This is one of the most iconic songs of the 60’s, performed here almost 40 years after its recording. Gary Brooker, lead singer and pianist, passed in 2022, actually sounded even better than he did on the original recording. R.I.P. G.B.
I had the distinct privilege to play accompaniment 4 times for Procol Herum in the early seventies, twice at the Star Light Theater and twice at the Lyric Opera house a concert Pianist for the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra. Gary played piano but he didn't in concert then. I am proud to say I became friends with Gary Brooker and the band. I played a 9ft concert Grand Piano. Gary was a great friend, and his passing left a huge void that will likely never be filled. I miss him every day. Rest in Peace Gary, you're lose has made the music world all the darker.
Enjoyed your reaction! The lead singer of the band Procol Harum is Gary Brooker. He wrote the song. The lyrics were written by band member Keith Reid. Procol Harum was one of my favorite progressive rock bands from the '70s and '80s. Sadly, Brooker died in 2022 and Reid 13 months later.
This is so very awesome! He sang in this and sounded as good as when it was first put out. Check out the original and you will see what I mean. Gary Brooker passed away a few years ago. He will truly be missed! Love your reaction!
The song was originally released in May 1967 and quickly became one of the most iconic songs of the era. That summer was my first term at University and this song was part of the sound track of my life then. This live orchestrated version is stunning.
Well done for the rewind for the transition at the start. I've seen a lot of reactions to this and invariably they pause as the intro fades, totally understandable for a reaction video and the restrictions the make pauses needed, but for this track that transition really needs to be appreciated for how well it works and you instantly got that and did the rewind. Kudos
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever made ... I am one of the few who actually like the Album version better, because the tempo is a little bit faster and never stops rolling..(That is what I`m used to hear..).. in my point of view, It also gives a true/better feeling of the period it was released ..in May 1967.. one month ahead of what got to be remembered as the "Summer of Love .." //Peace for everyone !
This song was released in in the 60's and was great but this live version is better as it has more depth due to the choir and orchestra. Gary Brooker's voice has aged just like a fine wine. R.I.P Gary.
Regarding raspiness in a voice, a name that has to be added to those whom you mentioned, was Elvis -- he had the most amazing natural raspiness & occasional "crack" in his voice that made his voice quite unique & special.
I can think of only one other contender for best live performance, Heart's tribute to Led Zep's "Stairway to Heaven", Kennedy Center Honors. But--that is the only other contender
Peul McCartney wish he had written this, it was his wife's favourite. - from the Beatles you know. It was The Danish National Symphony Orchestra - and they are known for their work - especially their versions of filmmusic - ex. "The good, the bad and the ugly" - .The song is from the late sixties and went straight to no. 1 in the charts. I am 73 years old - and remember it from my youth - as a proud Dane who have witnessed a lot of these sorts of concerts in the summer in parks - as here - close to a castle - of which we have many. I prefer this version to the original - - ! You have a new subscriber - .Another suggestion would be Morricone as well: " Gabriel's Oboe" also written to a mega movie with some of the big stars - . This version should be with Henrik Goldschmidt (also danish - and a friend) playing with the Faroese Symphony Orchestra. It has been seen 5 mill. times here on RUclips - but I have never seen a reaction video. You may know the music - and you won't be disappointed - I can hear that you like that sort of music.
As a UK bloke in his 50s, who's loved metal all his life. And had strong connections to music, knowing people etc. No metal musician listens to metal all the time. They listen to everything. You dont become Maiden or Megadeth by listening to Led Zep all the time.Watch The Beatles Anthology. And then listen to the Best of George Formby & Best of Buddy Holly. Then youll see how it all comes together in a massive tapestry.
Watch the 1960s colour video and see the original group and get a taste of that magical era. This was one of the greatest songs at that time. One of so many great British (or English) groups at that time.
I remember hearing this song as a charting Top 40 single in 1967. I never got to hear Procol Harum live but I remember their hits “Conquistador”, “Shine on Brightly”, The Devil Came from Kansas” and the other Live in Denmark performance I love, “A Salty Dog” a tale of sailors, pirates and seagulls in the 1800s, also with full orchestra! If you liked Whiter Shade….
This is better than the original done in 1967! This song was a huge hit and was inducted in the Rock and Rolk Hall of Fame. Other great songs from this concert are Salty Dog and Conquistador!
Loved your reaction 💖... you really appreciate great music when you hear it 😌... when you get the chance... would like you to listen to the words of the song 💓😍...
Give yourself a treat: find the follow-on song CONQUISTADOR: ruclips.net/video/t-zti_qAHsA/видео.html WHITER SHADE was Procol's big hit in the '60s. They were part of the "Beatles Made Me Do It" reaction where artists felt they had 'permission' to try far more than being a simple guitar-rock band. Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson and a dozen others starting shedding their guitar-hero clothes and felt they were contributing to some wonderful renaissance. A couple of years later, CONQUISTADOR would be released and everyone was HIGH on Procol Harum again. The lead singer Gary Brooker was a major composer and instrumental arranger. Brooker would join George Harrison after the Beatles' breakup for concert performances, or in his stage band here or there. One recommendation: listen to the original recordings of both songs, and then re-listen to these Danish Royal performances to realize how far they've taken their 35-year-old originals.
🇨🇦 Procol Harum is a British Rock band made up of a Drummer, an Organist, two Guitarists and Gary Brooker on Piano ! The Danish National Symphony Orchestra consists of a Choir with over 70 members and the Orchestra of over 100 musicians, who regularly hold concerts (some outdoors) with special invited guests like this ! The original of this song was released in 1967 ! If you get a chance, you should watch that video from 1967 ! 🇨🇦
This concert was filmed at the Ledreborg Castle in Denmark w-the Royal Danish Concert Orchestra. There have been some misconceptions surrounding the meaning of the song - see ruclips.net/video/Pf73XwiZIFQ/видео.html for the interview w-composer/lead singer Gary Brooker & writer Keith Reid. Gary was founder of the band began in '67; he passed away in February of 2022, Keith passed in March of 2023. It is also said that Reid was "going to reveal the true meaning before he died" but he died before he explained anything. Many people believe it was about a drunken one-night stand. Contrary to popular belief, the song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach but was inspired by & does reference Bach's "Sleepers, Wake!" and "Air on the G String!" As per Reid, the line "as the miller told his tale" is definitely not a reference to Chaucer's Miller's Tale. Reid has repeatedly explained he had never read The Canterbury Tales when he wrote A Whiter Shade of Pale. Procol Harum is said to be the name of a friend's cat. The name is a mis-spelling of the Latin phrase Procul Harun (roughly meaning "far beyond these things"), or that it was a corruption of Procellarm, a vast ocean on the Moon. In Roman Times Vestal Virgins were priestesses and acquired their name after Vesta. the goddess of the hearth and home. It was their duty to not only keep the home fires burning but to also remain a virgin for 30 years. AMAZING SONG - AMAZING GARY! THE COURT CASE: Matthew Fisher, a founding member and the organist of Procol Harum, won a High Court battle over who wrote “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” He played organ on the 1967 recording of the hit, which was long credited to lead singer Gary Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid, and Fisher argued that he wrote the distinctive organ melody. And so on December 20, 2006, Justice William Blackburne ruled that Fisher was entitled to 40 percent of the copyright. Fisher had wanted half (50%) but the court decided that lead singer Gary Brooker’s input was more substantial.
Hi , can you react to a family band from Philippines called Missioned Souls, try thier cover of Separate Ways by Journey..this family band is so good and pure of talent.❤
Maybe check out Simple Sister when Robin Trower was in the band. This is their career highlight song but there is more. The original video from the sixties captured the psychedelic scene from the time
Certainly Gary Brooker has a very different vocal style than the recalled Joe Cocker or Pete Siger. Perhaps having a beard influenced this opinion. A woman listening to Brooker's voice threw in that he sings similarly to Kenny Rogers. Of course, this is also untrue. Rogers has completely different vocals. But again... that beard, and that gray hair. I'd already put Brooker's voice more in the cipher with Eric Clapton or Peter Gabriel. I will say this, Gary Brooker has an exceptionally charismatic voice, as if modeled on Ray Charles, but not so bluntly, nevertheless listening to him, you get the impression that perhaps we are hearing a black singer. He has a slight hoarseness in his voice, some pained tones, etc.
You would be negligent not to listen to them performing "Conquistador" from the same concert. You also mentioned liking to watch live music videos. Wellll how about watching Three Dog Night, live from 1975 performing "Eli's Coming". This version starts a lot differently than the album, and all three members take a solo. I will say that being from 1975 the video quality is lacking, but their voices are not. Great reaction to this video. Peace, Bill.
I dont think youve done any Genesis yet, unless you are already familiar with them.... If not, I would love to see your reaction to them.... Live Wembley 1987 Mama. Well, " that voice" is borrowed very heavily on the voice of " the genius" Ray Charles ( not that many younger listeners would realise that ). P.S. The reactor mentioned that Gary had a similar voice to Joe Cocker and, of course , Joe was really channelling ( or ripping-off ?) the great Ray Charles.
And that was years after this song. It is head-shaking to hear someone say, "This (original singer) sounds like (years/decades later) singers." Uhhh... NO. Fix the timeline. They sound like HIM. And almost never AS WELL.
Getting seriously sick of these grifters pretending they've never heard this song before. This loser actually said "that was a really nice introduction" before he acted amazed by the initial lyrics. Pathetic.
You're a little nervous about reacting to music? A little nervous about passing the Bar Exam, sure. A little nervous about your test results from your doctor, totally. A little nervous about doing well on a job interview, absolutely. Dude maybe listen to your videos before posting them😅😅😅

Fantastic, timeless performance. Everything was on point. Live, no autotune. Crazy good

My husband and Gary were friends from junior school. He was a gentleman and was humble to the end. ❤
CLÁSSICO!!!! HINO!!!!
Imagine this being performed in a cathedral!! This version is better than any others, hands down. Very moving, emotional performance!! 💯❤️

music and vocal combination that goes straight to the soul. Beautiful

This song gives me goosebumps
Best live performance of a pop song, ever? I’m going with yes! Loved your reaction to it!
I was 19 in I967,*Gary Booker ,is the singer,we lost Gary Two years ago,to cancer! He was a genius,he will be missed!

Nice reaction.
One of the greatest performances and environments of all time.
Amazing, so many years after the initial recording.
May12, 1967 - the man singing is one of the composers Gary Brooker.
I was 16 ehen this came out and he sound's just as great now as he did back in the day🎉🎉
At the time of that performance the song was 39 years old 😊
I’m Danish and I was there. If you hear a thump, it’s my nickers hitting the ground. I’m so happy this is anonymous
Amazing pick! Keepem coming!
