To add clarification, the worn timing chain isn’t what is causing our issue. Improper timing is but we discovered the chain has stretched and it makes sense to replace it and the guides when we are fixing the timing.
The only issues I've heard the chain designed Honda engines have are tensioner related. 160k on my old rsx and had to replace the chain guides and tensioner. Love Honda engines but no engine comes without some issue. Luckily the k series is easy to replace all that on.
Replace the intake cam sprocket while you’re at it. It’s rattling on a cold start.
Chain streched could skip a tooth.
Good luck with it. Looking forward to those numbers!
Might be a silly question but is it possible to install those camshafts backwards? (I.e. intake on exhaust side and vica versa)?
Things happen... glad you post fails and issues as well as the good stuff... too many edit this stuff out so it all looks simple and great in the car modifications world where in reality this stuff happens... just don’t get demoralized, you are not alone in these mistakes and issues.
I had a literal heart attack when he cranked it and I heard that sound, I expected the worst but I'm happy it was just something you left in the engine bay. You got me.
Yeah you can hear it at 8:30 rattling it's brains out. Holy crap that tensioner is dead and she's skipped a tooth!
That manifold looks hot on there! Once the timing is sorted, that thing will rip!
I'm not sure I can adequately express how good it is to see a not perfect episode. Thank you. Loud Fast & REAL.
Dave is my hero, because we are so a like. "burn it". Been there so many times.
Damn big lesson learned. If the chain comes off and the engine is old just replace it
replace everything accessibly in that area, especially going that deep
Not race related but shoutout to DP for the weight loss. It's really starting to show on camera. What ever starving metric you're going by keep it up!
I think everybody has left a ratchet on the crank a time or two lol
With extensions, broke right off too. 😵
Nope
I've been in that frustration like Dave has, many times before. Ironic thing is that I'm sure that Dave will wake up early, or won't be able to sleep, and be motivated to research exactly what it needs to solve the issue, and the project will be that much better, than running the engine with a loose timing chain and chain guides at the track, so a much happier ending in the near future is coming!
You guys need to make a shirt about making jam. Something like "Speed Academy, making jam since xxxx" would be pretty cool
Spread Academy...
That would be dope.
Maybe an image of an accelerator pedal pointing at a DYNO graph and the line on the DYNO is stretched out letters "JAM" Making the J and A part of the HP curve and M being the torque curve.
i love that you guys share the highs and the lows of building cars!
Edward Norton is a car tuner these days? Man has skills!
New Rule: Replace worn out OEM parts on engine out rebuilds/mods! The 2JZ and now the K swap? This isn't how jam is made!
Looks like they install engines and cross fingers lol
When you guys removed and installed the new cams, you hung the timing chain to the hood in hope that the chain would not lose its position to the main sprocket. I am afraid that is where you may have lost your original timing position.
Golden Eagle makes also rwd manifold for K:s. I have one installed on my miata.
You need to get a screw driver in cylinder 1 to verify TDC because Honda marks are known to be not accurate.
Good thinking, and it's free to check TDC!
Great videos as always gents, can't wait to see what it makes after it's sorted!
just got off work, time to relax to speed academy.
Before putting a K series in a car it is always a good idea to install new timing chain and tensioner, also the engine will make more power with new timing chain because the chain streches.
Was no one else concerned with the horrendous noise on the first initial startup before the dyno? When they sorted the startup map, sounded like bad news
Thats just valve noise until oil reaches the head. Common when you dissemble everything.
That’s a good looking engine bay, looks clean 👍👍
Glad to be subbed to this channel! Great stuff! Inspired by you guys!
nice to see I'm not the only one that has problems with timing belt/chain alignments!
Nick is that K series tuning guru 👍
K swap featuring Edward Norton :D
Lmao
Yup!! Sounds about right! When I did the hg job on my k24a2 I replaced all the guides and chain
Damn it! Upload time is so early I forget to watch after work. Good thing it shows up on my home screen.
Ahh, bummer... But at least nothing blew up (as we know worse things can happen)!
Still love staring at those new Wilwoods 😍
Aww bummer. The 240 sounded so sad at the end of the video. Best of luck fixing this issue.
It’s so cool that this Nissan Silvia has had S2000, Acura RSX, and Acura RDX parts while using a Honda motor!
Its reasonably easy to loose crank timing using the bungee cord to bonnet method as soon as it slacks or the guide on tensioner side might not sit on chain right when put tension back on. Better off doing it properly and changing the chain as they all have that stretch at 150kmiles anyway or chuck a chain crank guide on while your at it
Thanks for this....real world experience .
Hearing the clunking sound after you fiddled with the timing chain without proper tools and without taking the front cover off, I expected the worst
Dave left to go get some matches and petrol🤣🤣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I truly appreciate the transparency with the successes and fails along with B roll and blooper reel stuff. It doesn’t hurt that both Pete and Dave have great personalities and as far as I know are great role models for the younger kids coming into the car scene. You do a great job. Thank you.
It's amazing what Honda aftermarket makes. BMW has some great non-M engines with much greater displacement and torque than Honda from 2.8 to 3.2L, but low horsepower. But aftermarket doesn't give a damn, if you're not driving an S engine from M division you're not getting larger throttle bodies, intake manifolds, oil coolers, individual throttle bodies or anything.
I'd forgotten about that Stack dash.. achingly cool!
I feel for you guys. Just a thought, could this be because of the 50 degree or whatever vvt gears? I dont think this was missed, but faced with doing the job again, you just want to cover your bases. Love the channel guys and you are just having some bad luck. Im so excited for your jdm hero cars!
Such an easy fix! You guys will be back in no time!
always a great video pt and dp. love following along. wishing the best
Keep at it guys, it'll be worth it in the end!
You got to love a K swap 😍
Luckily you guys didn’t put any observation windows in the block
You know when would have been a good time to replace the chain the guides on a used motor? 2 years ago when you had this hole motor apart and decided to reuse the chains and guides and was playing with timing in the video using a thumbtack to hold the tensioner.... but hey reused used parts hold up great.... Cut corners and they have come back to get you guys multiple times now on this channel. But hey at least there more content showing us how not to do things.
Wow guys dam that sks balls! That’s another reason why it was making not as much power before.
In the pharmacy, we call burning the place down "Plan G".
That's hotrodding. Great looking car, and hopefully it'll be all sorted out soon.
9:49 Why would anybody choose 236 "Using price is right rules" when the previous person choose 237? 😐
cam timing is sooooooooo important, my valve lash was off by 3-4 thou, and i lost 6 degrees of cam timing bc of it
This was disturbing to watch, all hope and deams despairing right out of his eyes.
The Evo and this car have left the chat
I often feel Pete and I have similar car ocd’s which is why I’m baffled at why that beautiful muff is still hanging so low! It’s not boosted or going to get hot enough to melt the bumper so let’s move that bad boy up an inch! Maybe it just looks worse on camera. Such a sick setup this car has!
Trust me Ive tried, it will not go any higher without completely cutting and moving the hangers!
@speedacademy the Chains! The Chains!!!
fighting little gripes like these makes me want to just go with a model 3 performance and be done with it.
The k swap s14 looking like a dream car 🔥🔥
No worries boys. RUclips misery = clicks! I’m sure you’ll get it sorted.
What’s up with the tiny injectors? Gave up on the turbo plan?
He's probably getting older now and worried about fuel economy. lol
Always great content! Shout out from Saskatchewan lol
Eager to see some power on this next video
Thought for a little your where getting tuned by Edward Norton. Lol 😂 😂 😂
The disappointment on Dave's face was clearly in evidence!
The timing is most likely the smoking gun here but what’s the overlap on the cams? Bigger cams with some overlap will actually drop your static compression ratio compared to baby cams. They’re the giants on top of the bean stalk and not the plebeians below it sorta speak lol. Hope the issues iron out! Looking forward to the JAM 👌🏼👌🏼
I know i know - internet technician here. But slow down before you go replacing the chain. No way the chain stretched enough to allow 100psi cranking pressure loss over night. Start with properly timing the engine. Also, remember if the aftermarket cams are installed with a retarded installed centerline (usually done for more top end power) you will lose cranking compression (not 100psi, but maybe 20-30). But all this is moot unless you’ve done a compression test on the engine before the camshaft swap.
Read the pinned post. 😁
wouldn't the phenolic spacers help with intake temps?
Great suggestion. That's what I love about the car community. We can all learn what helps combustion chamber engines in general and take what we've learned to make the best performance modifications.
It helps to a degree but also increases the torque load by extending the intake mass away from the block. The non ridged nature of it allows harmonic frequencies that can cause things to come loose or break
They do help but they warp easily
Not really a thing on FI stuff
oh well...more new parts and for a better motor
I bought a ktuned throttle body and it sticks all time time
Undo the butterfly bolt holding where the cable hooks to tb..hold it because the spring can come apart.
Turn the part 360degres..rebolt it
You will tight the spring this way..wont stick and you will have firmer pedal feel
Sounded good.
That adjustment will suck when it does stick I’m pretty sure that throttle body just like all the rest will stick eventually
I'm with ya guys on the fixing-things-then-finding-out-its-still-broken kick, I just replaced my mt82* on my ecoboost mustang and I dont trust it :/ Its just been replacing parts cause I need to, not cause I want to, takes the fun out of it. Same thing happened with my e92, put so much time into her fixing her and then she broke again. Cars are like an one sided abusive relationship and its really discouraging sometimes to get back out in the shop. We always come crawling back with more parts though. Carcaine. 😩
*Yes, I know mt82 is crap, I got an upgraded mt82. And yes I know about the lawsuit, already talked to the lawyers and since I didnt take it to the dealership for my repairs I probably wont be included for anything.
And that’s when you rethink playing with cars.
We need to see STI Killer video guys
Hope the valves are okay.. should be if only a few teeth.
I had a engine timing belt slip 7 teeth, and bend all 16 valves.
Interesting that both K engines have garbage timing chain guides in a 240 lol.
He wasn't holding the throttle wide open when doing the comp test....you'll never get a good comp number with the butterfly closed.
Just add a turbo now to make all the mods work properly 😁
u need to higher up ur compression ratio when put on the bigger cam shaft.
Ur compression is lost bcz of the intake valve closing more late than smaller cam.✌️ 2cent
Bring back BADA**2000 plz
Nick looks and sounds like Edward Norton
God Bless hope all is well!
can’t believe with all that money that goes into that car a timing chain doesn’t get replaced?!
Atleast the exhaust sounds good lol
Why the injector change? Why go smaller??
Where do you guys pick up your Wilwoods from? That grey is perfect, I want a set for my Forester!
Core4motorsport
Very interesting swap, but sad to see the numbers. Lesson learned and this is coming from a ex Honda Guy.
How sure are we that Nick isn’t related to Edward Norton?
Just curious if you guys took compression measurements for the other cylinders? Also, if you did were they the same pressure? How bad would timing have to be off to bend a valve? Hoping you guys find the gremlin behind this one! Cheers fellas!
Yes we did. All the same. Timing would have to be off quite a bit to bend valves. It would read almost zero compression if the valves were bent.
Why not ITB’s?
does the extra long aftermarket chain tensionor not work for this one?
Looks like it needs some porting
Tuner looks like Edward Norton.
I need to know what body kit is on this car
Check valve lash
Anyone know what racing dash that is?
We want the r34 and supra 😰
Race gears and gasoline boys
Looks like it’s a tooth off on the intake cam.
Doh!
Wrong swap-itus
When your k24 sounds like a Subaru flat popper your know something is wrong.
