I have been obsessed with the soundtracks for the silent hill games recently, so I combined the rock songs I liked the most into one "album"

Oh man, I remember coming back to my dorm room after watching the Silent Hill at the cinema. Immediately hopped on Limewire to download the music. I was astonished to see the name of the singer... (user name is relevant)

Everyone praises the slower, melancholic, atmospheric pieces by Yamoaka but people don't give enough credit to the absolute BANGER alt-rock tracks on the soundtracks, which add so much passion and high-energy to the OSTs. McGlynn is awesome and 'Your Rain' is the best of her work imo. You should have included 'End of Small Sanctuary' though.
I love end of small sanctuary but I can't remember why I didn't put it on here. *If* I make another video like this end of small sanctuary will probably be on it. And yeah it is insane how much the rock tracks are overshadowed by the more atmospheric/lo-fi tracks of the series, everyone talks about theme of laura but so many people don't realize just how many tracks like it there are throughout the games.

The Alt-Rock sound is what gives Silent Hill that visceral and dreamlike edge when it comes to atmosphere and mood, it makes the Twin Peaks similarities stronger with a dash of Ghost Whisperer.
Putting the live version of waiting for you was a nice touch. Just like an actual album keeping the bonus stuff at the end

Thank you for this, I've been jamming with Silent Hill ost exactly because it is Early 2000 alt-rock/post rock gems despite never playing it, I'm thinking about getting into playing the whole series when I got time, first time listening to the theme I thought I've listened to the goofy memey intro, but then it freaking dropped and I just got hooked instantly
Good luck trying to play the games, I got the second one working pretty easily but I still need to find out how to get 3 and 4 working on my laptop.
i have a galaxy s20 fe as a side phone specifically for emulating games, few lags here and there but if you tweak the settings enough you should get lucky
The music, story, and aesthetics: so deep
The gameplay (more than half the game): dinosaur flying monster goes brr brr while you try to understand where to go or what to do. Still my favourite horror game.

This is a genius "album". Transitioning from Silent Hill theme from the live version of Waiting For You, if you play it by loop, sounds great and fitting to each others. Like a proper intro and outro

and while not Shoogaze I do find that Agalloch's In the Shadow of our pale companion has a very Silent Hill vibe
that's a few notable starts I have found. usually I look into already made playlists and go from there.

The soundtrack from these games has always had a chokehold on me. I still regularly listen to these songs, no matter how much time has gone by.

I never got to play Silent Hill, but being able to get access to the soundtracks was some of the best music I've had. Used to have Akira Yamaoka/Mary Elizabeth playlists and listened to them walking home every night. Room of Angels and Your Rain being the ones on repeat

Exactly, a genius move made by the uploader. In fact, it's quite common in the 20's that most bands will use live/unplugged versions of their songs as a bonus for their album. So fitting.

I want to thank you for this playlist. I have never played any of the Silent Hill games, but for some reason this music evokes some kind of personal emotional connection for me, like something from my childhood. The times when I was little. When I was sitting in the car and we were driving somewhere, and I was looking out the window. Dull landscapes of panel houses, which became very close to me. I don't think I'll ever understand where my brain made this connection. Anyway, thanks again!

If it were an actual album, it would just be filled by bands I love like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Evanescence, Nine Inch Nails and Korn.... which is ironic since Korn was on the soundtrack for Silent Hill: Downpour.
I love em all as well but I couldnt imagine a Limp Bizkit song working well in a silent hill game.
I can see songs from Alice in Chains, Godsmack, Staind, Rob Zombie and Filter working in a Silent Hill game alongside Nine-Inch Nails and Korn.

I have to say...This would be more like a 90's alt rock album. The 2000's were too influenced by bands like Evanescence.
That's a HUGE generalization. If you really think that, then you're sleeping on A LOT of great bands, and they're big and famous so that wouldn't make sense. I mean, c'mon, dude.
I have to disagree. A lot of what I listen to is from the 2000s. Best example I can give is Burnout 3 Takedown's soundtrack. There might very well be older songs, but most are 2000s and they do not have that Evanescence influence you're talking about. The most mainstream stuff did however have that influence.
The one only ost (not this, but whole SH) which coming trough my life no matter how changes my musical tastes. Yamaoka is a genius.

I’m excited for the Silent Hill 2 remake. I didn’t want one to be honest because I would’ve rather we get an original Silent Hill game with an original story but after seeing the gameplay trailer I began to look forward to it. Maybe someday we will get a new Silent Hill game with an amazing new story and from a studio that understands the series and respects it.

Yamaoka its simply the Best!
Funny you title this video as such, I've always felt that Origin by Evanescence gives similar vibes. Origin is sort of a demo EP before their big debut came out and tone, imo is LOT darker. The mixes are also a lot different and lean much more into atmosphere. Worth a listen, you might enjoy it.
