Hey...I sat next to William Katt at a Rick Springfield concert in 1983. I had no idea he was a Broadway star. I just thought it was cool that he was the lead on "The Greatest American Hero." Memories!

Considering the lack of mic’s and Mr Katt having to sing over the brass section that’s BLAIRING his is my favorite version.

they used stage mics im pretty sure which are on the stage usually close in shape to the stage to blend in. these are called omni directional microphones.

@@katherine9109close in shape for the microphones on the stage . This means the microphones are flat or as close to that shape as possible . Microphones when possible like all theater equipment is used to enhance a production without making people focus on it. Actors , stage crew create an ancient form of TV the stage is the screen and the objective is to entertain and create an experience "where people can come and waste an hour or two" .

You can tell this is hard for William Katt to sing, but the gravely sound on the high notes, the falsetto put perfectly at the end, and the surfer dude vibes I get, This is my favorite Pippin bar none. Ben Vereen's and Chita Rivera's look says it all.

One of my favorite aspects of this rendition of the song is the fact that the players watch stoically in the background, almost judging him or sizing him up. He's alone despite the fact that the stage is full. I've seen many versions of Pippin where the players get into the song and encourage Pippin...and I really prefer this. It sets up how odd and sinister the players are, and just how different Pippin is from them. I love it.

Pablo Laucerica - I played Leading Player in the touring company of Pippin as well as the dinner theatre production. Mr Fosse is peobably turning in his grave over the DISASTEROUS revival of the show. In my most honest opinion...it SUCKED!!! The entire inner meaning of who Lead Player was to Pippin as well as the imagined troupe of players is totally lost in the circus environment. Mr. FOSSE explained to us that we were the embodiment of Pippin's inner struggle between his wanting to be extraordinary vs. The Reality of life that it is the simple things that make our lives glorious. Lead Player is Pippin's subconscious who leads him (or rather Pippin leads himself) in the exploration of the many aspects in life (i.e.: war, sex, drugs, politics...only to find in Catherine and her son Theo, that he's happiest when he realizes that that is what makes life extraordinary after all.

the play is about the eldest son of a king who doesn't fit in anywhere. It's really good. The Leading Player is basically the Devil. Which of course makes everything he does really flashy and awesome. XD There's a lot of meanings and lessons you can draw from this play if you think about it. and it's just good even if you don't think about it. XD
