RIDE IMPRESSION: 2022 YAMAHA WR450F

- It’s fair to say that Kirk Hutton knows a thing of two about Yamaha dirt bikes. Over an illustrious 20-year off-road racing career, the 49-year-old has amassed 15 Queensland state titles, 12 ISDE Gold Medals (from 15 attempts), and seven national enduro title wins (one in the AORC and six at the A4DE). And incredibly, he achieved all that aboard Yamaha machinery.
During that time, however, Hutton has only campaigned Yamaha’s WR450F a couple of times - neither of which were necessarily his choice. Like many elite-level enduro racers in Australia over the past decade or two, Kirk’s chosen the lightweight, race-ready YZ450F for the high-intensity Sprint-format racing that dominates enduro competition in Oz, rather than Australia’s biggest-selling bike, the WR450F.
And that’s exactly why we wanted to get this Yamaha ‘lifer’ to throw a leg over the just-released 2022 WR450F - a machine significantly updated a year ago and billed as the lightest, most nimble, most race-ready enduro bike Yamaha has ever produced.
So, what did “King Kirk” think of the thing? Check out his video feedback after a day-long test on a variety of flowing grasstrack and snotty, rock-strewn trails. Let’s just say he would have been happy to take it home.
I came from a XR400 2003 model , had it for 5 years and sold it , regret so much being a icon..
Have not been on a moto since then , until I brought a WR450f 2022 5 months ago.. OMG!!❤ so in love with it ….
Waiting on mine arriving within a week. And now feel way better about the purchase. Thanks for an honest review.
Great review as always Andy. Good to see The King still at it. Always preferred the WR’s over the YZ’s myself, better torque and more stable feeling I think, but each to their own
I have the 2023 Wr 250f and in Canada these bikes come heavily restricted because of emissions regulations how ever the competition ECU kit is available in aftermarket applications I am going to get the 2024 Wr 450 I love the 250 it’s is surprisingly very light and nimble fast bike in tight terrain. It’s awesome in the bush hopping roots and logs and rocks. I had to raise the RPMs about 200 RPM for the slow technical stuff. It helps a lot 200 RPM isn’t very much.
I've always wanted a dirt bike, my dream bike.
It's hard to quantify any real noticable difference between the wr and yz in 95% of situations once you get some good tunes loaded into the bikes. When I first rode mine ('21 yz450f), it was so squirty down low that I kept thinkn my rear tire had gone down? After adjusting the suspension settings, modifying the air induction and adding a Pro Circuit t6 exhaust with spark arrestor. I went to a 14 tooth front sprocket and 51 tooth rear (chromoly), DID x-ring chain, changed out the IMHO shitty rear tire, for a Tusk T45 and loaded a couple custom tunes into the bike. It's way more tractable and connected to the terrain now and actually enjoyable to ride for more than a half hour.
Looks nice mate! Me has a 2022 yz250x and love ripping trails in the bush!
15 minutes on that thing and I'd need to lie down and have a good sleep I rkn !!
could you please compare this to a ktm 450 excf?
6.41 "Hey Dad, how can you jump on the bike and go hard like that".
Hi!
Are you using the standard engine tuning maps?
Old mate Hutto had some great times and rides with him lol top bloke
Have you had the bike on some scales in race form? How does the weight feel in comparison with a ktm 450/500?
Oh, and is the clutch pull lighter than 2019?
Has the starting improved on the 22 models
Yes
That place looks cool to ride, what’s it called?
WR450F are amazing bikes, but no kickstart on a trail bike is unacceptable to me. I'll stick with the older models
No kick start is a deal breaker, if those tiny batteries go out, which they do often, your stranded😢
Kick it up to third and bump start it.
@@jimmyneutron6127 If your on a hill or between trees in a tight area or 20+ Miles from home In the boonies sometimes there's no room to push start...I'm telling you no Kickstart can turn into a nightmare real quick if your stranded and possibly alone and have to sleep on a rock overnight or a few nights... Get a new battery every year and never a day off a trickle charger is the best thing you can do for starters..
Very nice
Wish these came with a open title or street legal would be a great dual sport
they are in aus
Just seen 2 in ny with legal plates
@@holeshot1721 That would be "Just saw 2 in NY with plates". BTW, it isn't easy to do that in NY. They are lucky.
Three thing that put me off, no 6 speed, big tanks are a pain, 18k, sheesh!
250 review??
The Yamaha 450 seems like a good sell arounder. I see the husqvarna and ktm 500's have 13.5 inches of ground clearance and the Yamaha has 12.6....have you found that to be an issue with the Yamaha?
anyone have maps for really slippery technical riding ?
Any reason they can't make a street-legal version?
America
@@craigd123 , close, I think the answer is called California.
@@captainamerica9353 enjoying my street legal wr450f uncorked with ecu straight from the store down under
@@craigd123 I've got the "05 WR450F uncorked and street legal, total blast 👍
Looking into getting a hare scramble/plated dirt bike... I keep going back and forth between this wr450f and the wr250f... I am new to dirt bikes, but I ride my Super Tenere off road a bit, and I'm a bigger guy around 250 lbs. I just keep thinking the 250 is gonna come up short or be working waaay harder hauling me around, especially on short pavement sections...
250lbs, get the 450.
I’m 250lbs and have just gone through this talk with myself, I settled for the wr450 get mine next week hopefully
262lbs wet. That's over 10lbs heavier than KTM 500 XCF-W.
2,500$ more where I'm at (usd)
Over 2 minutes into the video you haven't gotten to the review on the bike at all you're too busy worrying about the guys credentials and what he's won and what he's done shut up and get to the point
Oh dear maaaate lol....just skip ahead and you'll waste less time writing garbage 😋
I don’t like the all blue plastics
What would you change?
Buy something else then. 😂
I like the 2023 scheme better, so much it's at the top of my current list 😎
@@jasoncee666 What's the difference in the '23 verses '22
@@seatime674 Well I actually forget think it was just the stickers possibly. I ended up not the right bike for me 😪
