People forget that in some places colonialism is what bridged the gap between feudalism and the modern nation state. Europe had to go through years of war, strife and repression to reach the point it was at in the late 18th century. And hell, look at Africa which by and large recived no nation building and is still crossing that bridge. A lot of peoples learnt lot of lessons and absorbed a lot of values you need for a free modern nation state to form just by interacting within the confines of a colonial state.
If only decolonisation had of been slower, and taken with the idea of true nation building instead of "the americans are angry at us and we have no money better drop the colonies" or worse the "if we cant have this nobody can" scorched earth of the French , the world would be a better place now.

@władysław Well, the British are responsible for the spread of technology and infrastructure, such as railway networks, pretty much all across the globe. The British also helped to establish a global network of trade, which aided in the sharing of ideas and goods across the globe. It is correct to state that the methods the British used to accomplish these things weren't great, some of them were terrible (awful one-sided trading agreements, forced trading such as with China and other such occurrences), but I think that objectively there were net positives of the British colonial presence. Also, why wouldn't inventions count as good things the British accomplished, just curious?

ok, I get sure Winston Churchill neglected the starving people in Bangladesh, however, I think people ignore the fact that you know there was a war going on. and in war people dying due to lack of food was going to happen. it failed simply because the Indian economy was not developed enough. we must remember when Winston Churchill grew up India was seen as a part of the empire. and during the war Britain required food from India so it took what it needed, now think how many would have died under nazi and Japanese occupation, heaps more. all the food there would imply be harvested and the Indian would end up like the jews would. Adolf Hitler would have directed all the food from India leading to the entire population's death, also around the time of ww2 Germany faced food shortages. although Winston Churchill was racist if it was not for him we would be in a worse world, and he deserves our admiration and respect for the good things he did. I am an Australian saying this and during ww2 Winston Churchill said barely any troops would help Australia, I am simply looking from a practical point of view, not a politically directed view.

After so many years of mistreatment, the British didn't trust their Indian subjects to not essentially welcome the Japanese as liberators. And so they enacted a scorched earth policy, destroying the food in India's most fertile of areas; modern day Bangladesh. As an Indian, it is embarrassing and pathetic to see the UK the way it is now. The fact that my country was once upon a time a Colony of the British Empire which ruled over a third of the world is still fresh in the minds of many people. Despite their colonial atrocities it is no easy feat to achieve what the British did, and in many ways India is what it is today thanks to them. To see them reduced to this pitiful shell of the Empire that has long regressed their pre WWII might is unsightly to say the least. They used to be respected and feared by us Indians but are now going to themselves be ruled by one. From The Global Power to a slave of the West 😮‍💨

Even people from his time found his views extreme. And just because something isn’t a crime, that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing or it should be admired or respected.

@@ihopeicanchangethisnamelat7108 well at least his racism is not as extreme as the Nazis. Imagine this, if there's no Churchill, today Britain would full with Aryan population and less British. Also black people might not be existed today if the Nazis won. You might wonder why there's less African American in Man in the High Castle.
So we might have to show Churchill a bit of respect for stopping the Nazis. I mean even the Russian respect Stalin

Lol WTF!?!? Bro, learn history. Winston Churchill was an outspoken racist who caused a famine in India leading to the death of over 3 million Bengalis and when asked about it he blamed the Indians, saying it was their fault for "breading like rabbits". Mate half the world's population would gladly shit all over Winston Churchill's statue and you not joining in would basically be a giant middle finger to the millions of people who's ancestors were subjugated to the tyranny of British rule.

Not us Indians man. I know Churchill saved Europe, but the cost was us, the Indians. We were the ones who died in those artificial famines and brutal wars. But yeah, their point was stupid. He saved them and now they are being woke, similar to Gandhi.
