  • On 11 July 1987, David Bowie brought his Glass Spider tour to Ireland when he played at Slane Castle.
    The support acts at Slane in County Meath included Aslan, Big Country and The Groove.
    Ahead of the concert, David Bowie spoke to Marty Whelan for the programme ‘Video File’. David Bowie recalls performing on the RTÉ pop music programme ‘Like Now!’ in 1969. Unfortunately, only photographs of the performance remain.
    He also chats about The Rolling Stones playing Slane, touring the world, and contemplates political and social affairs in Russia.
    This episode of ‘Video File’ was broadcast on 12 May 1988. The presenter is Marty Whelan.

    I dont think he could understand why he had so many fans. When he dies he didnt want anyone at his funeral. He was cremated with the poorest of the poor, without any fuss!

    I went because Big Country were one of the supporting acts and I didn’t have a ticket. (I was 16) One of the security guards pulled up the fence and let me in. I was in heaven. Stuart Adamson said “hello to the girl at the back” as I was the only person dancing like mad up on the hill. Still chuffed about that 😂 David was amazing.

    I've heard that tapes were recorded over regularly and that many things went out live and were never recorded at all. RTE didn't seem to have a culture of archiving for the historical record.

    I like Bowie but I was at this Concert and it was the worst Bowie Concert ever and the Support Band Big Country stole the Show. Bowie played all new stuff no one knew and tried to be too Visual. Then all this Tin Machine Stuff?? Before he came back to the old stuff.

    Aslan tried to meet Bowie later on after the Slane gig and Bowie snubbed them. I believe in later years he apologised to the band, apparently at the time he was fearful of the RA and had a lot of security around him.

    Good, old David. He is so down to Earth. We could do with more artists like him today.
    Let's be friends with Russia - have more cultural exchanges and pop/rock concerts, but above all, let's trade, trade and trade some more. It is the best way to create wealth and to maintain trust. Our present-day politicians are so stupid.

    I was at that concert. I was very disappointed. I came for his greatest hits, but what we got was mostly material from his latest album. Whenever he sang one of his well-known songs, he got a rapturous ovation, but even then he resumed playing songs we had never heard before, despite the muted reception they got.

    • @imaonarseal
      @imaonarseal Год назад +1

      Yes, he was probably quite tired of singing those songs. I'm sure he had no intention of singing them every night for the rest of his life, just to please a percentage of concert goers who really weren't interested in him, but only wanted to hear radio hits replayed again and again.
      Bowie was a dedicated artist who wrote new material all the time. His real fans understood how important the creative process was to him. They weren't there to hear ten year old hits.
      So I guess he didn't care about your disappointment and why should he?
