They were hoping to get people to view cars like they do phones -- a phone is useless without a provider you pay every month for service. If you could get people to see cars that way -- useless without a monthly subscription -- then they could sell the cars at a lower initial price, taking an initial loss for the future revenue stream like phone carriers do.

The main issue lies with their pricing strategy. It's hard to see how they can compete with other car manufacturers at a price point of $50,000 USD. In that range, they would be up against tough competition from the likes of Tesla, Ioniq, BMW, and Mercedes. Being a newcomer in the car industry, they lack the established reputation of well-known brands. To persuade customers to choose their cars, the most effective approach would be to offer comparable specifications at a more affordable price. Hyundai and Kia, as Korean car brands, have successfully employed this strategy. By pricing their vehicles lower than Japanese and other competitors, they were able to secure a small market share and sustain their production. Over time, their brand reputation grew, leading to increased consumer trust and loyalty. Alternatively, if VinFast had a visionary founder like Elon Musk, who possesses exceptional business acumen and the ability to attract top talent, they could have a better chance at achieving success on a global scale.

I'd take a Tesla Model 3 for $20K and a $100/mo battery subscription over paying $33K and no battery rental. I think the numbers just have to work out. Especially if that battery rental is essentially an unlimited warranty as long as you keep subscribing. What I saw of the Vinfast formulas didn't seem to make any sense, though. A rental scheme could work especially well if a vehicle isn't going to qualify for the tax credits -- getting the initial price as low as possible makes sense. It sounds strange because it is essentially leasing just a part of a vehicle and that hasn't been done before. How many people are renting their iPhone monthly instead of shelling out $1000 up front ?

Just because Sam doesn't get the idea doesn't mean that the Vinfast battery leasing arrangements are horribly complicated or unfair.
Around the world there are many countries in which the payment for expensive items, housing stock in Northern Europe for instance, gets broken into two components - an up front payment and an ongoing rental payment. The former reduces the outright one off payment for the expensive item and allows people of modest means to acquire expensive goods. The latter finances the full cost of a purchase in a way that is delayed and extended over a longer period, similar in form to repayment of a small loan but at a modest fixed rate without ever having to go to the trouble of taking out a loan.
We are yet to see what Vinfast's best price for one of its cars sin battery will be once it starts making them in the USA.
Now, the battery lease arrangements in North America, after some to-ing and fro-ing, involve unlimited miles in all cases. The most expensive option is a lease charge of USD$219 per month (for the large VS 9 battery).
Vinfast makes its case in this way:
By separating the price of the battery from the acquisition value of the automobile, VinFast takes on all the risks related to the vehicle’s battery and ensures a reasonable price for its products, while providing customers with peace of mind about the battery’s quality during use. VinFast also commits to provide a lifetime battery warranty covering all maintenance and repair costs, and will replace the battery for free when charging capacity dips below 70%. The battery subscription policy is considered a key solution for customers to make a transition to electric vehicles easier, allowing VinFast to become ‘the car for everyone.’
That isn't so hard to understand. The continuation of relatively high monthly lease payments after 5/10 years, say, can't really be justified because by that point the car owner should also fully own the battery based on payments already made. A nominal annual fee to keep the lifetime battery warranty in effect might be justifiable, however.

For Vinfast to work, they need to sell their vehicles at least 30% less than the equivalent Chinese vehicle, until they can gain a small market share above the Chinese equivalent product and of course drop the crazy battery rental deal.

I think this is part of the marketing trick of Vinfast. For now the main market for Vinfast is not US but Vietnam where Vinfast build tens of thousand of charging stations (larger than the number EVs they have sold here). Cars in Vietnam are more expensive than in the US and a lot of other countries. However Vinfast EVs are cheaper in Vietnam compared to their international offerings which give Vietnamese buyers a sense of "a good deal". High prices may give a perception of being "premium", attract "reviews (good and bad 🙂)", and raise awareness. I think later models will be better priced and better built and this is where they can go global. I am a owner and driver of a VF8 in Vietnam for over 6 months and the car is good except some minor defects which have been solved more or less. Being an early adopter, I accept these defects and hope Vinfast will learn quickly and move forward with better EVs.

All of these car companies trying to sell expensive EVs at the same time is doomed. Who is going to buy these things? I keep following this market but it just gets worse and worse. I bought a new Honda CRV. It was in the mid $30s, fills up with gas in minutes at an endless number of convenient locations and I’ll drive it for the next 15 years like all of my other Hondas. This electric stuff still makes no sense to me at all. If I were going to buy electric I would just buy a Tesla. Ford is taking billions in loans from the government and will still be bankrupt. They are just delaying the end. Create cheap simple cars that burn gas.

You need to learn the history, China is also one of the first countries to develop the automobile industry and Vietnam is not, there are new energy electric vehicles most of the patents in the hands of Chinese enterprises, there are Chinese enterprises control raw material supply chain industrial chain parts and components, as well as mining and extraction research and development patents, the world's first commercialized market-oriented new energy electric vehicles are made by BYD. Standards are also set by Chinese companies. Also, China is the largest market with the fiercest competition for world brands, including Chinese car brands and foreign brands such as Europe, America, Japan and South Korea.

Vinfast is expensive, then you have lease the battery pack, which is then mileage restricted PER MONTH, with fines for going over the mileage allowance on top of that the battery lease is also passed onto the next owner when you you sell it, buy a Tesla and you can drive till the wheels falls off with no restrictions and none for the next person you sell it to either. Vinfast has completely missed the idea of the sales pitch, because even though you buy the car you never actually own it outright due to the battery lease crap.

Lease only the whole car, fine. Stuck with the monthly payments and the agreement, if VinFast exit the US then that's it. Slight inconvenience at most. Buy expensive car and lease battery, bad combo. Unknown brand in the US. Bad sentiment towards Vietnam from the US (worse than towards China?). More expensive than competition. No hope. Withdraw back to Vietnam, complete proper development, stick to SE Asia and maybe Australasia until they become experts at EVs. Then maybe back to the US.
UK car brands wasted their time trying to crack the car US for over a century, need to be very strong to try there

Pretty well priced? I disagree. The Chinese and Vietnamese should be competing on price while giving essentially the same vehicle as more established makers. Instead both have tried to provide what look like decent cars, but at prices on par with established makers. Big fail IMO.
