Well done! Great 1st effort. Drop to upper hand is a good starting point. Classic beginners mistake of coming over the top and chopping the arc but everyone does this to some degree. Concentrate on rotating round with your hips rod comes round side and dont hit until left hand out infront of you towards the target. Take it real slow and feel rod load up before even think of hitting it.

Hi , I used to be a Sea Angler magazine casting instructor. I'll try and give some positive help, firstly you are right on a longer drop length to slow the pendulum swing down, but you are swing the lead to fast which will make timing the start cast difficult as it's going too fast. On your first pendulum you also got tip bounce this will muck up the pendulum swing. On the outswing of the pendulum the rod should be almost parallel with the ground, when the lead reaches the top of the outswing, you then push down and away with left hand and do not bring your right back towards you. If you have done this right, after the lead has swung back past you , you will feel as it goes over the top of the inswing, at this point you can start the cast. This is where most people learning the pendulum go wrong, they try and hit it at this point! You should sweep the rod around you accelerating as you do so , turn look up then hit it. It takes practice to get it right. There is no set style of pendulum it depends on you physical attributes. Thing to remember is you are trying to compress the rod and lock it and hold that, until you hit it. The only way way to hold the compression is through constant acceleration. The best way I can explain this is that the rod is both a spring and a lever, we want to store energy in the spring, the only way to keep that energy in the spring (rod ) is via constant applied force ( ie acceleration ). As soon as that force is reduced or removed , the stored energy is released.
So over all my advise is slow it all down and find a local casting instructor, he will be able to analyse what you are doing and point you in the right direction and lots of practice.
Any way tight lines and all the best!

Thank you for taking the tike to write all this I really do appreciate it. I will give it a try what your saying. Finding a casting instructor around by me isn't easy. I wanted to go to the casting downs down south Wales but I just can't get there as I'm always working on the days they have it on its very frustrating. I haven't been out practicing for a long time now unfortunately but I am very comfortable with the otg cast I do it without thinking now and not worring about how and when to hit it and it goes strait too. Been doing it with bait too.
I will take on board what you have said and try it thank you for taking the tike to do this for me.
      Thanks Dave

I've got inner tube fixed to my rod with cable ties, essential to not burn your thumb and grip the spool well. That's one less thing to worry about! You seem to be not doing too bad, it takes practice. Have you tried slowing the cast down a bit, it might help with compressing the rod better and feel easier for you. Not snatching at the last minute and letting the rod do more of the work as it unloads might also mean you can use less brakes.

    • @C3BFA

    Good effort!
It takes a lot of practice to get the timing right especially with a 14' 4" rod. The cast is slower. The DJ said it, try not to chop the cast, the left arm needs to stay straight and come around, the right will follow.
Just my humble opinion but one of the most asthetic of casters is JP Shrader, he's silky smooth, great to watch & learn from.

watcha mate well done for the vid , I have watched loads of vids as well to learn like yourself , from what I think ive seen I think that with the pend cast you maybe should hit the lead just as it reaches the climax of its back trajectory so that as you come round the rod tip is a little lower and the lead just misses the ground on its compression part of the cast , hope that makes sense , I can see it my head but its hard to explain , hope this is useful and good luck (you have prob sorted it by now anyway lol 0keep up the vids you explain well and make things look good .

I would say try and slow things down and get so it feels right/better for you and then keep pinging it out a bit more, and a bit more. You have to find out what feels right for you. As in pendulum cast or left to right, right to left. I don't pendulum and think I can get better results from left, right ping. Practise practise is the only way mate. Looks good tho, Thats for sure. Hi Dave the wind should be off your back. At all casting comps they set up the court, with the wind behind you as you get better distances. The only fault yoy had with your pendulum cast was you hit it far to quick and you didnt hit it up.Hence it went to low. look up hit it up not so fast though. looks good though mate, really coming on. Oh yes last thing lead drop usually lead by your hand that grips the rod or a few inches lower. Most people are around there. And like Isaid Dave dont forget your rubber grip for the reel. I told you as you got better you would burn it,and it bloody hurts when you dont have rubber protection. You will get there dave everybody has to start at the beginning.
