God Fosse was a genius! The way he understood the power of movement and how it can add power and passion to a story is amazing!

Because that's the point. He's searching for love, but all he's doing is having sex. The whole play is about a young man trying to find meaning in his life, and that's the reason for the dichotomy. His song is what he thinks he's found, even though the audience can see otherwise.
Ahh, the human conundrum for perhaps 10 years of life for many..
That's what I find so very fascinating about this play, and particularly the interactions between Pippin and the Leading Player. "Pippin" is essentially a medieval morality play with a twist. Throughout the play, the Leading Player seems like an entertaining character who's simply trying to help Pippin find the fulfilling life he seeks -- but if you look more closely, you see that the Leading Player is "leading" Pippin in the wrong directions by encouraging him to indulge in humanity's most primitive pleasures (power, sex, and violence). It's not until the very end that you realize the Leading Player has been the real antagonist all along and that he's deliberately set Pippin up for frustration with the intent that Pippin will lose hope and give in to the Leading Player's demands by taking his own life. It's not really an accident that the Leading Player is so hostile toward Catherine during the entire play -- and it's not because of her occasional moments of awkwardness. It's because Catherine is the only person who can offer Pippin the true fulfillment he seeks in the form of love.
It's weird, the song sounds so beautiful and intimate on the soundtrack (for the first half anyways) and then you see it and it's... this. Huh.

One thing about this number which most people fail to notice and appreciate is the fact that none of the women are wearing the clown paint from "Magic To Do" and "Glory." What this means is that after "Glory", they have to take the clown paint off and put on typical female stage makeup -- and then once "With You" is over, they take *that* makeup off and redo the clown paint. By contrast, the men are all still wearing their clown paint (most of them were on stage for "No Time At All" and wouldn't have the time to do it).

I saw Pippin on Broadway near the end of its original run (probably '76 or '77). As a 14-15yo, I was simultaneously thinking the orgy scene was really edgy and very uncomfortable since I was sitting with my parents.
Which is why, when we put on Pippin this week at a community theater, I was wondering how we would get away with it, since we under the auspices of an Orthodox Jewish Day School. Forget nudity. The girls couldn't even have their shoulders bared! Our choreography was therefore much attenuated.
If you didn't know it was supposed to represent an orgy, you probably wouldn't.
Bob Fosse was persuaded by David Sheehan to do this revival for cable TV (and VHS; later DVD). He didn't like it. Pieces were missing. And this is basically a road-company revival version (in Toronto, I believe) so it's not the same. And yet, it's very popular, because we have no other near-full-length Pippin recorded, with any cast of the era.
This was so much fun to dance...one of my favorite shows ever.

I could never figure out the 70's hip rock and rock combined with a plot of the guy who is Charlemagn's medieval son from 900! What a beautiful clash!! Fosse's idea no doubt--he delighted in these opposites.

Pippin searches the entire gamut of human experience to find himself, including War, Love, Politics, Murder, Sex... etc, and that's what this represents.
If you've seen Fosse's movie ALL THAT JAZZ, I would almost bet that the "Come Fly With Me" sequence is his retelling of how this number initially went over with the producers - whose reactions are exactly yours "Why did he take such a wonderful number and sex it up?" That was Fosse's thing.
I think that scene from "All That Jazz" is a combination of "Pippin" and "Chicago". I heard in "Chicago", Fosse choreographed an orgy scene during the "Razzle Dazzle" sequence which the producers nixed.
@@klausweasley Actually it was Billy Flynn's actor Jerry Orbach (lumiere in beauty and the beast) who talked him out of it.
also in an odd reversal, Fosse coaxed Kander and Ebb into taming down one of the lines in Class (now "everybody you watch 'sgot his brains in his crotch", instead of "every boy is a snot, every girl is a twat").
@@klausweasley And there was a "peculiar' number in the show " Dancing" called the dream barre - with the great Ann Reinking going though a VERY erotic dance class....Would have loved to see a recording of that number popping up on youtube. When i saw it on a matinee.......i'd always imagined this is where the producers said: oh, i think we just lost the matinee crowd :-)
We cut so much of this show! Including this song and the GREAT scene when Pippin talks to the head on a pike. I was fortunate enough to play Fastrada but I couldn't do any of the Fastrada's "seduction" of Charlemange.

I've just been cast as Pippin in a local youth production of the show. I'm a HS senior and I'm 18, and we have a cast comprising of performers ages 11-18. I'm the oldest in the cast. Needless to say, our production is probably going to be toned down quite a bit. LOL
we had this on tape when i was 12. i watched it over and over again for months. i tried to memorize the 3 girls' dance but i never got it completely.

I did this back in the late 90s in high school.. copied the musical to the T...even the costumes. I was in the pit..but man I loved the music to this. I can remember everything about this awesome musical.
Love this show....if you ignore all the sexual stuff (which is quite hard you'll agree xD) the lyrics to this song are absolutely beautiful

Well we were all fully clothed. It was just that apparently the principal didn't know about the content of the show until the beginning of hell week and decided to show up at rehearsal saying certain things had to be cut. This included the lift in this video, which was about four 8 counts. It was madness until the choreographer was able to come in and fix it.
It's the same for my school. We might be doing it next year, but he's cutting all of this out if we do.

the lyrics are substantially different from the original broadway cast recording. anyone know why?
@Bellakid13 my school is doing it too and there is a cut off where the song dosent get faster but also there is some alterations to the dances even though most of the stuf we are using is the original stuff just toned down so that it is posiable for a high school to do it

I think he was 5 foot nine really cute guy. I really love Roddy McDowall even though he wasn’t oh good singer, but he was the photographer which is kind of like a visual artist. This guy is really cute and he was really too great singing really good acting. This was extremely sexual. I hope you had a good time lol lots of lgiggles

we did this song, but all the girls that were dancing were in black and at least one of them was holding fake grapes. Of course they weren't dancing sensually like this.
