  • I tear down, clean, lubricate some RockShox Quadra 21R shocks. They were working fine, but had almost no lubrication at all. General maintenance. If the elastomers had been bad, I could have replaced them using a rebuild kit. Another company makes springs to replace the elastomers. But the elastomers in these shocks were okay. I used Slickoleum for lubrication in these Rock Shox.
    The extra long hex socket I used was part of this set:
    www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASI...
    * Use grease made for forks. I use Slickoleum which is also sold under the name Slick Honey. You can also use SRAM Butter or Judy Butter. If the fork uses oil, use the proper fork oil. Use of a grease/oil not made specifically for forks can damage the plastic/polyurethane parts, or otherwise leave the fork not working properly.

    I just ordered new elastomers for my 21r shocks. They were on my 1990 giant ATX880. Can't wait till they get here. I had to order them from a place in Arizona.
    The old elastomers are disintegrating, so they may take a little work getting out. These forks never been serviced. I know the first 2 owners personally, and they never did it. The bike sat in a bedroom and garage for years and years before i bought it from my friends. I hope these 30 plus year old elastomers come out easier then i expect them to.
    People mention the spring replacement, i don't believe theyvare available. I could only find the elastomers at one place. Mine were ordered based on my weight.

    Hey, I like your video. You show and explain it all very well. I've got an old Diamond Back Ascent MTB with Rock Shox Quadra 21R on it. I just followed your initial steps on how to pull it apart, but when I got to removing the (you called it the stack), well there was no stack at all inside mine... just a plastic piece (kinda like first part of stack), then a long metal rod came out. Hmm, not sure what to do now. I did take my bike for service last year, but they told me that the Rock Shox are completely stuffed and can't be repaired and that I should buy new shocks. Last year I was thinking that it would cost me a bit too much to be spending so much on such an old bike, but now I'm thinking that I probably do need to go out and buy new shockers. Do you know what would be the equivalent (size, etc.) for these shockers for new shockers? Would love to hear your feedback. Thanks. :-)

      big touble. My Elastomers are so old and dead they have turned to clay. only the top three sections of the stack came out. It is literally clay. How can I get the rest out, without destroying the inside of the tubes? I think i will need some really severe long tweezers tool to try to pull the nub on each plastic section out, then dig out the clay? What a mess. I was so ready to have an easy change out, and go riding...

      @@keithstone6766 Hi Keith. You need to get this tool I found. It is a triple jointed needle nosed plier. I found it at Lowes. its about 10 inches long more or less ( i don't have it in front of me). perfect tool for what we have to do here. That way you can actually reach down all the way into the tube and you are able to get a grip on every piece of the elastomer stack and pull it out. It takes patience, and a good head mounted flashlight helps too, so you can see down the tube. The pliers allowed me to basically pull everything out. Then I used some mineral spirits as a solvent with an old toothbrush and was able to clean out the remaining crud without damaging the inside of the tube. It took time and patience to get a grip on every piece, but you are very satisfied when its complete. I also located replacement elastomers at an online bike parts supplier. I was able to salvage the plastic spacers in between, but i assume those could be had if necessary. The shocks now are as good as new, and remarkably good. I am having a great time on that old, but rebuilt, classic bike. Good luck.

    • @dean4559
      @dean4559 2 года назад +1

      @@keithstone6766 Keith, do a google search for Irwin vise-grip compound long reach pliers. Thats what i used to get into the bottom sections of the tube. they are slim enough to get into the tube, and you can open them just enough to grab a hold of the stack parts. thats the key. well worth the 15$. considering what they will do.

      There are companies like "Suspension Fork Parts" (or also Shockcraft based in NZ) that may carry old stock. In the worse case, you may have to try make your own from solid rubber rod (try McMaster-Carr), but they wont work the same. Its an obsolete technology for forks.
