Here is the first and only (that I know of) detailed instructions on how to install/change the front suspension on a Porsche Boxster 986.
It was the first time I've ever done it, so you can get a glimpse of what it will be like if you want to do it. But you'll get the advantage of seeing the correct steps as well as the wrong ones. They are part of the learning process too!

Hi mate. I've been watching from the start and I can say now in 2022 you progressed so much. I've always done my own work on cars. So watching is painful at the start lol. But you have really come along now. This is not a bad criticism at all. It just proves the more you do on your own car the better. Because watching your videos now. Is a pleasure. Well done my friend. Kind regards Bob Rose Northampton cosworth...uk
+Bob Rose haha thanks, and thanks for your continued viewership 😉
Update on this. Got done with the front suspension. All I had to remove was the sway bar (completely), remove the caliper (not the brake pads), and loosen (but not remove) the bolt of the lower control arm that connects to the chassis. This allowed me enough movement to remove the strut (top first). Much easier than the rear struts. Of course, be sure to remove the electrical wires. Thanks again, m8! And good luck to anyone trying to diy. Glad to be done! Time for a proper drink. 😎
+Jack Rodriguez thanks for reporting back and congrats 🍻
Help Me DIY thanks! Your videos are very helpful. I may tackle some of the other projects next. I would like to change the color of the lights of the dashboard...never did care for the amber. Maybe some ultra bright white or red like my paint. Maybe you could do a video on that! 🙏
Jack Rodriguez thanks! No plans on dash lighting now. If you do it though, film it and send me the video and if it’s detailed enough I’ll put it on my channel 😉
Great video that looks like a hell of a project I know I’ll have to do it someday but I’m dealing with my immobilizer at the moment
+Sean Denny thanks! Good luck with that immobilizer!
I liked this video after the "coffee, reading, youtube" comment :) That's how we all learn.
+Gary L I know I do!
you all probably dont care but does anyone know a method to log back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid lost the login password. I appreciate any tips you can give me.
@Caiden Timothy instablaster ;)
Great video, thanks for doing it. I’d invest in some impact sockets. The sockets you are using just grab the corners of the nuts or bolts and could lead to stripping the corners off.
+minermarcus I agree! I’ve been building up the tool and garage arsenals 😎
Thank you so much for this video. "Winging it" helped us all see how to overcome issues that may arise. Speaking of which, what happened to your sheared bolt??
+Brian M you’re welcome! I agree, I don’t like videos that make it look super easy just to get into it and find all the hard parts they skipped over. So I try to show it all.
I finally (months later when replacing the pads/rotors) drilled out that bolt that was sheared and re-tapped the hole.
great video content
+luckyfarru thanks 🍻
Hey, man. Thanks so much for making these videos. It’s really a great help. I did the rear first and removed the rotors from the axel before removing the strut. It seemed easier than trying to remove the strut with the rotor. Is this not possible on the front suspension? Thanks again!
+Jack Rodriguez you’re welcome! Seems like it should be possible on the front as well 🤷♂️. Report back and let us know if you do something differently.
Copy that. I think it’s easier to do it your way. The front doesn’t have an axle that goes into the rotor, so it probably makes more sense to remove the strut without removing the rotor. Not crazy about having to remove the steering rack...do you think the front struts are generally easier to replace than the rear? I’ll let you know when I’m done haha 😆
Jack Rodriguez honestly I don’t remember, but I do think I had more issues with the rear.
Hello great video does it really transform the car completely? I feel alot of people just repeat what others say vs what they FEEL. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated
+basketball798 it makes it feel more like a sports car. I did this early on so I didn’t get to drive the car much without the new suspension but then I drove a friend’s with stock setup and could really appreciate mine a lot more afterwards.
Video TOP

Thanks for posting this. Doing a similar project, but installing the M030 ROW suspension (includes coils, shocks, sway bars) on my 2000 986S, plus I am replacing all suspension components (all hardware, coffin arms, trailing/track arms, toe arms, tie rod ends, sway bars, bushings, links, plus the transmission mounts as an added bonus). Why didn't you use your torque wrench for tightening those suspension components?
PS - I also have the QuickJack, also purchased with a discount from Costco, and it's already been great for seasonal wheel/tire swaps, oil change, water pump replacement, undercarriage wash, draining/flushing/replacing power steering fluid, etc.!
BTW, M030 ROW is also Bilstein (but Porsche-branded) -- general consensus is that your new setup or the one I have are the two best bolt-on suspension upgrade options for these vehicles -- I just didn't want to fiddle with "adjustability"! Cheers.
Also, recommendation to everyone out there watching this -- get a spring compressor for $20-$30 from Amazon or Advanced Auto or similar... ...and use your torque wrench to torque down the suspension components to the correct torque values.
+Yosef Allam The only reason I didn’t use a torque wrench was because I took it to a mechanic immediately after installing to have it aligned and asked them to do it all for me as they adjusted everything.
+Yosef Allam good to know! 😁
Great video! I'm stepping through it as I tear down my own suspension. But I have to say that I really covet that lift you're using. Mind sharing the brand and model?
Jeff Maxwell yeah it’s a QuickJack. Got mine at Costco when it was $100 off
Glad it’s helping. Hope you subscribe ;)
your cabin air filter is in wrong direction for airflow
+luckyfarru you are correct, good eye!
Did you have any specific symptoms that the shocks were done ? Mine is a 99 2.5l and it has a stiff ride, but I have no other symptoms.
+Francois Ducharme the original owner told me that the dealership told him that one of the shocks was leaking and needed to be replaced. Nothing I noticed while driving though. But these made a huge difference!
Help me DIY HI, is the ride less harsh? Like smoother ? I am looking for some comfort and less jittering with mine.
Francois Ducharme these particular shocks are actually a little more stiff, but makes the car feel more planted and nimble. If you just want comfort you may want to replace yours with new stock shocks.
My 99 boxster base just started leaking from the front right strut.....Guess I'll have to dive in head first and get to replacing both fronts.
7:11 The newer clips are not easier to remove, but they are obviously more durable.
1 out of 2 is still 50% better I guess. 😆
Yeah my 99 has the newer metal clips and you have to get one off first then take a look at how to get under that little lever and then it comes off pretty easy.....There is definitely a nack to it that you have to figure out.
Bro!! You need air tools
+marc quintin 😂 coming soon!
Wow man, you really made it hard on yourself. That’s not the way you are supposed to remove that.
A N Through my research this was the best way I found. If you have suggestions on a better way to do part of it please share to help those watching!
Lol I stopped watching when he was trying to remove the brake pads to get the caliper off. 😅
tediously slow. I had to change the channel.
+Tom Silver it’s easy to fast forward, but it’s impossible to see what is skipped and not shown.
