Suspension work on this 2001 Boxster S.
Front and rear strut and spring replacement.
This car has been lowered too low for regular driving. We pull out all the old work. The springs are super soft and low. We get a matched set of struts and springs to bring it back up. It is still a still lowered stance, just not too low!
I know we do not have the other videos on the brakes and wheel alignment out there yet. I just chose to do this one first, the other videos will follow soon.

Glad I watched this again. For the rear struts other videos showed undoing the axle from the transmission side
glad it helped
Kurt
Excellent procedure explanation. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it

GREAT Video , Thank you !
Glad you liked it!
Kurt
Very nice job. You make it look easy. I couldn’t find the brake video though
Glad it helped, sorry the brake video is on its way should be this week...
thanks for watching

Best descriptive vid on this subject I've seen, not that I've done it yet except tuning forks and coffin arms which is easy. Have you done a vid on coolant tank replacement tank Kurt?
no not yet on the coolant tank replacement.
Thanks
Kurt
That strut pinch bolt. I wish mine came out that easy. No chance. If you're in there, grease that bastid thing. SIOM.
I used B6 sport struts, new top mounts and bump stops!
Yes they can be a pain in the ass to get out. However I would not grease them going back in
Such a great and detailed video !! Thank you for making the effort to film those video.
I have a question, what are the torque specs for the half shaft axle on the hub side and on the transmission side ? I have an 06 Cayman
The axle nut is 460 NM and the inner bolts for an M10 are 80 NM
Kurt
Very good information and well explained. My question is you did not need to undo the axle from the transmission or the axle nut from the hub to drop the hub? I have seen other videos where they do one or the other it appears that you did neither. This seems much simpler, keep up the good work, and I am a subscriber.
You can if you want take out the entire rear axle, but I dont. It does make for a slight juggling act in snaking out the old strut and then installing the new one, but in the long run saves time and money.

Tremendous Channel and informative (and entertaining) videos. I'd like to ask if the various issues the car had were related to the owner having had lower springs installed on stock shocks. Should he had had the foresight to change the strut as well as the lowering springs at the same time ? I replaced my springs with H&R but my garage didn't advise changing the shocks at all and now after numerous hours of labour cost I have a car that drives really firm and is a horror on some poor quality roads. I look forward to your thoughts on the question I posed. Thanks in advance.
Yes ideally the original owner of this car should have installed the correct struts along with the springs. However, it has been my experience that most owners and shops dont seem to think the whole job through. A vehicle is a marriage of engineered components all designed to work together. When one part is changed its effects will ripple throughout the entire vehicle. And yes, a lot of the cars problems and issue were do to mismatched parts.
Kurt
@@klassikats thanks for your prompt reply Kurt. I guess I will be going to a different shop to get the car back to stock (I still have the original springs) or contemplate the new shocks to ensure the lowered springs are working with appropriate components.
Do you not need a spring compressor to remove the front top strut mount? I have a 2003 986 S with standard suspension and need to change the top mounts, bump stops and dust sleeves. I just want to be prepared correctly for the job. I have been in Volkswagen service for over 45 years so am capable of the repair.
Keith,
With standard springs you will need a spring compressor.
Thanks
Kurt
@@klassikats Thanks, I thought so 👍
At 38:30 when Klassik Automotive Training School was replacing the strut is possible to see that the CV joint boot is completely torn apart. I was wondering how he didn't noticed that. Does anyone have any idea?
Yes, on that car, the boot had split a long time ago, and the joint had become damaged due to debris entering the joint. The axle needs to be replaced and not just have a boot installed. Unfortunately, at this time, the owner could not afford the cost of the new axle. On a 20-year-old car, work will always need to be done. However, sometimes you need to prioritize based on the owner's budget to what gets done and when. In this case, this car also needs a transmission rebuild. So we made the choice to leave the axle as it is not a danger to the operation of the vehicle and replace it when the transmission is out for repair.

The 986 looks so much better lowered like this. Whatever happens with the tires is worth the extra wear
yes i agree
My rear tyres only last between 10,000km and 15,000km and I have even tyre tread wear throughout. It’s because of the weight - The engine mass is right there. Imagine if it was cast iron? 😆😂🤣 The rear tyres wouldn’t last 8,000km. The front tyres last at least 30,000km plus because there isn’t much weight over them.
What are the torque specs for the sway bar drop link?
45 Nm
Thanks for watching
Kurt
So for rear strut replacement no need to release the drive shaft or loosen either inner or outer? Maybe I missed a bit but others show they do.
No I dont but I cant say what others do.
Kurt
@@klassikats thanks for the tip as reduces the work.
At 16:16 you put the washer upside down, the concave washer should face downward at the bottom and upward at the top.
Already answered this in our other comments. But yes in the video the washer was flipped and unfortunately we did not show us correcting it.
Thanks
Kurt
Sounds like a bit of an aussie accent creeping through? Good info mate.
thanks
Kurt
I’m getting a bit of English accent, southern US with high notes of Australian? Where the hell have you lived!!!??
In all of those places, Good Ear...

What brand of springs were the red ones?
Sorry its been too long since we did this job and I just cant remember what spring we used with this.
Kurt
What strut from Bilstein did you use?
Hi Layton, thanks for watching.
The Bilstein numbers are 22-113313 front, and 22-113320 rear. M030-B4 Sport Suspension
On Amazon, I found the front, amzn.to/37yHXxW
But the rear I found was a B8 for lowered springs,

@@klassikats wow. Thanks for doing the research to help me out. God bless. I’m subscribing now.
Sure you put the bottom washer the right way?
when I first dropped it on it was upside down, we reversed it just looks like that take did not make the video.
A branick spring compressor is worth every dollar, how about helping this guy out branick?
Yes I agree had one for many years in my shop. Unfortunately it did not make the move from the old shop in CA to AZ
Thanks
