  • If your gas gauge isn't reading correctly, this may be why. Of course other things can cause it not to work too. But the sending unit will fail eventually. It's the nature of the beast.
This video shows function and replacement of the sending unit on my 1972 MGB. Happy Motoring!

Thanks for the video. I had to laugh. I was trying to troubleshoot why my gas gauge wasn't working and decided to check the sending unit. since there was some gas in the tank - though I didn't know for sure how much since the gage wasn't working - I reasoned that if I jacked up the right side of the car, I could remove the sending unit for inspection. Wrong! Gas came pouting out after I loosed the sending unit from the rubber gasket. The gasket turned out to be hard as a rock and wouldn't reseal leaving me with a slow fuel leak. In the end I had to drain the tank so I could replace the sending unit. (yes, I could have just replaced the rubber gasket but since I had everything apart I figured I might as well replace the whole assembly.)
So now my problem is not that the gas gauge reads empty all the time. Now it reads full even with no gas in the tank. And No, I didn't put the unit in upside down. I checked. There's always something with these old cars.

Hi potkas7. Oh boy. Yes, I thought my tank was empty enough too, jacking the right side up. I was wrong !!
If ur gauge is reading full always,, it (the needle) could be stuck there. Or the wire going back to the sending unit is shorted to the chassis.
Also, ur voltage regulator under the dash (little metal thing with two wires on it) in driver's side (left side, just look up you'll see it) could be shot.

So why did you not take the tire off? Helpful video.

Hello there. There's really no need to remove the wheel from the car, as there's plenty of access room.
It's been great thus far. Gas gauge still works and no leaks since I've done this job. I didn't expect any problems as it's pretty straightforward.
Just make sure those three ears on the tank are bent over sufficiently to lock in the sending unit.

The most important part of the video you missed out? Actually removing and replacing the unit wow👺

Hi Lawrence, just rotate the old locking ring counterclockwise, pull out old sending unit (noting orientation), & remove old gasket. Then install new gasket, insert sending unit in the same orientation, and install new locking ring by rotating clockwise. Sorry about that. I don't have a phone tripod just yet, and I certainly needed both hands to do these maneuvers efficiently as gas was pouring out (I thought tank only had a little gas left...I guess she gets better gas mileage than I thought - 🙂).
If I can be of any assistance, please let me know and I'd be happy to help. Or if your job is done already, then I hope it was a success !! 💯
