Pretty sure Charlie Day & Glenn Howerton(Dennis) have both performed on Broadway.. sidenote Charlie is also very good at playing a variety of musical instruments.. all the bits in the show when he's playing an instrument he is actually playing it.. like the multiple episodes with him playing piano and even the ski resort one when he has the saxophone solo..

Great vid. Didn't catch all the meta stuff in "the gang desperately tries to win an award", now I'll have to re-watch. I know Rob Mcelhenney admitted to gaining weight for season 7 opener (Franks pretty woman), just to go the opposite direction of normal sitcoms with ensemble cast where actors get nice haircuts and lose weight as the years go on.
My favorite meta moment of the show is during the season 12 episode when they make the sitcom about Mac and Charlie's moms. When Dennis adds the laugh track for the first time, they take a nice jab at how comedy works in some shows with regards to laugh tracks. Mac: "But the laughing tells me that it's funny!" Frank: "Those people laughing tells me when I should laugh!"
The scene where they're in the bathroom talking about not changing Mac is wearing the same clothes he wore in the pilot and he even has his hair styled the same.
"Clearly success is starting to get to all of us. We can't be superman" says Charlie pointing at Dennis. This is brilliant cause Glenn Howerton got turned down to play Superman. This show is brilliant:))
When Dee gives birth and they find out she was just a surrogate, they say things like “that’s good, I like the chemistry we have here, bringing a kid into the mix would mess everything up.”
In the Dee Gets Audited episode, she fakes the kid's death. That's probably what really lets the audience know that you will never see her make any attempt to show a nurturing side.

When Charlie started to spit at the people listening to him sing, I laughed for at least 10 minutes straight. It was and still is the funniest damn scene I've ever witness on T.V. Ever. My god I thought I was going to die laughing. I would have been ok with that. :D

Here's one you might not know about.. Mac gave an interview during the season where he was fat and said the reason he did it was because almost every sitcom the characters generally look better/more attractive as the seasons go on.. i.e. seinfeld, friends, etc.. and he wanted to do the opposite of that and make his character look worst so he literally ate multiple jars of peanut butter daily and all kinds of junk food and ultimately put on 80lbs(iirc).. I seriously thought he was in a fat suit when that season premiered until I researched it and found that interview..
It was 50 pounds, in the show he says 60 pounds. He pudged up nicely, but the more I watch Fat Mac episodes, the more I see how built he was below the fat. Way to cultivate mass!
@@roberthandzus4066 He gained the weight over a 6 month period. He said that it was affecting his breathing (sleep apnea) and his heart. I went through that when I was clinically obese. There's no way that he would make that up in order to get away with wearing a fat suit.

Thanks for the deep dives man! Really appreciate the content. I grew up with this show essentially. Spent most of my twenties in depression and this show was a great remedy. More than a pick me up. Maybe it was the dark humor, tragedy equals comedy style and watching people older than me with more problems than me. Either way, it helped me laugh at my own situation and take it lightly here and there! I know they’re still going, they’re older, and of course I miss the older seasons, but I love these guys and always will.
You, my friend... you are spot on about this. I’ve always loved this show for this reason and you making this connection means my mushroom trip had as much merit as I analyzed.
SomethingOhMy you would be surprised how many people that use the word meta, don't actually know what it means. Who knows, maybe I'm that type of person too. Maybe I'm just smart enough to keep it a secret😎
SomethingOhMy Its a broad term really, but a narrative is meta if it references that it is a piece of fiction. I guess thats the most general description of it.
And the episode where they have charlie's and mac's moms live together and create their own sitcom and talk about how adding a laugh track lets you know when to laugh
Spot on man, I missed those references because I watch online. But damn, it all makes sense. You nailed it man. In the colorful bar scene it stood out as a direct correlation to the cringy shitty shows people mindlessly watch, with laugh tracks. So spot on meta. Brilliant...
Thank you for giving me the assurance that other people do take the time to analyze and appreciate all of the incredibly well-thought out qualities of this show. This is truly one of the most intelligently allegorical shows that’s ever been made and it actually makes me angry that it goes over so many people’s heads
aside from being meta jokes, the episode where they get success reminds me that the joke is, is that if anything good happens to them something bad is gonna happen or something is gonna ruin it, the award episode showed that too, they couldn't uphold being that kind of bar. ;) another good one is they don't drink to not get the flu and they end up finding out they are alcoholics but instead of just letting the withdrawal happen they drink again to be safe, I love this show so much.
I think it's not so much that "something" is going to ruin it for them, but rather that they bring their own destruction simply by being their own, horrible, selfish selves. Much love to The Gang, can't get enough. Totally rewatchable, which will save my mind when they eventually call it quits.
Everyone is missing the deeper meaning behind the Award episode. Yes, it is about how sitcoms all follow the same formula, but specifically they are attacking The New Girl. If you haven't noticed, New Girl, and all the characters in it, is a complete rip off of Sunny. Both shows are produced by Luvh Rakhe. He took Sunny, "softened the edges," and it IMMEDIATELY began winning awards on network TV. Sitcom=Bar is an easy connection to make. Sunny is to Paddy's as New Girl is to Sudz is the real message we were meant to figure out.
Dude I fucking love this man, thank you for taking the time because this shit killed me! How I didn’t notice the last episodes commentary killed me haha.
Dennis' speech at 3:00 cracked me up when I saw it. Its self awareness at its finest. If you are new to the show its funny and if you are an old fan the episode is making fun of itself. 7:20 Wow, how did I not get this episode at all.
Word. And kudos. Nearly every episode is saying more than what is on the surface. This is Something that can be easily missed. Both by those who are fans and by those who dismiss it as merely being a group of narcissists yelling over each other. Once you've watched every episode 6 plus times, listen to every episode, 12 plus times. Meeeeeoooooow....
Too Chill For This thanks my dood. my RUclips channel is pretty low on the priority list right now. but I have several ideas and scripts running down the pipeline. it will probably be quite a while before my next sunny video. it's a fucking huge project, basically have to rewatch the whole series and take notes and timestamps. only have gotten through one season so far. but it will get done eventually. other mindset videos about video games to come soon enough as well. don't count on frequent uploads though, but your comment is appreciated my dood 🤗
Production value on the video was a little low but you made some solid points. Overall nice video, just maybe add some quiet music or something so theres not just white noise
Good content! Your delivery is really choppy though, I almost turned off the video immediately because of the pacing of the voice over. If you master that then I think you'd have a pretty good skill set to work with
Great video! I never noticed the connection between bar and TV show, but its so clear now and it made one of my favorite episodes EVEN better. Thank you!
if youd like to grow your channel just some friendly advice make a script maybe because you seem to stop often in the middle of your sentances and It can get slightly annoying to listen to. maybe its just me, maybe youre just putting on a "sad, depressive" persona and that's why you talk all drawn out and slow. either way chin up and work on your delivery. good luck
the video is entirely scripted. what you are hearing is nervousness and lack of the style and inflections that are present in my normal tone of voice. i tried to improve this in my more recent sunny video. over time it will disapear.
im aware of the stagnation of narrative style. My end goal for my narration is just my natural voice and style of speaking. so close to this but less nervous and with slightly more variety in tone of voice.
Gotta agree with this critique. The video was great except for the delivery. Your wording was done well enough to indicate it was scripted. But you kept pausing between words like you wanted us to think it was off the cuff.
operaider the pauses are how I read out loud, I'm finding it works better if I go slightly off script wording wise, makes it sound more natural and flows better than if I read the script verbatim. I'll get there.. The delivery is awkward as hell though. Working on that.
On the sitcom critique, they started doing this early on. At the start of S4E2, Mac, Charlie and Dennis talk about how by breaking from basic character archetypes used by other groups (the brains, the looks, wild card) they limit their ability to be successful.
I think Sunny is a study done in Flandersization done right. These characters are custom made to be distilled down to their base traits. The devolution into absurdity is one of Sunny's funniest aspects.
Also, the boss from the bar Frank's talking about is played by Oscar Nunez who most know as Oscar from the Office, a show that's won a bunch of awards and was still running at the time of the writing of that episode, further driving the comparison between the bar awards and the television awards
great job. i knew the reference ... but didn't realize how many were in the award episode. i saw separate interview where they railed against laugh tracks.
Holy cow, I NEVER realized the satire behind these episodes but now I'm seeing how OBVIOUS it was xD I can't believe I missed it, thanks for making this video! I love this show even more now
I noticed all these and had the same thoughts. I never dove much deeper into my random thoughts but I'm glad you had enough time and tools on your hands to make this vid. Great video homie!!
I like the three videos I've seen in this series. To the tragedy, handling of politics, and meta nature, I'd add two factors of comedic brilliance in the show: 1. Consequences which make sense in universe, and have lasting effects. The gang remains perpetually morally stagnant, but the way they tear down their side characters yields lasting results which invest us in the overall story of the show. 2. Tightly woven narratives with the whole gang never spending too long apart. When the show does A plot/B plot, the whole gang usually starts in the same scheme, splits apart over differences, and ends up back together having gone through role reversals as they back into an ending which has similarity with the beginning. There is much more to it, but for me these factors really elevate it from being a collection of funny gags delivered by funny people. Each episode has an almost epic feel as the characters go out on wacky adventures. No matter how much we suspend disbelief, we don't lose sight of the fact that the gang is a constant failure.
It's the most absurd live action comedy I've ever seen and it still manages to not break suspension of disbelief. The way they manage to make the characters seem real, and yet if you analyze anything they do, it seems like you would never see it in real life. The context of their reality is understood by the viewer and they often remind us how little sense their actions have when they interact with other people. It almost works as an unintentional microcosm of how everyone exists within their own Reality and even the craziest people we meet might be making perfect sense if we had all the context that they have
I think the absurdism actually really helps the show's longevity. Sitcoms are usually designed around "it's funny because it's true". They use real people to create absurd situations that the exaggerate the audience experience. The problem is that humor usually requires pushing the boundaries of reality, so these sitcoms run into trouble by having to keep pressing reality farther and farther. They lose the "it's funny because it's true" element and their audience with it. I think that's why seinfeld had longevity in its day- it was more realistic but it had some absurdities baked in to allow a greater amount of boundary pushing before it got tired. iasip hits just the right level of absurdity that I could imagine the gang literally jumping a shark like the fonz and it completely makes sense.
Wow thanks for this I'm a big movie/tv theory lover and a HUGE fan of Sunny and had never backed up and looked at it from this perspective it's like a new show.........great video!

You, my friend... you are spot on about this. I’ve always loved this show for this reason and you making this connection means my mushroom trip had as much merit as I analyzed.
You missed the other bar award episode that was about the north korean crisis where the north korean bar was enriching the beers
L. Ron Hoyabembe what do we want? Xenu! When do we want it?? TEN TRILLION YEARS
mistabimbims bless you my son
And what about that door marked "pirate"
I see a door marked "private." Is that the... is that the door you're talking about?
Nicolas Cage are we gonna talk about pirates all day or are we gonna find out whats in there??
They're so smart.
I still don't know what meta really means.
Im. So. Meta Even. This. Acronym.
And the episode where they have charlie's and mac's moms live together and create their own sitcom and talk about how adding a laugh track lets you know when to laugh
people undervalue the newer episodes. there is gold to be found there.
Idk how i stumbled upon this but I'm glad i did. Good work man
Spot on man, I missed those references because I watch online.
Dave Wassef no. No. Thank YOU for your kind words.
I have trouble picking up on the subtleties of the arts and I try very hard to spot them
“Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You understand it better but the frog dies in the process.” ― E.B. White
aside from being meta jokes, the episode where they get success reminds me that the joke is, is that if anything good happens to them something bad is gonna happen or something is gonna ruin it, the award episode showed that too, they couldn't uphold being that kind of bar. ;) another good one is they don't drink to not get the flu and they end up finding out they are alcoholics but instead of just letting the withdrawal happen they drink again to be safe, I love this show so much.
I think it's not so much that "something" is going to ruin it for them, but rather that they bring their own destruction simply by being their own, horrible, selfish selves. Much love to The Gang, can't get enough. Totally rewatchable, which will save my mind when they eventually call it quits.
This show is truly genius. There are so many layers and double meanings to their jokes and themes, it’s creativity is incredible. 420✌️
I hate New Girl
It was more like Friends. The will they won't they was Ross & Rachel. The bar was Central Perk. It could also be Cheers. Sam & Diane.
I have always thought the character nick from new girl was a poor mans charlie kelly. total rip off, but no where near as edgy, crazy or funny
I think you made a great case for that first episode. I never saw that angle before and I appreciated that.
are you drunk
nmo i mnot drunkkl
I think he chose a tone of voice that would appeal to the Always sunny audience
Sean C. Mako nah. I just have trouble speaking in my natural voice while reading my script. Working on it though
Nach0mama13 I thought it worked for the video. Maybe I was just over analyzing it
al il x2
That was very good I tend to see things like this in smaller ways so I hope you come out with more analysis!
Okay now the ratio joke is funnier lol
i like the meta joke where dennis says "i hear the laug track it tells me when to laugh"
Holy shit I’ve watched this show like 5 times over how did I not even notice the last one
I watched every episode of sunny more than 20 times. Who needs an award !!!
Word.
PLEASE add MORE narration. Wow. I had no idea what the video was about without constant explanation.
You deserve more subs tbh you did really good on this video
Too Chill For This thanks my dood. my RUclips channel is pretty low on the priority list right now. but I have several ideas and scripts running down the pipeline. it will probably be quite a while before my next sunny video. it's a fucking huge project, basically have to rewatch the whole series and take notes and timestamps. only have gotten through one season so far. but it will get done eventually. other mindset videos about video games to come soon enough as well.
don't count on frequent uploads though, but your comment is appreciated my dood 🤗
The end of "Dee gives birth" where they talk about the baby ruining their chemistry is very meta
lol I started watching always Sunny on the 4th of July, and I've seen all 12 seasons
its a great show! when i first watched it, I binged it really hard too
Once you find the show; you're hooked...It's like nothing out there...Rob and Charlie are Geniuses....
Rock Flag and Eagle 🦅
just watched the show all the way through, appreciate having these to watch! All the videos i’ve watched from you i’ve enjoyed.
Production value on the video was a little low but you made some solid points. Overall nice video, just maybe add some quiet music or something so theres not just white noise
DejaquezernDenaster lol nice racially charged joke.
Production value? How do you up production value on a video consisting of clips from another show?
Dusk Legend Well, he could dub the voices for us.
Dude...good work. This is my all time fav tv show and I missed most of what you brought up. Thanks for giving me an added appreciation of it
Good content! Your delivery is really choppy though, I almost turned off the video immediately because of the pacing of the voice over. If you master that then I think you'd have a pretty good skill set to work with
scoobysmokes working on it my dood
Working on that.
you are kind of right but you need also a rythome to structure the video
This was excellent, man. Makes me appreciate sunny that much more. Thanks for putting this together!
damm dude you are wayy to hyper
tone it down a bit next time, ok
:)))
XD
On the sitcom critique, they started doing this early on. At the start of S4E2, Mac, Charlie and Dennis talk about how by breaking from basic character archetypes used by other groups (the brains, the looks, wild card) they limit their ability to be successful.
"Meta"
I probably watch this episode 50 times and didn't know this. Thanks man
This was awesome. I've watched it many times and only rarely picked up on meta stuff. Thanks for putting this out there
I noticed the meta-ness in It's Always Sunny but it's on a whole 'nother level when you point out the award episode.
I think Sunny is a study done in Flandersization done right. These characters are custom made to be distilled down to their base traits. The devolution into absurdity is one of Sunny's funniest aspects.
The episode, Old Lady House: A Situation Comedy is also pretty meta.
Thank you for this. I blame never being high while watching for not realizing these things. If I was, i would have gotten these immediatly.
I’m a die hard fan of this show and I’m glad to see videos like this that give great insight
Also, the boss from the bar Frank's talking about is played by Oscar Nunez who most know as Oscar from the Office, a show that's won a bunch of awards and was still running at the time of the writing of that episode, further driving the comparison between the bar awards and the television awards
Your videos make me realise how insanely fucking smart this show is beyond the comedy, continuity and character development
Absolutely right. I've watched this show over and over again, always finding something new to appreciate. One of my favorite shows!
This actually made me go and re-watch a lot of episodes, and I gained a fresh perspective
great job. i knew the reference ... but didn't realize how many were in the award episode. i saw separate interview where they railed against laugh tracks.
This was great man!!! Please do more it seemed to have a good response
I would listen to hours of this type of commentary.
I've thought about most of these and love how you broke them down bit by bit. Well done!
Your monotone voice makes this video even better, honestly. XD
I like the three videos I've seen in this series. To the tragedy, handling of politics, and meta nature, I'd add two factors of comedic brilliance in the show:
You know you are watching too much Sunny when you begin sounding like Charlie...
I recently started watching this show for the first time and it is everything 😂😂
Wow thanks for this I'm a big movie/tv theory lover and a HUGE fan of Sunny and had never backed up and looked at it from this perspective it's like a new show.........great video!
thanks bro, honestly i never saw it tgat way before.
thanks for your effort in taking the time.
best wishes kid !!
Wow......and all these times I watched multiple times a episode. The writing is so superb.
I’m so glad you made this. It was always kind of obvious what this episode is doing but honestly I love it being spelled out and shown point for point as a “go fuck yourselves” to the Emmy/tv industry
I didn’t notice a lot of the stuff the first time lol , you have a film critic brain my man
