- I head to Devon to have a look at a section of the former railway from Holdsworthy to Bude and in the opposite direction out of Holsworthy along the Ruby Way towards Hawill Jct.

The viaduct you walked across looked in such good condition albeit over 120 yrs old! - not like the concrete in use recently that has had to be reinforced or removed.
I appreciate you separating the video into parts to accommodate the adverts! They used to intrude mid sentence often or not. Thanks Paul!
Thank you Diana!
Yes, it is amazing condition - what did they know about making concrete then that we don't know about now?!
I am trying to reduce the number of ad breaks in my videos, and make them be as unobtrusive as possible - although I am not sure it will work for all viewers - we will see - I will talk about it more in my next monthly vlog and ask for feedback then. Glad you noticed though, and glad it makes for less harsh transitions into the ads. Thank you for mentioning it.
Take care,
Paul
To me a viaduct is a beautiful piece of architecture silhouetted against the background. They are a picture waiting to be painted. Thank you Paul for sharing.👍
Viaduct, yes please. I love these lost railway walks, it's amazing what you spot.
Thank you Faith!
Glad you enjoyed it.
There will be another Lost Railway Walks one, hopefully later this month all being well.
Take care,
Paul
A super railway explore, Paul. Very impressive viaduct, and in great condition. A very enjoyable adventure. More please! Take care. Ron.🙂👍
Thank you Ron!
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, I enjoyed walking this route. It was a super explore.
Take care,
Paul
Astonishing good condition of 120 year-old Derrington viaduct - testimony to the skills of those who constructed this remarkable concrete structure. So nice to see it open for walkers and cyclists, but sad there is no access at Holsworthy. The silver lining perhaps, is the campaign to reopen the line, although apart from the cost, there are likely to be objections from landowning interests along the way. Very enjoyable video of a beautiful part of North Devon. Thank you.
Thank you Malcolm.
It really is in stunning condition - a real credit to the designers and constructors.
Yes, it is a shame there is no direct access, but you aren't taken too far away.
Let's up it (Bude line) can be opened up at some point.
Take care,
Paul
Nice sharing friend❤. Thank you 🌸🌺🌼
Thank you 👍😊
My pleasure 🌸
Another lovely video, Paul. Thankyou
Thank you Michael!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Cheers,
Paul
Wonderful to see railways turned to trails...we have some nice ones here in Nova Scotia. Makes for some marvelous walking!
Thank you Bruce!
Yes, they make excellent trails not least because they are usually flat walking but also because they often having interesting relics along the way.
Glad you have some in Nova Scotia too .
Cheers,
Paul
Hi Paul another nice railway walk video 👌👌
Thank you Roy!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Hope you have a great weekend.
Take care,
Paul
The viaducts are so lovely to see and amazing how they are in such good condition. Loved seeing the area and hearing the history and factors impacting where the railway went, and the birds around as well. It looks like a great place for a stroll. Great work, Paul!
Thank you Donna.
Yes, this walk was a true green corridor - lots of wild flowers and birds.
Good to see the viaduct now repurposed as a cycling route and the viaduct in great condition.
Thank you for a lovely comment.
Take care,
Paul.
Hello Paul - greetings from Poland
A really lovely video of the walk along the old railwat track. Not much to see of the railway itself except those two magnificent viaducts. The idea of reopening part of the line to bude seems to be a great idea. However, I'm not too sure this will happen because of rights of way and land ownership etc.
Thank you Michael!
Glad you enjoyed it.
I do hope the land ownership rights can be overcome, but I am sure it will be a lengthy process, unfortunately.
Hope you have a great weekend.
Take care,
Paul
An interesting video Paul. Enjoyed all the info and seeing the route too. Certainly would like to ride the trail at some point.
Thank you Watto!
Glad you enjoyed it.
It is a good one to bike on I think.
Cheers,
Paul
Very enjoyable & informative video, thank you. I have walked many of our disused railway trackbeds but not in North Devon, something I must remedy. While I understand the economic case for many Beeching closures, it astonishes me that even back then it was thought a good idea to remove railway access to so many popular seaside resorts along the coast of south west England.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it.
Yes, I whole heartedly agree with you with regard to line closures - at the very least they should have kept the lines mothballed, and not allowed the land to have been sold off piece meal and built over.
I do hope to cover the Gt. Torrington line in the future, as well as the line to Ilfracombe, time, travel and weather willing!
Cheers,
Paul
Interesting detail about the locals/natives' pronunciation of Holsworthy Paul. I've lived in Devon for nigh on 40 years(albeit not in West Devon) but have not come across the native pronunciation before. I do find these details interesting, so thank you for including it in your video.
Thank you!
Yes, the original North Devon pronounciation of Holsworthy (holes-er-ree) seems to be dying out as more people move to Devon from other areas.
West Devon has a few pronunciation gems of its own like Shaugh Prior and Wotter!
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Take care,
Paul
Hi Paul,
A lovely walk along the line. I wonder if it will be reopened it does seem to make sense and would get a lot of traffic off the roads.
The second viaduct was a joy to see especially as you didn't know if anything remained. It's probably a harder job to get the land ownership sorted than restoring the viaduct!!
Interesting to hear about the breed of cattle giving name to the walk. In the Cadiz region you will find a similar breed down on the Bolonia beach, look it up!!
I spotted the sign for Dartmoor boots from "German and sons" here German is a first name and pronounced as Herman, which is a German name I think .... I'll leave it there this comment is getting too confusing!!
Have a great weekend!!
Hi David!
Great to hear from you - hope you have a great weekend too.
Yes, I think land ownership rights will be the biggest pitfall in trying to get this line reopened.
Interesting about the Herman/German name! Yes, that poster was in the museum in Holsworthy.
Thank you!
Paul
this line is about 30 mins away from me, nice to see some of my local places online
also holsworthy has a very good model shop, simons trains
Thank you and thanks for watching and commenting.
I do hope to cover this area again in the future, as it doesn't get featured that often on RUclips.
Cheers,
Paul
What a great film Paul, nice walk with your trade mark research and careful filming. Fascinating area. Don't know how you found the dry weather, have you got a direct line to the man upstairs. Great stuff. Ron
Thank you Ron!
I filmed this at the end of my little break in North Devon - I was extremely lucky with the weather for the whole of the week!
I really enjoyed walking here - it was a wonderful walk, and, that viaduct! Wow! How could they make concrete like that then, but they can't now?!
Always great to hear from you Ron.
Take care,
Paul
