels down by not keeping track of time. And, as you would expect from a leading chef, he also can’t resist sampling some of the local specialties in every place he visits.

It seems like what all these places have in common is community. They all eat different types of food that supposedly make you live longer but none of these foods seem to be the same. But they all have groups of people that come together and socialize. It seems like this is truly the reason why they live so long.

You’re right, also there is no golden apple for long life in terms of food. The key is variety.

My 90 year old grandma died about 15 days ago. She had started forgetting the present and kept talking about her family and friends from her childhood for about a month before that. So it's true that the closer you get to death your brain starts bringing up old childhood memories.

As I am following up on the whole series of Blue zone, I guess this one, got really deep into the question of longevity, aging , the discussions were amazingly mature to raise the question. Maybe the fact that there was not a language barrier, that made easy the dialogues. Thanks for those documentaries that are a true legacy for Longevity medicine.

WHO defines healthy ageing as “the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age.” Functional ability is about having the capabilities that enable all people to be and do what they have reason to value.

Are you vegan. Were your ancestors vegan? Because we have been omnivores for millennia. . The duck has been a domestic food animal from Asia to Europe since time in memorial. Actually I would have used the feathers too . Speaking of which I presume you don’t have real leather stuff either. Certainly it’s better than plastic and gmo tofu. P.S. the blood meal is amazing in the garden soil.

I have a grandmother close to 100 yrs. for the last 5 years she lays in a bed staring at the ceiling, defecates on her self, can't walk, is in dementia 90% of the time, uses the resources of six family members to keep her alive. Her husband died in 1977 quickly and quietly. I drink, smoke, eat what I want because I don't want to be a burden to anyone else just to say I lived to 100.

We live privileged lives. Meat has sustained people the earth over through good and bad times. It's easy to criticize when you've never experienced even one day of famine. But times are changing, we may soon see the wisdom of our elders.
