I really can’t respect any army whose leadership seems to actively be trying to get as many of them killed as possible. Like the Damocles Crusade where the Tau killed far more guardsmen than they had any right to because the commanders didn’t understand tactics beyond “march forward and don’t die”. They are not the most flashy of factions...but I think in many ways they are the human spirit incarnate.

Honor the Guardsmen, for in their chest beats the heart of a man. He has no special powers, no super strength, no augmentations. His faith lies within the Emperor of Man. He who was born on some forgotten planet in some corner of the galaxy. He is a factory worker, a farmer, a store keeper, a father, a brother, a son. He fights for not just those he loves, but for man kind as well. He has stood the line against those that would destroy the Imperium across the galaxy. He held the line in the imperial palace during the Horus Heresy, he held the line during the 13th Black Crusade. As Cadia broke, the guardsmen continued to hold the line as the ground under his feet crumbled into space. For ten thousand years the guardsmen has held the line and he will continue to hold it.

Really? Can any army match the raw power of our Baneblades or the versatility of our Leman Russes by equivalence? Does any other army have trillions of soldiers and billions of armored vehicles at any one time under structured command and leadership? And as for the last two, the world of Cadia broke before the Guard did. And it was not through grinding attrition or strategy that won Abaddon his victory: it was his abuse of his writer given Deus Ex Machina powers. Even then, he could not overwhelm mere *humans* for Ten. Thousand. Years. That should tell you the strength of character the Guard has.
Jacob Sailer well given that you pretty much exist to act as bullet sponges to buy time for the Astartes to arrive, I think it’s safe to say that the Space Marines are the greatest armed force in the galaxy with you folks being really useful auxiliaries
Incompetence does not dispute the fact that the Guard held off nearly 10,000 years of the largest Daemonic Invasions since the Horus Heresy with Traitor Marines at its spearhead. The fact that they had to cheat and toss a planet sized rock at Cadia merely proves how tenacious the Cadians are. Also, calling the Guard Auxiliaries is a poor argument because it goes against what an Auxiliary is. Auxiliares have very specific purposes in the military, among which is supporting the main army. The Guard *is* the main army. We do almost all of the fighting in 40k. Besides, the Marines are not built to fight conflicts by their lonesome, unsupported. They constantly need to be aided by both the Imperial Guard and Navy in every one of their campaigns, and even then are regulated to fighting in crucial tactical deployments. In short, they're Special Forces on steroids. A good example of this are the Wars for Armageddon, where nearly 85% of the fighting and killing was done by the Steel Legion and Cadian Shock (plus civilians and militia in the case of Helsreach).
