    You might not like the 80's clothing styles, but I sure miss it. I loved the padded shoulders that made one's waist look smaller. I'm not talking foot-ball style, but padded enough to look elegant. As a matter of fact, there are still some blouses that I still have with shoulder pads that I still wear today. I've never been one to follow the 'style' as it changes more often than our seasons so I wear what I like and feel comfortable in wearing.

    • @plan4life
      @plan4life 2 года назад +3

      I totally agree. Small shoulder pads not only looked sophisticated, but felt so glamorous too. That was sure a fashion era. Today, the more trashy you look the more fashionable. That’s why fashion no longer interests me.

    • @boraanna_
      @boraanna_ 2 года назад +4

      i don't feel like shoulder pads are that out of style these days, just a few months ago, when i was part-timing in a clothes store (fast fashion, so all the "new and trendy" styles) and there were quite a bit of blouses and jackets with shoulder pads. a lot of old styles are quite in fashion right now it seems

      Even thing old always comes back into style. there's nothing wrong with shoulder pads, it's the only way a strap for a purse will stay on my shoulder and not fall off. :) I mean come on/ they are trying to bring back the 70's clothing. Honestly I don't see anything wrong with having the same style that Princess Diana had making it into the 2000's. Like I said. Everything old always comes back into style and then it's called retro or boho and even vintage. In fact I saw Princess Catherine wearing polka dots to wimbledon. even though they resembled tennis balls, they were still dots and I didn't even notice that they were tennis balls until someone pointed it out to me. I just thought they were dots.

I've heard the same narrator on other videos and really feel this is part of the research preparation required to put out this type of content. I'm not at all advocating that an English or "British" accent (what is that, anyway?) be affected, but Americans would be so put off by pronunciation of Oregon as OrryGONE, Maryland as Mary-Land to rhyme with Disneyland or aluminium instead of aluminum.] It also bothers me when trends like polka dots are dismissed out of hand when in 2021- 2023 I've seen no fewer than THREE versions of the coffee/cream polka dot dress from the polo scene in Pretty Woman for sale. Dissing the 80s when you are praising an 80s/90s icon whom you admit still has fashion relevance is bonkers and makes the author look a little jejune and arrogant. Sorry. Been bottling this up.

      Additionally the royal family , especially in 20th century and now, don't like to wear things once and toss. They want to look like they are not spending taxpayer money, etc. foolishly. Many of the clothes on the children, for example, are hand me down between siblings and even from parent to child, etc. Actually aristocracy and old money generally have those values. It's new money that is gauche by flaunting, wasting and being flashy only having new and not reusing.

    I am one of those who sewed for myself. Even when I had the money to buy as nice as I wanted, nothing on the rack appealed to me and it never fit right! When I took my first fitting class in sewing, our instructor said after this class, we would never buy off the rack again. She was right.
    Back in those days, I sewed almost all of my clothing. I picked fabric and colors that I loved and styles that showed off my nice figure with my long waist and usually sewed things with real waistlines. I loved wide belts! I never went out that I did not get compliments from people which was very nice. Frankly, I am now thicker through the middle, many pounds heavier, and in my seventies as well as my life style changed, but there is a big part of me that misses those beautiful clothes and the wonderful satisfaction of how well they fit and how good they looked. The rare times I go clothes shopping now, I am soooo disappointed at the choices. I'd rather re-wear the same things.
    I really do admire those who find styles and colors that look good on them and wear them well (and even often). No one must spend huge amounts of money on clothes to look good - one must, however, choose carefully.

      I have developed allergies to a lot of material - I can only wear cotton. I wish I could sew - but I really didn't like using a sewing machine in a family where my momma, little sister and Grandmother used an electric sewing machine and Nanny used a treadle machine back in the 1970s'. My folks even bought a pattern and fabric of my choice and I paid my little sister to make it! Momma made my wedding dress. I have found some cotton skirts with matching sweaters and I have about 8 blouses and some sweaters with multiple colors to coordinates. I have several pairs of jeans and some t-shirts. I have a small selection of shoes and sandals that work too. I pore over the internet for choices. Luckily I don't work anymore - I needed suits as a Sales Asst to a stock broker. I love Princess Diana's clothing - I used to think she was like a living Barbie!

    • @GlennaVan
      @GlennaVan 2 года назад +3

      @@amypagekaviani5661 I am so sorry about the allergies. It is so difficult to find pure cotton clothing now. I sewed partly out of necessity and, in the early years of my marriage, repurposed a lot of things others gave me. I had a sheath dress made from a cafe curtain my MIL gave me - it looked better on me than the window. Much more recently, our garden club requested we all wear hats at a spring meeting but with flowers. I had no flowered hat but found a flat sheet at a thrift store that was beautiful and made a sun hat. It was funny because I received so many compliments on it. One member said she used to have sheets like that - I told her it might be one of her sheets! Though I like buying new fabric, I also enjoyed the challenge of making over something else into something entirely different.
      Well into my marriage, I was able to buy a Viking 6030 sewing machine - anyone who has had one will tell you that was top of the line. That was 1974 and it is still going strong! There have been literally thousands of miles of thread go through that machine through the years.
      We all have our interests and talents. It's good I can sew because I cannot sing a bit, play a musical instrument, and cannot paint or even draw. Some times it takes a while to find our special talent but we all have them if we give it a chance. Frankly, buying clothes and compiling a good wardrobe is a huge talent itself.
      I loved the dresses, etc., that Carol Burnett wore on her variety show at the opening - so beautiful and so many different styles.

I went back 5 or even 10 years later and bought pants or a jacket to replace the worn out cloths or to up date the style. Like cuffed pants to non cuffed pants. The new pants or jacket would color match the old suit perfectly! Almost all the pants were lined too. 90% of my office cloths came from that store. Very nice well made cloths for a reasonable price. Also all the cloths were sized the same. My husband bought me many outfits for presents and they all fit perfect.

    The red polka dot dress she wore in Japan, I have a personal story to share: my family lived in the UK 1985-1989, my Dad was a Canadian diplomat. Before Diana went to Japan she was also going to Canada and she and Prince Charles were invited to dinner at the High Commission and my Dad sat beside her. He said she was drop dead gorgeous in person, but had no idea if she was going to China or Japan. She told my Dad that she had a dress to match “the Chinese flag”. Dad gently corrected her that the leg of their trip after Canada was to Japan, and she laughed and said she was hopeless at geography.

    Women's suits used to come with both a matching skirt and a pair of matching trousers, very much the way men's suits used to come with two pairs of pants. It made the suit more versatile, so one technically got more wearings out of it. Back in the day, a woman just starting out in professional life, and not yet having a full professional wardrobe, could get by with two such suits that coordinated in style and colors, so all the pieces could be mixed/matched, and 6-10 professional shirts/tops that worked with both suits. It was kind of the birth of the capsule wardrobe, and women were advised by "image consultants" not to add anything to the capsule that could not be worn with at least three items she already owned.

I thought Diana's look in the early 80's was over the top. Her wedding dress was way too fussy (I preferred the toned down version in The Crown). Her style did improve in the 90's and her Catherine Walker clothes were lovely.

  • @MayYourGodGoWithYou

    Diana came late to recycling, Princess Anne was wearing clothing and re-wearing clothing long before Diana came on the scene. In fact Princess Anne STILL re-wears clothing first worn in the 1960s and 1970s [and yes, most of us wish we could still fit into clothing from that long ago, guess that's what a lifetime of horse riding and working hard, often manual labour on her farm, does for you]. But just because Diana copied her husband and sister-in-law and wore and re-wore clothing many times doesn't mean she began the trend. She merely copied her in-laws in that regard - and in fairness, many in the aristocracy buy clothing with the intent that it can, will, still be worn in 40-50 years time [yes, Charles still wears clothing from the 60s onwards as well] because that is the logical thing to do.
